Watch me now with a wicked and wild and I said
We come with the funky style that gets us known for the show
And we'll mix the hip hop reggae if we say it is so
Fuck the naysayers cause they don't mean a thing

scrolling through that is like when the magician pulls the endless string of hankies out of someone's nose, only instead of hankies, its suck

Didn't even look at the choices. Knew going in I would vote for "Offbeat Bare Ass"

I thought for sure I was going to go with something patently awful, like "Nutsymptom," but suddenly I'm kinda taken with a more subtle mystery: "The Continuous Life"? As opposed to ... discrete, non-contiguous life segments?

nabisco, Friday, 4 January 2008 18:35 (seventeen years ago) link

Wait, never mind, the award goes to "Livin' and Rockin'"

nabisco, Friday, 4 January 2008 18:35 (seventeen years ago) link

"Thriving To The Scene" for the sheer headache-inducing grammar, and because looking up the lyrics the chorus itself is just the title repeated 3 times, and is given no real explanation or context by the verses.

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 4 January 2008 18:36 (seventeen years ago) link

clearly the subject line should've been "MOST 311 Song Title"

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 4 January 2008 18:38 (seventeen years ago) link

i can't think of any lols to try out except just posting titles again.

gff, Friday, 4 January 2008 18:44 (seventeen years ago) link

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you..."Brodels."

Ooh you know we pepper you
With a sonic assault side step a you I cannotthink of a better way
That we could celebrate freedom
Than make up a set ofgoals and cold beat 'em
See dumb verbal tags like audio spaghetti
Give a shoutto the one they call
Yeti I bet he put the cabash on any foes whatsoever
Likeoriginal brodel Trevor
Positive vibe merchant grandson of Lord Buckley
Scottish Ralston shows up if you're lucky
Ad Raspler the sweed a friend in deed
He'skeeping an eye on the other guy's greed
These are 311 characters I dubbedeveryone
The story ain't over but my rhyme is done
It was the year that I firsttouched ground
So I grabbed the microphone and I got down
Just like James Browngather round of our sight and sound
Pound for pound we throw down ratherprofound
I'll put you in another world I can't hear you
Like having phone sexwith a deaf girl
No doubt we got the jams that'll smack ya I penned three booksof lyrics
2 for action 1 for backup
'Cuz I'm a cold rockin' brother gottransistor tunes
And it feels real good to get close to you
The brodels is thenazz and the nazz knows where it's at
The brodels is the nazz who knows a catwho can feed a cat
The goal is to be a poet and a carpenter
To be one who lovesto be one who works
The nazz not something that can be given
The brodel isinside you it comes from within
When I feel into the sea
When the world came andkissed me
Transformed my shit told the shark I was a dolphin
Swam quick funnythough
Pirranahs chilled and laughed at
The way that I took off my polka dots ontop of that
The whales know I'm quick watch out
And I get funky fresh as for thefishes
I'm lit luminous I'm not nouveau techno I glow like a glacial
In skinthat swims faster than speed I am I be dropped out of nothing
I will return tonothing
Rotate my style my rhyme my way magician of a rhythm
Lover of animalsdamn I wanna hear 'em
Aquatic my way I got soul shape
Well I'm 6 foot 3 andlike Mohammed Ali I float like a butterfly
but sting like poison ivy
Drive a 69lincoln suicide doors
Around the town I'm slinking fat subs of course
We're thegreatest show on earth
You know we turn it out daily
In and out of town like Barnum and Bailey I know that is a simile
but I couldn't resist
From Solomon Roadie for the PJ's I don't think he'll be pissed I eat a cobb salad,
smokedfish, duck, or clam chowder
Chill with indica and
Guinness Steer clear of whitepowder I run into my brother give him a pound
and a yodel
They know my word isbond talkin' bout the brodels
The brodels is the nazz and the nazz knows whereit's at
The brodels is the nazz who knows a cat who can feed a cat
The goal isto be a poet and a carpenter
To be one who loves to be one who works
The nazznot something that can be given
The brodel is inside you it comes from within
And we're fresh dude just check my man P
He said I will not muddle my mind withimpertinency
Lost a lot in Vegas plays a lot of Sega
Saw a phrase that he likesand put it on his leg
And we're fresh dude just check my man D he said
Comin'in ruff and tuff all systems are tweakin'
People all over the world they must bethinkin'
All the shit that we kickin' our shoes must be stinkin'

amazing poll!

