1st, then Main Course.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Friday, 4 January 2008 23:19 (seventeen years ago)

"Red chair, fade away . . ."

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Friday, 4 January 2008 23:20 (seventeen years ago)

I still haven't heard Main Course - wtf with so much stuff being out of print!

I'm givin it to Mr. Natural

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 4 January 2008 23:22 (seventeen years ago)

I would expect the top 2 contenders to be Odessa and SNF but maybe I am overestimating the voting interest :(

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 4 January 2008 23:51 (seventeen years ago)

A Kick in the Head...

dell, Friday, 4 January 2008 23:57 (seventeen years ago)

agh I think I deleted that by mistake thinking it was a comp

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 4 January 2008 23:57 (seventeen years ago)

was that ever actually released anyway?

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 4 January 2008 23:59 (seventeen years ago)

Nah, so it might have been weird to have put it on the poll. I like it lots , though, so it may very well be my fave. Beyond that for me it's probably gonna be between 1st, Mr. Natural, The Main Course, or Spirits Having Flown.

dell, Saturday, 5 January 2008 00:02 (seventeen years ago)

I've never heard it - any thoughts on why it was rejected? Does it sound out of place with their other stuff of the period? I like that whole soft-soul thing they had goin on in the early 70s.

Shakey Mo Collier, Saturday, 5 January 2008 00:08 (seventeen years ago)

Shakey, I don't know why it was rejected; it's mysterious to me.

The soul thing hadn't begun quite yet; I guess that came in w/Mr. Natural...basically it's more along the lines of Life in a Tin Can, except the songs are better.

dell, Saturday, 5 January 2008 00:18 (seventeen years ago)

I would expect the top 2 contenders to be Odessa and SNF
I voted for Odessa but felt guilty about it because it seemed like an obvious choice.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Saturday, 5 January 2008 01:30 (seventeen years ago)

saturday night fever shouldn't be on here but i voted for it anyway

winston, Saturday, 5 January 2008 02:16 (seventeen years ago)

I'll be interested to see the results for this. My friend keeps raving about their 60's stuff. I know jack shit about their career, really, beyond Spirits Having Flown and SNF. I remember Paul Westerberg of Replacements covered "I Started A Joke" when I saw him play live about 5 years ago. I also remember that my dad had the "Life In A Tin Can" album when I was a kid, but if I ever tried to play it I can't recall what I thought of it. He certainly never played it to my knowledge.

Bimble, Saturday, 5 January 2008 05:23 (seventeen years ago)

Nothing quite like the "1st" which wasn't the first. A wonderful pop album.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 5 January 2008 05:44 (seventeen years ago)

I almost voted for 1st. I also like that other album that copied the cover art by the Essex Green or the Ladybug Transistor.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Saturday, 5 January 2008 05:45 (seventeen years ago)

Shakey, I imagine that whatever's out of print right now will soon be back in, with Reprise/WMG having control of the catalog.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Saturday, 5 January 2008 12:06 (seventeen years ago)

what no Robin's Reign?

whisperineddhurt, Saturday, 5 January 2008 23:11 (seventeen years ago)

That whole bloc of votes is going to go to Odessa.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Saturday, 5 January 2008 23:18 (seventeen years ago)

I am pretty sure "Odessa" will get a re-released soon at least. They did the three that went before it last year, and "Odessa" is probably more famous than that lot. So only a matter of time, I guess.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 5 January 2008 23:52 (seventeen years ago)

1st!

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Sunday, 6 January 2008 09:52 (seventeen years ago)

Ist and Horizontal are good.

'Close My Eyes' on 1st seems to feature a goat at 40 seconds and 120 seconds into the song.

Bob Six, Sunday, 6 January 2008 11:38 (seventeen years ago)

And it was a bit much to include some 'Revolver' out-takes like "The Earnest of Being George' on Horizontal.

Bob Six, Sunday, 6 January 2008 11:40 (seventeen years ago)

'tis Odessa for me, definitely.

t**t, Sunday, 6 January 2008 13:10 (seventeen years ago)

I love Odessa and voted for it.

Best recent Bee Gees stories: was in a cab in Mexico City a couple of months ago and the cabbie had filled a cassette tape with "To Love Somebody" and was just playing it through. So we got one hour of that song (traffic is terrible there). I wonder what would make a person do that?

Euler, Sunday, 6 January 2008 17:40 (seventeen years ago)

Mm, love?

t**t, Sunday, 6 January 2008 17:56 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Monday, 7 January 2008 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

As awesome of a pop record as Odessa is, Main Course owns this.

