What a toughie - I love every one of these songs dearly, with the exception of Biscuit (which is still pretty good). I've decided to include the non-UK track It's a Fire because it's excellent.

TS: "Stangers" vs "It Could Be Sweet" vs "Wandering Stars" vs "Numb" vs "Roads" vs "Glory Box"

This is DIABOLICAL

HI DERE, Monday, 7 January 2008 13:20 (seventeen years ago)

"It Could Be Sweet", methinks?

Joe, Monday, 7 January 2008 13:20 (seventeen years ago)

I think I'll go for Pedestal or Roads. Haven't made my mind up though.

chap, Monday, 7 January 2008 13:22 (seventeen years ago)

Roads just beats Glory Box and It's A Fire (you're right, it's a great track)

Dr.C, Monday, 7 January 2008 13:48 (seventeen years ago)

Gotta go with "Wandering Stars," but it just narrowly eschews "Glory Box".

Alex in NYC, Monday, 7 January 2008 13:58 (seventeen years ago)

Eleven way tie for first?

Mark G, Monday, 7 January 2008 13:59 (seventeen years ago)

'biscuit' for me because it's the creepiest

Charlie Howard, Monday, 7 January 2008 14:03 (seventeen years ago)

i wanna be a woman

mookieproof, Monday, 7 January 2008 14:05 (seventeen years ago)

Fun Faith No More live cover of Glory Box: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIRCutbaOmY

chap, Monday, 7 January 2008 14:08 (seventeen years ago)

I suspect I'll be the only one to vote "Sour Times". But my favourite moment on that record is that impossibly slinky three-syllable pronunciation of "temptress". ("Glorybox")

Myonga Vön Bontee, Monday, 7 January 2008 14:42 (seventeen years ago)

srsly no filler on this LP altho still think the order is wack

Strangers tho

blueski, Monday, 7 January 2008 14:45 (seventeen years ago)

Yup, I'm going with Strangers too, narrowly from Biscuit, then Glory Box, then Wandering Stars.

Just got offed, Monday, 7 January 2008 14:50 (seventeen years ago)

This thread has made me realise that, with 2 or 3 exceptions, I don't know what any of the songs on the album are called, even though I love it. I'll listen to it tonight then vote.

nate woolls, Monday, 7 January 2008 14:58 (seventeen years ago)

i had that with the second album for some time because i just taped it off a friend. 'Portishead' is a good follow up to a great debut.

blueski, Monday, 7 January 2008 15:02 (seventeen years ago)

Every one's a winner, baby, and that's the truth.
I went with "It Could Be Sweet" though. Was strongly tempted by "Wandering Star".

DavidM, Monday, 7 January 2008 15:14 (seventeen years ago)

"Wandering Star" juuuust ahead of "Roads" but I could go for any of these except "It Could Be Sweet", which is still awesome but def. not my fav.

Euler, Monday, 7 January 2008 15:30 (seventeen years ago)

The way Beth signs off her vocals on It Could Be Sweet with a barely audible sigh is one of the many many great moments on the album.

There seem to be a few takers for roads already, so I went with Pedestal - the trumpet solo is orgasmic.

chap, Monday, 7 January 2008 16:34 (seventeen years ago)

glory box, just for "for ever, and evvvvveeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr"

tissp, Monday, 7 January 2008 16:42 (seventeen years ago)

No-one repping for Mysterons? The beat! The theremin!

ledge, Monday, 7 January 2008 16:47 (seventeen years ago)

Sour Times. Don't care.

kiss out the jams, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 07:24 (seventeen years ago)

the heavy live version of Strangers made me realise it's my favourite track on this

jabba hands, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 09:04 (seventeen years ago)

ROADS.

The Brainwasher, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 09:42 (seventeen years ago)

"Roads" yeah.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 09:52 (seventeen years ago)

Voted "Mysterons" just for the hell of it. One of the very few albums of its time to actually improve with age. (Where's the Maxinquaye poll?)

Ioannis, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 10:03 (seventeen years ago)

Roads, just ahead of Mysterons.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 10:14 (seventeen years ago)

Bah, I accidentally voted for "It's A Fire" instead of "Numb", which I couldn't bear coming last. The only one I don't adore is "Biscuit" and even that's pretty great.

edwardo, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 10:41 (seventeen years ago)

This is impossible. The first six tracks (not counting It's A Fire) are all excellent. I'll go for Strangers, but could have gone for any of those.

Nasty, Brutish & Short, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 11:25 (seventeen years ago)

The track names seem like "working titles that never got changed"

So help a buddy time:

Mysterons (i.e. Theremin)
Sour Times (Nobody loves me, it's true..)
Strangers (help a buddy)
It Could Be Sweet (easy)
Wandering Stars (easy)
It's a Fire (vaguely remember it off the single)
Numb (cause a chilllddddd...)
Roads (big orchestral swirl in the middle)
Pedestal (easy)
Biscuit (help a buddy)
Glory Box (give me a reason to be.... a woman)

OK, so clue me with a reminder for the helpabuddy tracks there.