"omaha stylee" is too great not to get my vote.

what was that song with the "throw me a joint onstage what up"

the only time i saw 311 was at the Gameworks huge video arcade in las vegas for the unveiling of sonic the hedgehog for dreamcast.

is "omaha stylee" the one with "got more funky styles than my laser-jet got font"?

i'll go for "sometimes jacks rule the realm"

winston, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 00:10 (seventeen years ago) link

I was going to go with "Guns (Are For Pussies)" because it sort of seems to presume that you'll only read the "Guns" part and go "Whoa, guns? 311's hardcore!" Then you'll see the parenthetical notation about a millimeter to the right and start to question the whole meaning of what it is to be hard in the first place.

But I chose "8:16 A.M.", because that's some personal shit right there. You know because it's a detail.

LMFAO

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 00:19 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm just laughing at the idea of anyone who listens to 311 being caught in a moral dilemma over whether or not to buy a gun.

If "Guns (Are For Pussies)" was an Ice Cube song, it'd be pretty sweet.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 00:22 (seventeen years ago) link

I even remember how the chorus goes now. :(

BORN TO ACT OUT
PARANOID WITH A GAT!
BORN TO ACT OUT
THINK YOU KNOW WHERE ITS AT
BORN TO ACT OUT
BUT YOU LOOKING LIKE A SISSY
BORN TO ACT OUT
GUNS ARE FOR PUSSIES

I wish I didn't have so much 311 lyrical stylee in my brain still.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 00:23 (seventeen years ago) link

i felt this way for a couple decades... until recently. nostalgia is a helluva drug and im loving listening back to some of this stuff lol. the nick hexum / george clanton album got me to approach it all from another angle i tihnk. i could come up w a good 20 track mix of good stuff post the s/t album.

I really like a lot of transistor

lets hear some blues on those synths (brimstead), Thursday, 27 October 2022 23:03 (two years ago) link

'p-nut beat that thing' is a phrase that often comes to me

They do the Shug a loo, do the Shy Tuna, do the Kemba Walker (fionnland), Thursday, 27 October 2022 23:09 (two years ago) link

xp yeah thats the one for me too. more spacey/proggy vs rappity/agro-y?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fn-2T_LKiso

also really love the title track, maybe their best single

Spottie, Thursday, 27 October 2022 23:10 (two years ago) link

lol, i don't think i've listened to transistor in the last 20 years, maybe i should pull it out give it a listen. it was in heavy rotation in '97 and '98, but my 311 phase didn't last very long. post-transistor i only know stuff that got played on the radio.

circles, Friday, 28 October 2022 01:52 (two years ago) link

these guys were totally a singles band for me. they have some good ones! and i just like the sound of Hexum's voice, especially with the like phases overdub or whatever it was they always did, gave it this really appealing sheen that really invites singing along. like i think if they had all the same exact songs but a different vocalist they would have had a devoted cult but no mainstream success at all.

Doctor Casino, Friday, 28 October 2022 03:31 (two years ago) link

yea the Clanton/Hexum album is what got me listening to old 311 singles I used to kinda like. I think they've probably held up better than a lot of the garbage people like me were into back then. fwiw that's why I loved the album with George Clanton, it kind of sounds like the 90's as you remembered them, as opposed to what it actually sounds like now when you plop the records on. all woozy and stoned, like a strange blur of memory. you do have to get past some pretty awful cover art though

frogbs, Friday, 28 October 2022 03:40 (two years ago) link

what's the consensus among fans about their career arc? like to me, it's "peaked with early singles Homebrew and Do You Right; Blue Album is a solid major-label distillation of their skills with three super solid singles; after that they put out too much stuff too fast and the lyrics and grooves are increasingly undercooked; Flowing is pretty cool though." but for all i know, among die-hards the last twenty years are actually the real golden era.

Doctor Casino, Friday, 28 October 2022 15:25 (two years ago) link

That's a good question. I feel like Transistor is regarded as their masterpiece by the true heads but I might be wrong about that

J. Sam, Friday, 28 October 2022 15:33 (two years ago) link

i think the people that hopped off the wagon like most of us here have transistor up there w the blue album. after transistor it seems like a grab bag of individual tracks. maybe ill go snoop around the 311 reddit or something.
