I was dismayed at the indifferent critical opinion this got upon release, as if the opinion that the Muses were yesterday's news was kind of prefigured. There's not a weak track.

YESS BEST POLL

Surmounter, Friday, 4 January 2008 01:38 (seventeen years ago) link

used to be in LOVE with cowbirds though.

Surmounter, Friday, 4 January 2008 01:38 (seventeen years ago) link

my #1 is Mr Bones, then White Bikini Sound.

When she comes back with that second refrain in Mr Bones, "Wake up now, why don't you wake up now, look my heart's almost breaking"... FIERCE

wanko ergo sum, Friday, 4 January 2008 01:42 (seventeen years ago) link

of course, later in years, i've grown very found of White Bikini Sand. not s much at first.

ohhh she played that when i saw her last summer too. mm good.

Surmounter, Friday, 4 January 2008 01:42 (seventeen years ago) link

wanko ergo sum, Friday, 4 January 2008 01:42 (seventeen years ago) link

Surmounter, Friday, 4 January 2008 01:42 (seventeen years ago) link

the one artist I regret the most not having seen live (yet)

wanko ergo sum, Friday, 4 January 2008 01:43 (seventeen years ago) link

i know, thank god i found out about that show. i have to tell you, i don't know much about shows but this woman can PERFORM.

next is kim deal. gotta get to it.

Surmounter, Friday, 4 January 2008 01:43 (seventeen years ago) link

I saw an Amps show, that will suffice for Kim Dealage for me.

wanko ergo sum, Friday, 4 January 2008 01:44 (seventeen years ago) link

it was great though.

wanko ergo sum, Friday, 4 January 2008 01:45 (seventeen years ago) link

OK also: SHARK

Surmounter, Friday, 4 January 2008 01:45 (seventeen years ago) link

fuck you saw the amps i really hate you ; (

Surmounter, Friday, 4 January 2008 01:45 (seventeen years ago) link

Wish I still had the t-shirt. I love t-shirts that announce me as OLD CORNY FUKK

wanko ergo sum, Friday, 4 January 2008 01:46 (seventeen years ago) link

"you could be very easy..."

i mean

wow

Surmounter, Friday, 4 January 2008 01:46 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah. there are moments of seemingly contrived lol-90s angst on the album... but they're few.

wanko ergo sum, Friday, 4 January 2008 01:48 (seventeen years ago) link

and btw FIERCE is a good description of this woman in general. i mean that look she gets in her eyes when she's playing, that's fierce.

Surmounter, Friday, 4 January 2008 01:48 (seventeen years ago) link

did you see her as Muses of 50 ft Wave or what?

wanko ergo sum, Friday, 4 January 2008 01:49 (seventeen years ago) link

"or"

wanko ergo sum, Friday, 4 January 2008 01:50 (seventeen years ago) link

solo backed by a full band. did a lot off her new album (which like stole my summer), but also did some muses stuff. lots of classical strings which i thought was a really cool touch.

Surmounter, Friday, 4 January 2008 01:50 (seventeen years ago) link

oh my god and i talked to her it was so weird i had no idea what to say, but it couldn't have happened any other way, i don't think. she signed my cd and stuff. wow i'm a dork.

Surmounter, Friday, 4 January 2008 01:51 (seventeen years ago) link

i missed the ny muses show last august b/c of a wedding ; |

Surmounter, Friday, 4 January 2008 01:52 (seventeen years ago) link

that is how i'd like to see her but no idea how she's planning her future tours. xxp

wanko ergo sum, Friday, 4 January 2008 01:52 (seventeen years ago) link

hahah - I listened to University a few days ago.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 4 January 2008 01:53 (seventeen years ago) link

right... although it'd be super great to see 50ft wave as well. that's prolly a ridiculous show

Surmounter, Friday, 4 January 2008 01:53 (seventeen years ago) link

University is good, and it may just be sentimentalism, but it's got nothing on this one.

wanko ergo sum, Friday, 4 January 2008 01:55 (seventeen years ago) link

i kind of agree.

i love university for its textures. but if memory serves me correclty (haven't given it a proper listen in a bit), it's nowhere near as hook-y or rocky as this. which i guess makes it kind of a mood record? limbo just kind of gets you riled up no matter what, and the songwriting is so great

Surmounter, Friday, 4 January 2008 02:07 (seventeen years ago) link

i don't think we've had a best muses record poll yet!?