Mark G, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 11:29 (seventeen years ago)

Strangers - "Did you realise the world inside belongs to Hugh"

ledge, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 11:37 (seventeen years ago)

Biscuit - slow fat man singing "I'll never fall in love again"

ledge, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 11:39 (seventeen years ago)

Biscuit: Got it.

Strangers.. nope, try the music for me?

Mark G, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 11:42 (seventeen years ago)

Actually, I think I have it. Quite drummy in places?

Mark G, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 11:44 (seventeen years ago)

CAN ANYBODY SEE THE LIGHT

blueski, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 11:47 (seventeen years ago)

drummy, yup - then they disappear for a bit and a kind of lightly strummed/plucked guitar comes in.

ledge, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 11:58 (seventeen years ago)

Yep, got it.

I sound like Pash on the mod board.

Mark G, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 12:28 (seventeen years ago)

Hang on, where the fuck did It's A Fire come from?

Matt DC, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 13:52 (seventeen years ago)

Bonus track on non-Uk editions, placed in middle for some reason. It's really good:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Y26KpgZknY

chap, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 15:57 (seventeen years ago)

I didn't buy this until years later and it had It's A Fire on it. don't think it was an import copy so did later UK editions include it?

blueski, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 15:59 (seventeen years ago)

No.

Mark G, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 16:06 (seventeen years ago)

actually, i am thinking 'biscuit' now i've actually listened to the album again.

tissp, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 16:23 (seventeen years ago)

"Roads"

stephen, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 16:53 (seventeen years ago)

I've narrowed it down a little:

TS: "Stangers" vs "It Could Be Sweet" vs "Numb" vs "Roads"

HI DERE, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 16:56 (seventeen years ago)

Bah, I accidentally voted for "It's A Fire" instead of "Numb", which I couldn't bear coming last.

Don't worry edwardo I got your back.

Leee, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 17:14 (seventeen years ago)

"Sour Times" was the official anthem of the 1994 Noodle Vague World Cup team. So that.

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 17:48 (seventeen years ago)

i went back to my Irish roots that Summer.

blueski, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 17:54 (seventeen years ago)

Oh I didn't mean the footie. I just stuck it on a lot of jukeboxes whilst drunk.

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 17:56 (seventeen years ago)

Actually I put most of them on a lot of jukeboxes but "Sour Times" and "Wandering Stars" aren't gonna get enough love on here.

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 17:58 (seventeen years ago)

"Wandering Stars" got my vote; followed by "Roads" and the rest of the LP.

dblcheeksneek, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 18:30 (seventeen years ago)

isn't it "Wandering Star" rather than "Wandering Stars"? I love the title, because when the record came out I was first studying Plato and I realized that the ancient Greek word for "planet" translates as "wandering star". I have no idea if the band is that brainiac but it was exciting as hell to think so.

Euler, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 19:07 (seventeen years ago)

"It's a Fire" is my favorite, but "Roads", "Wandering Star", and "Stranger" are very close.

LeRooLeRoo, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 19:22 (seventeen years ago)

isn't it "Wandering Star" rather than "Wandering Stars"?

Most signs point to yes (and I always thought it was the singular, not the plural {regardless of what Gibbons sings}).

dblcheeksneek, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 19:31 (seventeen years ago)

Maybe it's a UK-only bonus character.

dblcheeksneek, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 19:32 (seventeen years ago)

Roads

nate woolls, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 19:35 (seventeen years ago)

isn't it "Wandering Star" rather than "Wandering Stars"?

It is a singular star, my mistake.

* The chorus and title of "Wandering Star" are taken from the Bible; "...wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever." (Jude 1:13)

Huh.

chap, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 20:27 (seventeen years ago)

oh, the biblical thing is cool, not least because Jude's letter is in the New Testament, and so written in ancient Greek.

Euler, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 21:57 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Monday, 14 January 2008 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

Every track has a friend or two!

Mark G, Monday, 14 January 2008 08:53 (seventeen years ago)

Only four votes for Sour Times is a bit of a surprise. Not that I voted for it mind.

Matt DC, Monday, 14 January 2008 09:38 (seventeen years ago)

it's not like one vote ever made a difference!

tissp, Monday, 14 January 2008 14:10 (seventeen years ago)

this was so hard i didn't vote.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Monday, 14 January 2008 14:34 (seventeen years ago)

I'm glad I voted for "Strangers" but I sort of wish I'd voted for "It Could Be Sweet" after seeing the results.

I love this album so fucking much.

HI DERE, Monday, 14 January 2008 14:40 (seventeen years ago)

Strangers turned out to be the dark horse here.
