I remember it featured the 808 distinctly and prominently but was not a dance song, and had light and airy Enya-esque vocals. The voice was, range-wise, not very high (think "She Cries Your Name" by Beth Orton). And it was sort of minimal; I just remember the 808 and the vocals. Also, it sounded like a real 808 and like something that used it because it was then-new-and-useful and before the 808 was retro-cool.
This, I am terribly afraid, is all I can remember, but it's absolutely stuck in my head (despite not really remembering any lyrics) and I'm desperate to find what it is. Please, please help.

"Heart and Soul"? The intro/verse sounds quite similar, but this isn't 808y at all, and the chorus is more intense than this song ever reached.

You have any rough idea when the song came out? You mentioned it was before 808 was retro-cool...

From the vibe of the song, I'm guessing some time before 1995, but could be wrong (but would be surprised if I was). I randomly heard it in a thrift store, and after it ended asked them if they could tell me what it was, but they said it was in a 300-cd changer and they had no way of knowing. But yes, it wasn't "Let's use this 808 because it's so retro and sounds really nifty!", but rather "Let's use this 808 because it's new and fashionable" (a la the intro of Whitney Houston's "I Wanna Dance With Somebody"). Maybe it wasn't even an 808 precisely but it totally sounded like that. It used the handclap, I think for the beat.
