I think "Sexx Laws" is funky because it sounds like Earth, Wind & Fire. I think "Jerry" is funky because it's heavy on the "one" and the bass/guitar/drum interplay is percussive in a funky way.

Both dudes love to play as many notes on that snare as possible. Aaron (Spin Doctors guy) has a lot more finesse tho.

"Sexx Laws" always sounded more "full of funk signifiers" than "funky" to me. We should be looking for heavy guitar rock where the rhythm section just HAD TO FUNK IT UP, like "Evenflow" and all Abbruzzese-era Pearl Jam.

I had Pocket Full Of Kryptonite back in middle school, and thought the album track "Refrigerator Car" was a dead ringer for Even Flow-style PJ.

one of my favorite funniest things about Pearl Jam is that largely unacknowledged period just before superstardom where they toured with RHCP and made goofy songs like "Dirty Frank" and occasionally brought the funk in their own humble way.

also it occurs to me, as i've been for some reason pondering the spin doctors (shoot me pls), but their "sound", their thing as it were, was being a jam band without the jams. which also made me think there are probably a bunch of phish songs that are funkier.

But why would jam bands with jams be funkier than jam bands without jams? I don't get that. (And judging from their best-of album last year, Lucious Jackson -- including "Naked Eye," their hit -- were nowhere near as funky as they were made out to be.)

Listening to this after 20+ years it was surprising how little groove it had.

was thinking "mysterious ways" could be a contender for its "funky drummer"-esque breaks but the madchester bassline kind of puts it in a different category