Surmounter, Friday, 4 January 2008 02:08 (seventeen years ago) link

There has been plenty of discussion if you search. But not tons of love for Limbo.

wanko ergo sum, Friday, 4 January 2008 02:14 (seventeen years ago) link

it's true, plenty of discussion. i KNOW!

maybe because the instrumentation on it is kind of homogenic? i just don't really care though, like really

Surmounter, Friday, 4 January 2008 02:21 (seventeen years ago) link

I like University but for the production, which turns some of Hersh's best guitar lines into sludge.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 4 January 2008 02:22 (seventeen years ago) link

it's a little tinny, no? gosh i can't remember enuf, i have to put that on tomorrow!

Surmounter, Friday, 4 January 2008 02:28 (seventeen years ago) link

"Slither," "Start," "That's All You Wanted," and (wow) "Snakeface" are marvelous.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 4 January 2008 02:43 (seventeen years ago) link

snakeface was like a drug

Surmounter, Friday, 4 January 2008 02:43 (seventeen years ago) link

I have to go back and listen but this is my favorite Throwing Muses record. Totally fucking solid.

She's another one who recently moved to Portland.

Nate Carson, Friday, 4 January 2008 09:50 (seventeen years ago) link

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Saturday, 5 January 2008 00:01 (seventeen years ago) link

i'm so happy this poll is short and sweet. come on vote ppl!!

freeloader is a great angry song, like if ur pissed

Surmounter, Saturday, 5 January 2008 00:38 (seventeen years ago) link

Tarkissers is awesome! "Kissing you's like kissing gravel/it feels like getting drunk" etc etc I love it.

Trayce, Saturday, 5 January 2008 01:26 (seventeen years ago) link

Voting for 'Serene' because the cello part brought me to tears the first time I heard it - and years later it still does.

This my fave Muses record, post-Tanya, by a long stretch. There is just not a dud track on it - I mean, 'Ruthie's Knocking'? Most other bands would kill for a track half as good as that.

SeekAltRoute, Saturday, 5 January 2008 03:56 (seventeen years ago) link

I guess someone can defend Red Heaven here or on the other Muses thread. "Firepile" was the first song of theirs I heard -- back in 1992. She sounds a bit like Christine Amphlett.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Saturday, 5 January 2008 04:11 (seventeen years ago) link

Shark

Hersh/Narcizo/Georges: MOST FAVORITE ROCK TRIO (and Muses lineup).

Really need to pull out this album again -- though a couple tracks always got skipped for being a little too (???) cute (???).

Afraid to play University out of fear that it won't have quite the same effect.

The Amps were pretty sloppy when I saw them. (Maybe that helps.)

Andy K, Saturday, 5 January 2008 04:23 (seventeen years ago) link

i love limbo, just finally found a used copy late last year (we had it at my college radio but i never copied it). "tar kissers" gets my vote too

daria-g, Saturday, 5 January 2008 07:24 (seventeen years ago) link

nice, i'm glad about the tar kissers love. Shark though, is really so hook-y, it gets me pumped.

yes, trayce, that's my favorite part, of course... "kissing you's like sinking down into the mud

you look better

upside dooooooown

you look better lying down."

Surmounter, Saturday, 5 January 2008 14:11 (seventeen years ago) link

I think this album's a masterpiece: great song-writing and good use of Martin McCarrick.

Bob Six, Saturday, 5 January 2008 14:22 (seventeen years ago) link

no way!! the same mcarrick that toured with her last year?

Surmounter, Saturday, 5 January 2008 14:44 (seventeen years ago) link

He also added his magic to Siouxsie & the Banshees for a while.

Bob Six, Saturday, 5 January 2008 14:47 (seventeen years ago) link

iiiinteresting. he's CUTE (and talented :-) )

Surmounter, Saturday, 5 January 2008 14:50 (seventeen years ago) link

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Sunday, 6 January 2008 00:01 (seventeen years ago) link
