Rolling Indie Thread 2008
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 2 January 2008 09:50 (seventeen years ago) link
still haven't made it past the first four songs
not in a good way mind you
oh, i see. no individual threads
― Zeno, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 09:56 (seventeen years ago) link
well not necessarily, just that if this shit (like the MGMT) thread doesn't take off there is a rolling thread wherein to discuss such record.
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 2 January 2008 09:57 (seventeen years ago) link
"not in a good way mind you"
i'll be back with a response in a week or two
― Zeno, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 09:58 (seventeen years ago) link
sometimes it's hard to predict in real time if a thread will eventually take off but ok
― Zeno, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 10:01 (seventeen years ago) link
me too probably. i dlded the leak a month or so ago i guess but haven't listened to it again in at least a few weeks.
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 2 January 2008 10:01 (seventeen years ago) link
for future reference i meant.
basically bcuz a lot of the threads abt marginally popular (meaning not spoon, lcd, etc.) indie bands (i.e. the yeasayer, phosphorescent, black kids threads) are usually pretty short and consist of posts made basically by the same ppl.
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 2 January 2008 10:03 (seventeen years ago) link
but this way we have the power to make them the NEW spoon and lcd's! (we don't,just kidding)
― Zeno, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 10:06 (seventeen years ago) link
anyway,i see yr point
I liked them live. Can't stand any of the recordings I've heard though.
Is this new one any better/different?
― Nate Carson, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 14:50 (seventeen years ago) link
i think it's only the 2nd record (?!)
― Zeno, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 14:54 (seventeen years ago) link
Right. I heard an album and a 12" single... not the new one.
― Nate Carson, Thursday, 3 January 2008 07:42 (seventeen years ago) link
I'm really liking this so far. "Wucan" is totally progged out with all those keyboards, and "Evil Ways" is the best garage rock track I've heard in this young year. The big Hawkwind epic is pretty fun too.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 18:39 (sixteen years ago) link
Actually "Bright Lights" is starting to remind me more of a late 80s Grateful Dead "Space > Drums" jam. I think I mean that in a good way.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 18:41 (sixteen years ago) link
This record rules

i've heard good things from some friends, i wanna get this.

― M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 19:17 (sixteen years ago) link
vocals on 'evil ways' remind me of mudhoney. a lot.
some classic keyboard sounds on this album. 'tyrants' has this little part that sounds like 'stairway to heaven' which is then followed by some pink floyd sounding keys and then breaks into some very sabbath guitar lines.
having grown up on classic rock, this all sounds pretty familiar and comfortable to me. which isn't a bad thing. fave tracks - 'stay free', 'stormy high', and 'tyrants'. i'll be buying this
― 6335, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 19:45 (sixteen years ago) link

I've listened to this a lot, I think it fucking rules.
"Bright Light" is a chiming chunky chewbag.
― W4LTER, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 22:24 (sixteen years ago) link
Bought the "deluxe" edition from Secretly Canadian in advance (which gave me the album as MP3s to tide me over until the officially official release date). Have yet to listen, but everything I read instigated my knee-jerk purchase.
― dblcheeksneek, Thursday, 17 January 2008 21:01 (sixteen years ago) link
It's fucking fantastic, but I love me the classic rock. Better than their first—bigger, spacier.
― I eat cannibals, Thursday, 17 January 2008 21:15 (sixteen years ago) link
Sags a bit in the middle if you ask me but the opening and the closing tracks fucking rule.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 17 January 2008 21:26 (sixteen years ago) link
Cool, all things to which I'll pay better attention.
Thnx,

