Oh By The Way - the Pink Floyd Boxset Poll

Awesome fact: Nick Mason wanted to call it "Have you got it yet" which would have been brilliant for more than one reason:
1) An unrecorded Syd 'track' name
2) Here they are, all remastered and available yet again
3) would have MADE ROGER REALLY MAAADDD!!!!

i don't understand

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Thursday, 3 January 2008 13:00 (seventeen years ago)

they have put all their rubbishy music in one box?

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Thursday, 3 January 2008 13:00 (seventeen years ago)

yep.

Mark G, Thursday, 3 January 2008 13:02 (seventeen years ago)

so it's really 'best pink floyd elpee'?

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Thursday, 3 January 2008 13:02 (seventeen years ago)

Aha, knock yersel' out, you people.

I'm voting Piper, for no other reason than I quite warmed to it after getting the deluxe 3CD edition. The rest can go bottom itself, unless I win one as a prize or something, in which case I'll give them all a fair hearing before selling it on ebay or somesuch.

Mark G, Thursday, 3 January 2008 13:04 (seventeen years ago)

"Wish You Were Here".

But are these actually remastered? I haven't read anything about it, but it would be needed, as other than DSOTM and "Piper" nether has been given the treatment since 1994. And that's a mighty long time.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 3 January 2008 13:14 (seventeen years ago)

Not remastered, no. Pitchfork gave this set a hammering for that reason.

This is piper vs dark side for me. I went dark side, although See Emily Play is prob. their best song.

The Wayward Johnny B, Thursday, 3 January 2008 13:24 (seventeen years ago)

So it's 14 albums for £120 or so, OK some are doubles.

The Radiohead 6 cd box is £30 or thereabouts.

Good old Radiohead, right?

Mark G, Thursday, 3 January 2008 13:26 (seventeen years ago)

(See Emily Play isn't on Piper, btw.)

Mark G, Thursday, 3 January 2008 13:27 (seventeen years ago)

"See Emily Play" is on the recent 3CD version though.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 3 January 2008 13:31 (seventeen years ago)

If See Emily Play WAS on Piper I would have gone for it, I mean.

The Wayward Johnny B, Thursday, 3 January 2008 13:36 (seventeen years ago)

who are you, their accountant?

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Thursday, 3 January 2008 13:37 (seventeen years ago)

Their accountant was probably the one who decided to re-release all the albums without remastering them.

24 bit remaster technology arrived sometime around 98-99, which means remastering can be defended if there have been no remasters since then.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 3 January 2008 13:50 (seventeen years ago)

albums are very much like cheese. if you don't remaster them every 3 years with the lastest flim-flam technology they go off.

Frogman Henry, Thursday, 3 January 2008 13:52 (seventeen years ago)

I have the Shine On boxset and it works for me.

Joe, Thursday, 3 January 2008 19:24 (seventeen years ago)

Meddle vs. Piper: Hmmm.. Meddle.

Pillbox, Thursday, 3 January 2008 19:34 (seventeen years ago)

Pink Floyd albums in approximate order of how often I seem to dig them out and listen to them (most frequent first).

Meddle
Wish You Were Here
Piper at the Gates of Dawn
Relics
Saucerful of Secrets
Obscured By Clouds
Animals
Dark Side of the Moon
Final Cut
The Wall
Momentary Lapse of Reason
Ummagumma
Atom Heart Mother

I've never heard More (I'm kind of saving it) or The Division Bell (I can't face it).

JimD, Friday, 4 January 2008 03:36 (seventeen years ago)

More has some of my fave Floyd tracks on it.

dan selzer, Friday, 4 January 2008 04:25 (seventeen years ago)

You've gotta love the sheer balls of naming a useless, fan-gouging "deluxe" box set after that particular song...

Telephone thing, Friday, 4 January 2008 08:51 (seventeen years ago)

which song?

Mark G, Friday, 4 January 2008 08:58 (seventeen years ago)

this is a nice looking and completely useless box set

akm, Friday, 4 January 2008 15:09 (seventeen years ago)

Well, if you had none of them, and it was in the sale...

I have one of them. That's good enough for me.

Mark G, Friday, 4 January 2008 15:11 (seventeen years ago)

Meddle.

SeekAltRoute, Friday, 4 January 2008 20:25 (seventeen years ago)

which song?

"Have a Cigar" off of Wish You Were Here, the ever-so-subtle jab about the Evil Greedy Music Business that doesn't respect true art, maaannn. The line is "The band is just fantastic, that is really what I think / Oh by the way, which one's Pink?"

Telephone thing, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:07 (seventeen years ago)

I have the Shine On boxset and it works for me.

What's the difference between that and this new box? Other than the packaging, I mean.

Sara Sara Sara, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:18 (seventeen years ago)

meddle

Alex in NYC, Saturday, 5 January 2008 14:03 (seventeen years ago)

i.e. who doesn't already have what they need here?

Alex in NYC, Saturday, 5 January 2008 14:15 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

three years pass...

unless I win one as a prize or something

unless I win one as a prize or something

unless I win one as a prize or something

Unless I win one as a prize or something. This (sort of) happened.

Basically, ebay is fill of cheapie ads for this specific box set. Of course, it's been remastered now as "Discovery" (OMG Geir was right!), but it's mainly that there's been loads of fakey boxes coming in from the east. Anyways, I got one for ridiculously cheap and find it's a genuine copy albeit a bit played alot in places...

So, here I am working through the albums in order! Dreading getting to "The Wall", and "Wish you were here" is dread-disc number two.

And the bombshell drops: Some of these are alright!

I'm up to "Obscured by Clouds" and have enjoyed most of these (apart from Meddle, snore!)

Piper: Totally familiar with it, still fine.
Saucer: Not so fam, Syd is all over this in spirit if not in person.
More: This is good as well!
Ummagumma live: does/tin. Clearly added to make up for people that'd otherwise be disappointed by..
UmmagummaStudio: 4 musicians attempt to fill up tape! It's OK but I can see why everyone hates it.
Atom heart Mother: OK, "If" is very Spiritualized, "Fat old Sun" is very "title by Brian Wilson, song/sung by McCartney" "Alan" is amusing, and I've forgotten the title track already but it seemed to slip by pleasantly, so OK.
Meddle: This is the beginning of the Pink Floyd that people know and love (sigh), "Fearless" is alright but it seems the band got bored and went off to the football. "Echoes" is a four minute OK track extended past the point of meaning, and it says summat when the most distinctive track is a pisstake blues number with a howling dawg.
Obscured by Clouds: Made quicky for a film soundtrack during time away from "Dark Side" sessions, it has an immediacy and I like it a lot. And "Free Four" sounds so much like Half Man Half Biscuit's "God gave us life" (one two free four John the Baptist knows the score) it's not fully!

uh-oh, the next bunch to come are really *heavy* noooh....

Mark G, Friday, 6 January 2012 10:24 (thirteen years ago)

Oh, was going to say: "Grantchester Meadows"- Apparently, Syd's "Opel" didn't get included on his solo LP as people had 'forgotten' about it. This song seems to suggest Roger hadn't, entirely....
