Rolling T-Pain Thread 2008

Kind of a joke thread based on his ubiquity in '07, but depending on how long that lasts, possibly also an actual functional thread to use throughout the year, keeping the rappa ternt sanga from fudging up the rolling R&B and rap threads. T-Pain starts the year with his 3rd #1 single, Flo Rida's "Low," which is still slowly growing on me. A lot of news outlets are reporting that he has a new 'album' called No Love Without Pain out this week, but that appears to be just an unauthorized best-of mixtape by DJ RPM. "Church" was kind of a flop so I think the Epiphany singles have run their course (although I wish his label would go ahead and push "Backseat Action," which has gotten plenty of club/mix show spins), and his 3rd album appears to be due out this summer. His '08 will probably look a bit like Lil Jon's 2004, when he reached such a saturation point that all sorts of random artists you'd never expect him to collaborate with grab him for their first single (apparently Mariah locked him down for her lead single, which my mind can't even process right now). The question is whether the backlash will eventually trump his popularity this year, or if he drops a song or album good enough to silence the critics or get (more of) them in his corner. Get your predictions in now and laugh/cry later. I'm kind of rooting for the guy just because he's funnier and more talented (Epiphany is really musically varied for an entirely self-produced album) than most of his barely-sangin' peers, but he definitely needs to step his game up before his moment runs out and people get too sick of the autotune being his primary distinguishing characteristic.

The latest single featuring T-Pain is "Boss" by Rick Ross:
http://www.xxlmag.com/online/?p=18096
Based on his momentum right now it's fair to say just about anything featuring T-Pain will be massive but I don't really hear a hit in this one, the most interesting about which is that the phrase "thus far" pops up in the chorus repeatedly.

don't really know what i want from t this year... ideally like him to take a breather for a month or two (maybe a produce a track or two on the low like he's started to do) until this mariah thing drops, then come back hard with something of his own. random stuff like this ross and dolla is just annoying the shit outta me right now

r|t|c, Monday, 7 January 2008 16:18 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah...but given that different labels and artists operate on completely different schedules, I don't think a break like that would make any difference, since at any given moment the songs he has out could've been made 2 or 6 or 12 months ago. And going away for a while for the sake of going away (or to protest a label situation like Lil Jon did) is usually what makes an artist who's big at the moment disappear for good, so I can't fault him for striking while the iron's hot. If he keeps the quality up then I won't bitch about the quantity.

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 7 January 2008 16:26 (eighteen years ago)

yeah i'm aware that's the pragmatic way and all (altho quality is def being spread thin), it's just my personal pref right now.

on the other hand if i was t's manager i'd be forcing him at gunpoint to marry t-love and release 'rereturn of the b-girl 2008' together, so what do i know.

i was reading an ass old edition of entertainment weekly in a waiting room today and they interviewed missy about her new album and they asked her who she was working with and her first answer was of course t-pain

J0rdan S., Monday, 7 January 2008 22:35 (eighteen years ago)

I guess the poll thread could tell me, but of the last few months of T-Pain singles and collab-os what's really good?

Tim F, Monday, 7 January 2008 22:38 (eighteen years ago)

uummmmm a lot of good stuff on his album, 'backseat action' w/ shawnna and 'shottas' with kardi and cham (i imagine you'd really like that tim). 'kiss kiss' w/ chris brown really grew on me and he completely kills the '2 step' rmx (jim jones and e-40 are good too) (probably rap rmx of the year) and the song with twista 'creep fast' is pretty good as well.

Don't know why "Low" had to grow on you, it's pretty classic T-Pain... "Cyclone" and "Who The Fuck Is That?," on the other hand, are awful. Looking forward to his work with Mariah, should be interesting to say the least. "Tipsy" is his official next single, though I think they should've went with "Show U How".

The Brainwasher, Monday, 7 January 2008 23:10 (eighteen years ago)

"low" grew on me too. basically cuz it took me a while to not be annoyed by "low low low low low low low" and to sit through a whole flo rida verse

J0rdan S., Monday, 7 January 2008 23:11 (eighteen years ago)

-- The Brainwasher, Monday, 7 January 2008 23:10 (Yesterday) Link

that's surprising, "Tipsy" never occurred to me as a potential single (although I guess it at least contributes to the picture painted by "Buy U A Drank" and "Bartender" that the guy is apparently some kind of alcoholic). "Show U How" is good, though. I don't think "Low" is classic T-Pain, if anything he's the weak link of the song.

wish 'church' would fuck off already

brainwasher otm about 'show u how', it's that cute side t-pain never seems to wanna show

r|t|c, Friday, 22 February 2008 13:50 (seventeen years ago)

Kind of surprised that "Boss" seems to be doing well, or at least better than "Speedin'," sounded like such a non-starter to me. T-Pain's on the new Charlie Wilson single and I kind that combination vaguely promising but haven't heard it yet. I'm skeptical about "Shawty Get Loose," his collaboration with Lil Mama and a certain accordian-playing parodist, catching on outside the lowered expectations of 106 & Park and its internet equivalent, the Poptimists. "Low" is in its 9th week at #1, which I have to admit is just outrageous at this point.

