A few years ago i mentioned to this old jazzbo dude at a flea market I was studying piano and he said above all else I should listen to George Shearing and try to imitate him. I have not done either until today (listening to September in the Rain as I write, v. good, search). He was born blind and he was knighted last year but has not rated an ILM thread thus far. ???

I was at a holiday party and heard a great track which turned out to be his "Snowfall Cha-Cha" on one of those lounge comps (this one christmas themed).

I'm psyched that there's some George Shearing love here. I wouldn't have even bothered to start a thread because I'd assume it would just drop off new answers without much activity.

There's a really awesome but sadly short clip of him in Jazz on a Summer's Day. I also remember hearing a story about how he used to throw glass bottles out his apartment window as a child just to hear the sound of them breaking in the alley.