My love for this album is wild and irrational
― Davey D, Thursday, 24 January 2008 20:53 (sixteen years ago) link
Listening to it for the first time right now. Me like (although, yeah, I think I still prefer them live), but then I'm going through a comparatively Heavy phase...
― mike t-diva, Thursday, 24 January 2008 21:15 (sixteen years ago) link
Does it have anything as good as Carry On My Wayward Son?
― contenderizer, Thursday, 24 January 2008 23:25 (sixteen years ago) link
Wucan YES! Wuz listening to Wucan at work last night really really loud in a really really crazy room and it was CRAZY. I also really like the really short "Wild Wind" or whatever song. It kinda reminds me of some my fave Bowie stuff (lief on mars)
― Dr. Superman, Thursday, 24 January 2008 23:37 (sixteen years ago) link
um where do you work
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 24 January 2008 23:37 (sixteen years ago) link
If it can actually go toe to toe w/ COMYS and Life On Mars, I'll give it a shot. First LP was merely good.
― contenderizer, Thursday, 24 January 2008 23:40 (sixteen years ago) link
i work in a secret wild place where nobody minds if you play Black Mountain at 2 a.m. even though the place is full.
― Dr. Superman, Thursday, 24 January 2008 23:42 (sixteen years ago) link
how good is the bonus disc?
1. Bastards of Light 2. Thirteen Walls 3. Black Cat
― Bee OK, Friday, 8 February 2008 08:44 (sixteen years ago) link
They really needed to ditch the fake heavy thing and go for the 'No Hits' thing instead. Plodding basslines does not heavy make. And: Why build up all that intensity in 'Tyrants' and then cut the legs out?
― fukasaku tollbooth, Friday, 8 February 2008 12:05 (sixteen years ago) link
The bonus disc is pretty decent, but I've only heard it once so far. I'm still enthralled with the album itself, one of the early standouts of the year.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Friday, 8 February 2008 14:02 (sixteen years ago) link
I've only heard this in passing, but one of the songs sound WAY too much like a CAN song.
― Hurting 2, Friday, 8 February 2008 14:51 (sixteen years ago) link
Hmmm, I hadn't really noticed much Can. I was too busy noticing all the Hawkwind and Grateful Dead moments.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Friday, 8 February 2008 14:52 (sixteen years ago) link
apparently it's called Drugunaut: http://youtube.com/watch?v=VElg2CNpJSY
― Hurting 2, Friday, 8 February 2008 14:53 (sixteen years ago) link
"druganaut" is a great great jam from the first album but sounds nothing like can. this new one's still growing on me. no "faulty times" or "no satisfaction" or "don't run our hearts around" obvious high points. but i can't wait to see them live to set that straight
― kamerad, Saturday, 9 February 2008 08:07 (sixteen years ago) link
this album was OK in some parts.
― Curt1s Stephens, Saturday, 9 February 2008 08:47 (sixteen years ago) link
yeah, sorry Hurting "druganaut" is from their 1st album. and yeah, I don't really hear Can (anyway, nowhere near as much as that track from the Kurihara/Boris album) .. it always immediately struck me as Blue Cheer. I'm thinking "Sun Cycle" from 'Outsideinside'
Just finished listening to this for the first time. bought the 2lp after work... it's good, but I didn't really flip out or anything. the first one I kinda *did* flip out for! a little bit. This new one is good, no question, and I TOTALLY dig the Keyboard emph. But after first listen I don't want to totally run back to a song like I wanted with "druganuat" or "don't run our hearts around". But there is definite niceness here, I get a big Head East vibe
― Stormy Davis, Saturday, 9 February 2008 08:55 (sixteen years ago) link
sucky thing, tho ... why does the 2lp have ONE song on the 4th side, yet they put a "bonus disc" on the CD ? they could have easily thrown those tracks on the 4th side. Totally bogus.
― Stormy Davis, Saturday, 9 February 2008 08:56 (sixteen years ago) link
Sucky thing two: why were they selling Bastards of Light/Thirteen Walls as an exclusive, never to be available anywhere else 12" on their tour last year, for 10 princely English pounds, no less?
― mike t-diva, Saturday, 9 February 2008 14:54 (sixteen years ago) link
They really needed to ditch the fake heavy thing and go for the 'No Hits' thing instead.
I like this album alright but I agree w/ this, "No Hits" is their best track by a wide margin
the new one, for me it's all about side 2 of the LP (Wucan / Stay Free / Queens Will Play)
― dmr, Saturday, 9 February 2008 16:21 (sixteen years ago) link
wait hurting is right, druganaut sounds an awful lot like halleluhwah.
― aaron d.g., Saturday, 9 February 2008 19:01 (sixteen years ago) link
Would I like this?
― Scik Mouthy, Friday, 16 May 2008 15:00 (sixteen years ago) link
You might do. Demonstrates a range of flexion, imagination and power absent from most prematurely arthritic British rock of this age.
― Dingbod Kesterson, Friday, 16 May 2008 15:02 (sixteen years ago) link
i just bought this and it is excellent.

I've quite enjoyed it; good sound to the drums and guitars. Not sure about the vocals / lyrics all the time, but that's always a problem with 'RAWK innit. Plenty of terrific riffs and ideas.
― Scik Mouthy, Thursday, 22 May 2008 07:08 (sixteen years ago) link
good album and i'm glad i got that bonus CD.

Seriously this is what I had hoped My Morning Jacket would sound like. When they turned out to be lame I was totes sad, but this is kicking my ass.
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 22:29 (sixteen years ago) link
this album owns the zone!
― M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 22:56 (sixteen years ago) link
this was number 1 for me at the midway point of this year but Third has since taken that spot.
love that My Morning Jacket album as well but really hasn't taken off on ILM or most of the known review sites.
― Bee OK, Thursday, 7 August 2008 00:34 (sixteen years ago) link
^^^^^ This. The bad reviews are all because of that stupid Highly Suspicious song (and -- to a lesser extent -- because the disc, admittedly, doesn't do enough with the lead singer's great voice).
― Daniel, Esq., Thursday, 7 August 2008 00:40 (sixteen years ago) link
I loved the first Black Mountain album, but this one leaves me cold. Except Stormy High which rocks in the highest degree.

this is pretty much my go-to joint of the year...whenever i can't decide what to listen to i put this on and i love it every time.

I think I like this album a lot...I've only ever listened to it at work, where it's hard to tell for sure. Lots of awesome keyboardy shit though.
― venom boners are totally canon (nickalicious), Monday, 24 November 2008 21:34 (sixteen years ago) link
My boss claims this band shares members with Pink Mountaintops? I like them too but aren't sure I believe him.
― venom boners are totally canon (nickalicious), Monday, 24 November 2008 21:35 (sixteen years ago) link
Yeah, Steve McBean is the main songwriter in both of them. They both get on a Neil Young tip quite often so it doesn't seem like a big puzzle to me.
Swore I posted on this thread, might have been on a non-specific one - this album grew on me like a bastard and in 'Stormy High' has basically my favourite riff of the year. Really like the way these dudes go about their business as music makers, basically
