Xhuxk: "['Two Princes'] was funkier than any other rock song to make it onto the radio in its decade."

Pretty plausible theory at first glance.

How many other funky rock songs were on the radio in the 1990s? Were any funkier than "Two Princes?"

I think "Sexx Laws" is way funkier, but does that count as a rock song?

Is "Give It Away" funkier than "Two Princes"?

i don't think 'sexx laws' is a rock song or funky.

This is kind of like when my college gf said Cracker's "Low" was one of the few "sexy" alt-rock songs of its time. As if that's any reason to listen to it now.

da croupier, Friday, 4 January 2008 17:25 (seventeen years ago)

Thanks for the heads up, Tracer.

I think "Sexx Laws" is funky because it sounds like Earth, Wind & Fire. I think "Jerry" is funky because it's heavy on the "one" and the bass/guitar/drum interplay is percussive in a funky way.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 4 January 2008 17:33 (seventeen years ago)

Both dudes love to play as many notes on that snare as possible. Aaron (Spin Doctors guy) has a lot more finesse tho.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 4 January 2008 17:34 (seventeen years ago)

"Sexx Laws" always sounded more "full of funk signifiers" than "funky" to me. We should be looking for heavy guitar rock where the rhythm section just HAD TO FUNK IT UP, like "Evenflow" and all Abbruzzese-era Pearl Jam.

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 4 January 2008 17:35 (seventeen years ago)

pretty much anything that came up in the "modified funk" lols of the SFJ miscenegation thread last year.

i guess two princes is funky, but it's a fucking abortion of a song. bouncing around the room by phish is kinda funky too. plenty of stuff is funky and still sucks.

also the chili peppers had plenty of "funky" rock hits.

dad a, Friday, 4 January 2008 17:49 (seventeen years ago)

"Sexy MF" is certainly funkier than "Two Princes", though I guess it's not rock.

Tuomas, Friday, 4 January 2008 17:50 (seventeen years ago)

"Sexy MF" is about as funky as Geir leading the Spin Doctors.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 4 January 2008 17:52 (seventeen years ago)

Nick Hexum is the guitarist for 311, I think the drummer is named Chad Sexton III.

the drummer's wee stature is used to hilarious effect in the video where they play b-ball with Shaq.

the funkiest song of the 90s is surely by someone who participated in the funkiest music-making of the 60s and/or 70s. so basically this thread is about the funkiest song of the 90s that was, like, by other kids and stuff.

gabbneb, Friday, 4 January 2008 17:56 (seventeen years ago)

i don't know why people hate on "sexy mf" not being funky or whatever.

Jordan, Friday, 4 January 2008 17:56 (seventeen years ago)

I guess if it gets you laid it's funky.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 4 January 2008 17:57 (seventeen years ago)

the Shaq-featuring video was the aptly titled "You Wouldn't Believe," from 311's 2001 opus From Chaos. According to wikipedia, The album went gold, hit #10 and the single was a top ten modern rock hit.

even flow is "funky" in an extremely 90s way.

I had Pocket Full Of Kryptonite back in middle school, and thought the album track "Refrigerator Car" was a dead ringer for Even Flow-style PJ.

da croupier, Saturday, 5 January 2008 03:38 (seventeen years ago)

one of my favorite funniest things about Pearl Jam is that largely unacknowledged period just before superstardom where they toured with RHCP and made goofy songs like "Dirty Frank" and occasionally brought the funk in their own humble way.

Alex in Baltimore, Saturday, 5 January 2008 03:41 (seventeen years ago)

their own humble pie way

da croupier, Saturday, 5 January 2008 03:44 (seventeen years ago)

that one luscious jackson song was funky.

someone -- i'm nominating mr. croupier, should make a sweet 2CD post-vitology pearl jam mix so i can hear some dope Binaural album traxxx! thanks in advance.

M@tt He1ges0n, Sunday, 6 January 2008 01:14 (seventeen years ago)

also it occurs to me, as i've been for some reason pondering the spin doctors (shoot me pls), but their "sound", their thing as it were, was being a jam band without the jams. which also made me think there are probably a bunch of phish songs that are funkier.

M@tt He1ges0n, Sunday, 6 January 2008 01:16 (seventeen years ago)

But why would jam bands with jams be funkier than jam bands without jams? I don't get that. (And judging from their best-of album last year, Lucious Jackson -- including "Naked Eye," their hit -- were nowhere near as funky as they were made out to be.)

Still, now I'm realzing that I'm kind of surprised nobody mentioned "Sabotage" by the Beastie Boys.

Anyway:
