Any votes for any song following "To Live Is to Die" should be discounted.

Pleasant Plains, Saturday, 5 January 2008 20:07 (seventeen years ago) link

"Master of Puppets".

Alex in NYC, Saturday, 5 January 2008 20:33 (seventeen years ago) link

Frayed Ends of Sanity = underrated

Jordan, Saturday, 5 January 2008 20:36 (seventeen years ago) link

Myself I'm torn - MoP is very dear to my heart, but ...And Justice is an absolute monster and deserves some props. As far as dynamics go, it's hard to argue with One as well.

chap, Saturday, 5 January 2008 20:38 (seventeen years ago) link

Master of Puppies!

smurfherder, Saturday, 5 January 2008 22:48 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh fuck. Toughest poll ever? I'm voting for Four Horsemen because it's probably my favorite Metallica song, but all of them up through "To Live is to Die" (excepting "Frayed Ends of Sanity" and "...And Justice for All") are pretty much tied for second.

novaheat, Saturday, 5 January 2008 22:58 (seventeen years ago) link

Disposable Heroes

rock_is_dead, Saturday, 5 January 2008 23:04 (seventeen years ago) link

"One". Would have voted for "Nothing Else Matters" had it been epic enough.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 5 January 2008 23:05 (seventeen years ago) link

no creeping death?

latebloomer, Saturday, 5 January 2008 23:12 (seventeen years ago) link

fucking Master owns.

J0hn D., Saturday, 5 January 2008 23:13 (seventeen years ago) link

I agree that these songs are over seven minutes long, but "Orion" is the one that's fucking EPIC

Pleasant Plains, Sunday, 6 January 2008 01:04 (seventeen years ago) link

"Disposable Heroes" seconded.

Ivan, Sunday, 6 January 2008 01:17 (seventeen years ago) link

DH contains what is probably my favourite Metallica solo - the bit where the rhythm starts duelling with the lead at 5.05 blows my head off every time.

chap, Sunday, 6 January 2008 01:22 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, Puppets all the way. But really, when it came to epics, Metallica could do no wrong back then.

A. Begrand, Sunday, 6 January 2008 01:39 (seventeen years ago) link

Orion for the intro alone, not to mention the interlude and subsequent harmonized solo

calstars, Sunday, 6 January 2008 04:05 (seventeen years ago) link

voted for "One" just ahead of "Orion" and "To Live Is To Die"

THOUGH "To Live Is To Die" has the awesome spoken-word bit that I misremember as either "these are the times that try men's souls" (Thomas Paine) or "this battle will make your blood boil" (Jackal, nintendo game). I prefer those versions (must make remix).

Euler, Sunday, 6 January 2008 17:54 (seventeen years ago) link

Bump

chap, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 14:20 (seventeen years ago) link

well it's gotta be 'puppets'
'orion' and 'one' would take 2nd and 3rd place respectively.

i also adore 'ktulu' and 'disposable heroes' it should be noted

Charlie Howard, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 14:31 (seventeen years ago) link

To Live Is To Die

stevie, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 14:33 (seventeen years ago) link

Creeping Death seems to be the epitome of an epic, but isn't here. Puppets, Heroes and One kick total ass.

Bill Magill, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 14:59 (seventeen years ago) link

I voted Call of Ktulu, just because.

Billy Pilgrim, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 15:31 (seventeen years ago) link

Creeping Death seems to be the epitome of an epic, but isn't here.

It's under seven minutes unfortuneately. One must have some kind of scientific vetting process for such things, otherwise it would just turn into a 'best Metallica song' poll (which actually would be managable if you only went up to the Black Album, hmmm...)

chap, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 15:50 (seventeen years ago) link

too hard to choose really, so i'll plug rodrigo y gabriela's version of 'orion' instead. it's absolutely mesmerizing.

saxomophone, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 15:56 (seventeen years ago) link

best song between 6:30 and 7 minutes? (i don't have anything after black album, sorry):

Fade to Black (6:57)
Seek & Destroy (6:55)
The Small Hours (6:43)
Blackened (6:42)
Helpless (6:38)
Ride The Lightning (6:37)
The Thing That Should Not Be (6:36)
Creeping Death (6:36)
The Shortest Straw (6:35)

I like all of those

Billy Pilgrim, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 16:01 (seventeen years ago) link

Gonna say "Ktulu" because it needs more love and it's got my favourite acoustic intro of any of their epics. Cliff Burton's epiglottal bass-noises remind me of "By-Tor and the Snow Dog".

