"kinky afro."

was recorded by the happy mondays in 1990, and released as a single (as well as on their album pills n' thrills n' bellyaches.) despite reference to "lady marmalade," this is (to me) darker (and therefore more immediately gripping) than the majority of the mondays work. (admittedly, i'm not too familiar.) "talk about it." (c. 2001 e. padgett.)

despite containing one of the greatest rock couplets evah, "shaun ryder is Englands greatest poet since Yeats": greatest stupid pop quote of the decade?

I'm told it's Shaun speaking to is as-yet-unborn child, which makes it more human and thus very much darker than usual - there's something in there trying to get out from under the druggy miasma, kind of like old Funkadelic

it is, of course, one of the best singles ever. it is both celebratory and dark, but kind of neither, in a way it works like some of the manix/reinforced 12s in that vibey narcotism which isn't quite celebratory, more woozily out of it

much of the first half of Bummed is darker, with the hannett production being murkier than the pills'n'thrills sheen

Me being me, I actually like this one radical remix of the song more that's halfway to industrial. It's much less...er...friendly.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 29 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Grateful Dead covers Renegade Soundwave!! No no I love it I DO love it.... it's grate. The first two lines of the song - it's like dave q says, tho I've always imagined the child being alive, which veers the lyric past curiousness and into severely oedipal mirror-stage time- travel lewdnessishness..... "son, i'm thirty / i only went with your mother cause she's dirty"

This is one of the tracks that rather conclusively proves that the Happy Mondays were a killer singles band. Generally, I will like any song that uses the word "crucify" in the chorus (why do you think I sing all that church music? HAW HAW).

one year passes...
i only grow more convinced this was the greatest rock single of the 90s every day

i mean, if anyone has anything better, please let me know.

(first person who says "smells like teen spirit" is immediately banned from going to heaven.)

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Friday, 15 August 2003 04:30 (twenty-two years ago)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 15 August 2003 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Friday, 15 August 2003 04:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i just don't know what to think about the 90s anymore

(yes this is a good song but not my fave HM, nor from that album even (Gods Cop))

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 15 August 2003 04:37 (twenty-two years ago)

ditto to that! yay "god's cop"!

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Friday, 15 August 2003 04:38 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, "god's cop" is probably my favorite monday's song ever, but it was never released as a single, so no dice!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 15 August 2003 04:42 (twenty-two years ago)

ahem - "greatest rock song of the 90s"

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Friday, 15 August 2003 04:48 (twenty-two years ago)

what are you on about?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 15 August 2003 04:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Semantic crossfire.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 15 August 2003 04:50 (twenty-two years ago)

is that like a logistical beatdown?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 15 August 2003 04:50 (twenty-two years ago)

that year and a half of the nineties pre-nevermind probably, um, formed me aesthetically

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Friday, 15 August 2003 04:53 (twenty-two years ago)

not sure what that means either

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Friday, 15 August 2003 04:53 (twenty-two years ago)

me too, really. "modern rock radio." school drives featuring the farm and new order and stereo mc's.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 15 August 2003 04:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow everyone beat me to it with the "God's Cop" love.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 15 August 2003 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

They were pissing gold..

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 15 August 2003 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

As much as I adore this song (and I do), I think that The Charlatans' "Then" beats it.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 15 August 2003 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

It's about their Dad, isn't it? And the fact that (this is my favourite Ryder quote ever) Sean "was listening to "Brother Louie" and wanted to write something ironic like that". My favourite Mondays song by miles.
