isn't this Poison or something...?

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 1 January 2008 23:04 (sixteen years ago) link

The double Beatles sample is pretty much the best, especially since I got into the Beatles long after I owned Paul's Boutique and was excited when I realized they had been sampled.

What would using both of these cost nowadays, assuming you could even do it?

stevie, Tuesday, 1 January 2008 23:16 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, the stoned-out Isley lick in A Year And A Day for me, followed by the The End/Pepper mash.

energy flash gordon, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 10:12 (sixteen years ago) link

A Year And A Day is one of my favourite Beasties tracks, 'That Lady' is pretty fucking killer in its own right.

stevie, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 11:36 (sixteen years ago) link

Bah, they don't even have "if it's gonna be that kind of party, I'm gonna stick my dick in the mashes potatoes" in it either. . .

Anyone read the 33 1/3 book about this?

Dewey B., Thursday, 3 January 2008 20:19 (sixteen years ago) link

Damn, mehlt, what an effort put into typing all this down! (Not to mention all the work the Dust Brothers et al put into it.)

Even breaking this down into "Favourite drum beat" and "Favourite vocal bit" and "Favourite sound effect" etc. would be difficult to choose. That "Outta the car, longhair!" is delightfully surprising. The stacked Beatles beats demonstrate that Ringo was a great drummer. And the bubbling bong was much less of a cliché back in '89. But so far Ernie Isley and his Roland Jet Phaser is taking the lead.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Thursday, 3 January 2008 22:13 (sixteen years ago) link

http://www.boingboing.net/2011/07/08/creative-license-how.html?dlvrit=36761

Kembrew's book is incredible, and they scanned the page which is basically the major illustration of how broken sampling laws have become, the concluding page of the chapter where they walk through how much it would have cost to legally license 'Paul's Boutique'

Estimated sales = 2.5 million
Artist's estimated total losses from releasing record -$19,800,000

it bugs me that there's no source, is all. I can't think of many instances where he went out of his way to praise white musicians - esp ones playing in a black-dominated genre (and who weren't playing with Miles lol) - in public.
