Best Pink Floyd Solo Debut Album

A little bit of variety here. Let's see if Syd's indie cred will hold out for the win on ILX. I have included both "The Body" (because it may be viewed technically as a collaboration rather than a true 'solo' album) and "Pros and Cons..." for Roger Waters.

Poll Results

OptionVotes
Syd Barrett - The Madcap Laughs (1970) 29
Nick Mason - Fictitious Sports (1981) 4
David Gilmour - David Gilmour (1978) 2
Roger Waters - The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking (1984) 2
Roger Waters & Ron Geesin - Music from "The Body" (1970) 0
Richard Wright - Wet Dream (1978)0

Cool poll.

I've always thought "Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking" was one of the best things Waters ever did, and one of the few Floyd-related albums that I can still go back to and enjoy anymore.

Evidently, Clapton was too strung out at that point to remember much of anything about the sessions.

The Madcap Laughs is going to utterly destroy this poll, that's obvious

Billy Pilgrim, Monday, 31 December 2007 21:33 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, kinda unfair

Davey D, Monday, 31 December 2007 21:34 (seventeen years ago)

Meh.

madcap, but gilmore's record is cool too.

akm, Tuesday, 1 January 2008 17:30 (seventeen years ago)

Has anyone even heard the Wright and Mason ones? (Besides Joe, that is.)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 1 January 2008 17:31 (seventeen years ago)

the nick mason one is actually a carla bley/robert wyatt album that came out under mason's name for some reason. it almost doesn't count. i haven't heard it, it's probably good

akm, Tuesday, 1 January 2008 17:39 (seventeen years ago)

Not that I'd vote for it (or have even heard it), but what about Mason + Fenn "Profiles", if Waters + Geesin counts separately from Waters alone?

Woah-woah, missta?!
I just voted for Mason's. It's played mostly by Carla Bley's then band, features Robert Wyatt on tracks, etc-etc.

I almost voted for Wright's -- low-key mellow instrumentals but if you like Meddle and the keyboard parts / chord changes on Saucerful and Dark Side then you're going to enjoy parts of Wet Dream, it really underlines his contribution to early Floyd. The song "Holiday" is beautiful.

I think Mason might have had more to do with Fictitious Sports than most people usually attribute, it has more in common with his production on Rock Bottom though with Bley writing all the tunes & Wyatt singing everything it's more of a friends-having-fun vibe than a personal solo statement. The last track is a Philip Glass spoof.

Milton Parker, Tuesday, 1 January 2008 20:58 (seventeen years ago)

The Mason album is great, and probably more of a contendor than (all of the) people (who haven't heard it) might think. Wyatt doesn't quite sing everything on it. Opening track "Can't Get My Motor To Start" anticipates Carla Bley's daughter's solo career nicely, w/hapless female vocals and innuendo galore.

dlp9001, Tuesday, 1 January 2008 21:11 (seventeen years ago)

I'm a big fan of the solo Gilmour albums, although I prefer the second to the first. Still, the first is good enough to get my vote. Short And Sweet is probably the stand-out track on there.

JimD, Tuesday, 1 January 2008 21:42 (seventeen years ago)

Syd ought to walk this.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 1 January 2008 21:45 (seventeen years ago)

Wet Dream totally bummed me out -- I went in all expecting Animals-like synthesizers with "Remember A Day"-esque vocals and instead, yeah, got organ and so forth. Maybe I should check it out again, but I wasn't terrible sold.

If we're going to include the Mason & Fenn album, then we really should include the one and only Zee album too. Something for the "when musicians discovered Fairlights" thread.

Did you know Roger Waters plays team pool in bars around Lower Manhattan? Pretty cool...
Madcap, obv.

Also, no one's mentioned "The Body" thus far...from what I recall (though it's been a while since I've heard it), the most experimental of the ones listed.

Joe, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 13:17 (seventeen years ago)

That being said, I didn't really like it

Joe, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 13:18 (seventeen years ago)

I like both Fictitious Sports and Wet Dream; the former would be a serious contender on ILX if more people had heard it. The latter probably not so (very 'classic Floyd' in the mellow sense), but who knows. Wright's solo lyrics are for the most part just as bleak as Waters.

Joe, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 13:24 (seventeen years ago)

"The Body" thing is experimental... it's also laughably bad.

novaheat, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 19:15 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

I'll have to try this/these Fictitious Sports.

I'm currently in Lower Manhattan, as it happens! Might see if I can find Rog for a game of pool.

That record isn't half bad.

Naive Teen Idol, Sunday, 6 January 2008 06:48 (seventeen years ago)

Glad I'm not the only one who voted for "Pros and Cons...", at least.
