Pre-Mutt Leppard and Pre-Mutt Cars have so little in common, yet there are times they sound like the same band on this pair of records. Which one floats yer boat more?

That last Mutt poll made me evaluate this question at home. In a back-to-back comparison, I found that Heartbeat City has some filler. Not garbage, but some tracks that don't shine.

Pyromania has no slack at all.

Some of the minor tracks on Heartbeat City are actually my favorites, though, whereas my Pyromania favorites are largely the singles. All of which I've heard a zillion times. Not that that lessens their goodness or anything, but it's kind of hard to ever come back to them with a fresh perspective.

Both are excellent productions. But Pyromania is my favorite Def Leppard album, while Cars' debut is clearly their best work. Hence, my boat-floating vote.

NC OTM

Heartbeat City is neither the Cars' finest hour nor all-killer-no-filler. Not Mutt's fault, but he caught them for their last best shot, vs launching Leppard to previously-unimagined heights.

"Heartbeat City" is so great that it would beat anything else he produced. "Pyromania" is not at all a bad album, but "Heartbeat City" remains, well not neccessarily Mutt's finest hour as a producer, but definitely the best music he was ever involved in.

Pyromania, simply because it rocks harder. Heartbeat City remains a fine album, though.