Myonga Vön Bontee, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 16:02 (seventeen years ago) link

Either Blackened, Creeping Death or The Shortest Straw.

xpost

chap, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 16:03 (seventeen years ago) link

Fade or Creeping, too tough to call

Bill Magill, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 16:44 (seventeen years ago) link

itunes tells me mine is seek & destroy

Billy Pilgrim, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 16:47 (seventeen years ago) link

Has there ever been a better, more succinct name for a heavy metal song than Creeping Death? I don't think so.

chap, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 16:58 (seventeen years ago) link

Always had a soft spot for "One", of course "Master of Puppets" is supreme....

amazing that their shit era has more epics than the classic era

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Thursday, 10 January 2008 03:22 (seventeen years ago) link

Fixxxer...Lover Man...Invisible Kid...

what crazy names these are. i wonder what any of those later ones sounds like. not enough to actually listen to them, of course

Billy Pilgrim, Thursday, 10 January 2008 03:25 (seventeen years ago) link

Fixxxer actually wasn't that bad.

Loverman was a Nick Cave cover and I don't remember it being great.

Invisible Kid was a REALLY strange song.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Thursday, 10 January 2008 03:26 (seventeen years ago) link

so i'll plug rodrigo y gabriela's version of 'orion' instead.

Your plug was not wasted.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Thursday, 10 January 2008 03:28 (seventeen years ago) link

Reggaeton Metallica

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Thursday, 10 January 2008 03:29 (seventeen years ago) link

are those last 6 songs all from st. anger?
no wonder the record blew. boring, LONG, repetitive, badly produced songs bereft of any melody.

Charlie Howard, Thursday, 10 January 2008 03:46 (seventeen years ago) link

oh there were melodies....just very bad ones.

if I remember correctly the only songs I gave a real shit about was St. Anger, and Dirty Window or whatever the fuck it was called.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Thursday, 10 January 2008 03:47 (seventeen years ago) link

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Friday, 11 January 2008 00:01 (seventeen years ago) link

apparently russian vodka and bear hunting does a lot for one's creative energy

Charlie Howard, Friday, 11 January 2008 05:10 (seventeen years ago) link

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Saturday, 12 January 2008 00:01 (seventeen years ago) link

Yay, St. Finger got shut out!

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Saturday, 12 January 2008 01:11 (seventeen years ago) link

if i had voted in this poll, i would have voted for master of puppets. because there really isn't any other choice, is there?

Emily Bjurnhjam, Saturday, 12 January 2008 03:04 (seventeen years ago) link

Yay, the correct winner. I may do a best Metallica song up to the Black Album poll tomorrow when I'm not drunk.

chap, Saturday, 12 January 2008 03:16 (seventeen years ago) link

surprised Frayed Ends got a vote.

Pretty boring song...interesting mid-section although it's pretty much just a pastiche of riffs.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Saturday, 12 January 2008 03:17 (seventeen years ago) link

it's pretty much just a pastiche of riffs.

Yes, but a melange of 80s Metallica is still pretty fucking hot.

chap, Saturday, 12 January 2008 03:26 (seventeen years ago) link

I got that '1000 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die' book from my dad for christmas a few years ago, and the entry for '...And Justice' described the midsection of the album as a 'spiralling riff salad', which is pretty OTM.

chap, Saturday, 12 January 2008 03:39 (seventeen years ago) link

i always found Eye of the Beholder to be underappreciated from that album

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Saturday, 12 January 2008 03:45 (seventeen years ago) link

Eye of the Beholer is incredible!

Moral of the story: I just really love Metallica.

chap, Saturday, 12 January 2008 04:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Cliff Em All is still one of my favorite videos (yes, I have a VHS of it)

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Saturday, 12 January 2008 04:05 (seventeen years ago) link

i voted for frayed ends. it's got a pastiche of great riffs. the riff under the solo section is totally sick.