Naive Teen Idol, Monday, 7 January 2008 04:47 (seventeen years ago)

I cannot see anything newer than "Odessa" deserving votes here.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 7 January 2008 07:03 (seventeen years ago)

don't you ever get tired of being wrong

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 7 January 2008 19:12 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

three-way tie! wtf

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 00:02 (seventeen years ago)

Shoot, I flaked out and never voted. I would have gone Main Course, though...Nights On Broadway plus Jive Talkin' as leadoff tracks? Plus Fanny ? Those three alone are too monumental to ignore.

Mr. Natural is a really interesting one, too, though...

The results were pretty much exactly as predicted, right? Plus 6,6,6-- guided by the Beast, apparently.

I never knew there were so many Odessa lovers.

dell, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 00:10 (seventeen years ago)

I was the lone vote for Mr. Natural apparently - currently oop but I recenty picked up a vinyl copy and it gets the most rotation in mi casa

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 00:13 (seventeen years ago)

Nice.

For tie-breaker I would vote either SNF or 1st.

dell, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 00:14 (seventeen years ago)

I'd give it to either 1st or Odessa cuz I was kinda conflicted about including SNF at all (what with its inclusion of previously released material and songs by other artists)

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 00:21 (seventeen years ago)

I was hoping Main Course was gonna get more votes.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 01:17 (seventeen years ago)

I love this:

The song was originally called "Drive Talking". The song's rhythm was modeled after the sound a car would make crossing the Biscayne Bay into Miami

dell, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 01:32 (seventeen years ago)

yeah according to "This Is Where I Came In" doc they didn't even know what "jive" was

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 01:37 (seventeen years ago)

Wait, what is the story w/that documentary? I've never heard of it and am having trouble googling info about it.

dell, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 02:04 (seventeen years ago)

Hm. Just heard a cover of "Spicks and Specks" on the radio.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 02:06 (seventeen years ago)

By The Status Quo.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 02:14 (seventeen years ago)

it was a documentary recorded to coincide with that 1999 One Night Only reunion tour DVD, I think...? At least, the DVD I rented had the documentary on one disc and a show from that tour on the other. It was only okay as docs go (lot of talking head shots) but some really cool early footage and little factoids.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 02:42 (seventeen years ago)

Oh, thanks. I've seen the "One Night Only" concert video, (which was pretty great, actually) but never any documentaries.

As a kid I thought Jive Talkin' was the greatest song ever...and then there was a long lapse in my Bee Gees appreciation, aside from discovering some of their early stuff at some point. A couple of years ago, though, I became ignited by Gregg Turkington's reviews of their discography on Mark Prindle's website, and then I ended up going ga-ga over most of their catalog.

It also blew my mind to realize how many songs Barry Gibb has written that I had no idea he was behind (the Grease theme, for one!)...and also the band has had such an amazing longevity coupled with vitality that places them up in some seriously rarefied company. I kind of burnt out on them after my initial (re-re-)discovery, but I think I'm ready to take the plunge again. I am already nostalgic for my listening habits of late '05, apparently...

dell, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 03:47 (seventeen years ago)

The silent majority

PappaWheelie V, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 04:18 (seventeen years ago)

I'm confused. So what did you vote or not vote for?

dell, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 04:25 (seventeen years ago)

The results are more correct than the sales figures at least.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 09:46 (seventeen years ago)

one year passes...

huh finally got my paws on A Kick in the Head... wtf with this album! I dunno if Home Again Rivers is the only time they tried that mellow, pedal-steel country arrangement style but that is really beautiful. And an anti-Kissinger song!!?

much love

Barry Gibb and the Bee Gees Sing and Play 14 Barry Gibb Songs

OK, this one's got me rolling on the floor helpless with laughter (there must be a shorter way of saying that!)

What, was this when he was 12 and he sang this into a cassette machine with some imaginary pals?

Mark G, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 22:50 (fifteen years ago)

Horizontal was totally overlooked in this poll!

Mr. Natural and Main Course robbed.

beta blog, Friday, 29 October 2010 21:47 (fourteen years ago)

Cucumber Castle, Trafalgar, Idea, Horizontal: all robbed!

nerve_pylon, Friday, 29 October 2010 21:54 (fourteen years ago)

In which case, "Saturday Night Fever" was the thief. Their first album (well... after their voices changed and they moved from Oz anyway...) remains their best one. A great psych pop album.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Friday, 29 October 2010 22:37 (fourteen years ago)
