Trying to like....

On the Panda Bear thread a lot of people give out to Mordechai about trying too hard to understand what is good about Person Pitch. There are a lot of variations on the "It's just not your bag" theme. I disagree with this because I think forcing yourself to listen to things until you enjoy them can be really positive and open your ears for other things which you will then also enjoy, thus broadening the amount of music available to you.

For example, when I was a few years younger than I am now, Sonic Youth were "cool". I only really liked pop music and country music but I decided I wanted to understand what all the fuss was. At first I didn't like it, it was kinda noisey, but over time it opened my ears to all kinds of things from Slint, Boredoms, My Bloody Valentine, Black Dice, Lightning Bolt; basically all kinds of Rock that I wouldn't normally have listened to. Some of my favourite albums of last year, that I loved and totally enjoyed were Eric Copeland, Black Dice and No Age, albums I would have been initially resistant to if it weren't for that initial effort to listen to a particular type of music.

Sorry if there is already a thread about this. Seems like a bit of an obvious question so I wouldn't be surprised, but couldn't find etc.

I'm still not sure whether I should try to like Miles Davis 80's stuff or not. First of all because it's pretty hard to enjoy and second because I'm afraid what other music it might lead me to.

But I guess there is a fine line between "forcing to like" and repeated listening.

If I haven't liked Tortoise the first five times, I doubt I'll like them the sixth, but it is possible.
