Flogging Molly C/D, S/D

I get the feeling Flogging Molly aren't too popular in these here parts, but I quite enjoy them and thought there might be some other people here who agree. I've been listening to the new album, Float, and it's quite good. Not as crazy energetic as their previous work, but the mellower songs allow the songwriting to stand out more. Anyone else have any thoughts on the band?

they totally fucking suck

terrible band

Isn't the singer the guy from Fastway, or something bizarre like that? Anyway, I wanted to liked them -- hoped they'd kick like the Dropkick Murphys or the first Pogues album or something, and they'd be another good thing to put on the jukeboxes on the 20 Irish bars in my neighborhood when I run out of Thin Lizzy songs -- but last time I tried, they struck me as pretty bleh. Then again, I never liked Black 47 much either, so what do I know.

Well, it looks like this is going to be a solo conversation...

Jeff Treppel, Monday, 7 January 2008 02:12 (seventeen years ago) link

I thought "Devil's Dance Floor" was a great, great song. Everything else I've heard from them has been unlistenable.

milo z, Monday, 7 January 2008 02:18 (seventeen years ago) link

"Devil's Dance Floor" actually happens to be my favorite song by them, and what got me into the band. I'm sort of curious why people think they're so terrible, though -- Chuck expounded on his reasons, but nobody else has really explained why they have such an adverse reaction.

Jeff Treppel, Monday, 7 January 2008 02:20 (seventeen years ago) link

So...am I totally listening for the wrong stuff, or what?

xhuxk, Monday, 7 January 2008 02:25 (seventeen years ago) link

What have you heard by them?

Jeff Treppel, Monday, 7 January 2008 02:27 (seventeen years ago) link

they struck me as a more of an Irish parody than the Dropkick Murphys, without the songwriting or heart that kind of made up for the so-so Oi! of the first few DM albums.

"Devil's Dance Floor" has two great hooks (pan pipes, "up to heaven and past avalon"), which was two more than the rest of that album.

milo z, Monday, 7 January 2008 02:29 (seventeen years ago) link

Unlistenable is probably harsh. Just dull and bad.

You are right.

Years upon years ago, I saw Rocket From the Crypt put on a typically great show in north San Diego County. For some reason there was this terrible band opening for them. They were of course Flogging Molly. I loathed them on sight. Then even more upon hearing them.

My hate is calm and contemplative now. But just seeing the thread title brought it all back.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 7 January 2008 02:30 (seventeen years ago) link

My search list, at least prior to the new album (which hasn't been released yet):
The Worst Day since Yesterday, The Likes of You Again, Black Friday Rule, Devil's Dance Floor, Drunken Lullabies, Rebels of the Sacred Heart, Another Bag of Bricks, Screaming at the Wailing Wall, the Seven Deadly Sins, Factory Girls (with Lucinda Williams!)

Jeff Treppel, Monday, 7 January 2008 02:30 (seventeen years ago) link

Chuck: I think, out of the songs on my search list, you'd probably like the last three of the most. "Screaming at the Wailing Wall" and "The Seven Deadly Sins" are raucous jigs, and "Factory Girls" is actually a rather sweet ballad.

Ned: I've seen them live, and they were very good. Something about the Irish folk stuff just gets me, though. I love that sound.

Jeff Treppel, Monday, 7 January 2008 02:33 (seventeen years ago) link

Conversely, not a big Rocket from the Crypt fan.

Jeff Treppel, Monday, 7 January 2008 02:33 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, I've never really seen what the big deal about RFTC was. (Though I did like RFTT, FWTW.)

Jeff, I will try to check out those songs.

xhuxk, Monday, 7 January 2008 02:49 (seventeen years ago) link

don't get the hate.

The discs suffocate them a bit, but live, Flogging Molly are a fucking treat.

they wiped the floor with the Bosstones live back around 2000 or so.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 04:47 (seventeen years ago) link

and for the record I like Dropkick Murphys and Pogues too

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 04:49 (seventeen years ago) link

Heard two records, "The Kilburn High Road" is the only track that really stood out. Lots of skirly, tweedly stuff. If they were all like that then they'd be in business.

hugo, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 17:18 (seventeen years ago) link

Cant say I have ever heard them.

The Ghost Of Dave Ling, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 17:41 (seventeen years ago) link

As a former fan of Fastway (I don't care what you think, "Say What You Will" remains a great goddamn song), I've always been curious to hear Flogging Molly.

I like "Drunken Lullabies," but nothing else they've done has ever really hit me. But then I don't really like Gogol Bordello or any of the other "let's mix punk with our native music cause we're so rebellious" bands.

They have a my space page (http://www.myspace.com/floggingMolly"> http://www.myspace.com/floggingMolly), but I'm not sure the tracks on there are the best introduction. They will tell you how the band sounds, though.

Jeff Treppel, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 01:17 (seventeen years ago) link

Well, that didn't work very well. Click on the second one.

Jeff Treppel, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 01:18 (seventeen years ago) link

thanks 4 the add

Mackro Mackro, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 01:20 (seventeen years ago) link

one year passes...

I heard them in a coffee shop the other day, not knowing what was playing. They sounds exactly like the Pogues in a shameless ripoff sort of way. Haven't listened closely to them though.

God, this band are shite.

You just made a fatal mistake, Mr. Candyass! (Eisbaer), Monday, 25 February 2013 03:52 (eleven years ago) link

I was once stuck in a cafe for 3 hours with a Flogging Molly live video playing on repeat the whole time. Never thought I'd say this, but this band is actually worse than the Mighty Mighty Bosstones.