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 22 February 2008 14:11 (seventeen years ago)

what's the song with the chorus that ends in "whooooo the heck is that?" it pretty much blows

J0rdan S., Friday, 22 February 2008 14:30 (seventeen years ago)

that's the bowlderized radio/video version of Dolla's "Who The Fuck Is That?" which I mentioned in the 2nd post on this thread. yeah, it sucks.

a local mix show DJ's been playing "Dance Floor" lately, at first I was excited that T-Pain had a good new solo single but it turns to be just a deep cut from his '05 album that I slept on. same station also tends to play some awful rough mix-sounding version of "Low" where the chorus seems to be scratch vocals by Flo Rida or someone else other than T-Pain, don't even like the real version that much but it's so grating to hear someone other than T-Pain attempt to sing it in his style.

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 22 February 2008 14:36 (seventeen years ago)

low is still number one?!!?!?

and what, Friday, 22 February 2008 14:39 (seventeen years ago)

fucks sake

and what, Friday, 22 February 2008 14:39 (seventeen years ago)

ive given up on radio completely because of that song

and what, Friday, 22 February 2008 14:41 (seventeen years ago)

totally otm as ive stated elsewhere

J0rdan S., Friday, 22 February 2008 14:45 (seventeen years ago)

weird thing is I've never heard "Low" that much on the radio (might be because I usually listen during the mix shows when they're emphasizing new stuff?), so I never actually got sick of it personally. I can see it getting really annoying if I heard it enough, though.

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 22 February 2008 14:47 (seventeen years ago)

Whatever; I still like Low and I've been listening to it for months.
More 'Shawty Get Loose' love, please.
Also, what the hell is wrong with 'Church'? And why so much hate on this thread in the first place? I'll agree that 'Who the Fuck' and 'Speedin' are weak, but for fuck's sake, it's T-PAIN. He's a special fellow.

forksclovetofu, Friday, 22 February 2008 16:48 (seventeen years ago)

I like "Church" and always have (although the crappy video and clean edit have dampened my enthusiasm a little). This thread was started out of love for T-Pain, but also with a critical eye on whether his '08 will be as good as his '07.

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 22 February 2008 16:49 (seventeen years ago)

church is okay but "shottas" and "backseat action" for life

J0rdan S., Friday, 22 February 2008 20:00 (seventeen years ago)

wasn't backseat action supposed to be a single

J0rdan S., Friday, 22 February 2008 20:00 (seventeen years ago)

I think at one point it was supposed to follow "Bartender" instead of "Church," yeah, got some mix show spins but that's about it. I think "Backseat Action" makes the best case for T-Pain's talents as a producer, those drums are fucking sick.

r|t|c, Friday, 22 February 2008 22:28 (seventeen years ago)

is this top hat stylin a new development or did i miss that too? i see he's got one on in the 'boss' vid too

i wonder if the 'boss' appeal is in how it's actually quite chill when you're expecting the usual nu-miami runners bombasticness. i wonder cos that appeal still totally escapes me obv. grim.

r|t|c, Friday, 22 February 2008 22:34 (seventeen years ago)

i'll ride for 'boss' i think the beat is fire

he's wearing a top hat in that 2 pistols vid too. i totally support top hats becoming RAP TREND of '08.

J0rdan S., Friday, 22 February 2008 22:38 (seventeen years ago)

that beat is so boring
the only thing i can think of is its riding purely on the momentum of the artists

ok i totally love "she got it"-- heard it like 68 times on the radio this weekend in stl and it finally totally clicked. justice league have effectively kicked the runners out of the slow, creepy, monolithic beats for florida dudes throne and i think that's a good thing.

J0rdan S., Monday, 28 April 2008 22:28 (seventeen years ago)

"Buss Yo Head" was a big steet joint for mnoths but I never totally warmed up to it. nice hard simple beat, though. loved their song on the Shawnna album, but those Shareefa tracks were two of my least favorites on the album, decent productions but boring songs.

it took the video for me to realize that this Ace Hood aka Ace Gutta guy on Khaled's new label isn't the same as the Ace Mack that was on Khaled's "Make It Rain" remix. shit is confusing! I'm really starting to feel like pre-top hat T-Pain was the end of his hot streak.

most endearingly o_O career move in recent T-Pain history is this video with Ukranian pop star Ruslana:

three weeks pass...

...

Though this alone doesn’t necessarily ruin a concert. T-Pain proved this in his set—for the most part, he didn’t even pretend to sing. Rather he played a ringleader, bringing out a contortionist, dancing midgets (one of them a mini-Britney Spears who actually stripped), and a fire-eater who set her pasties aflame. With each successive spectacle, the audience got more hyped.

back in 08 there was this site that i knew how to operate that would send you snippets of songs to your phone as ringtones, but then it died and i never bothered to find another site, so the only four custom ringtones i have on my phone are the choruses of "the boss", "she got it" and "beam me up" and terius' "fast car"

think i'm gonna put thr33 ringz in the car tomorrow...

the intro to t-pain's verse on "the boss" would make a great ringtone imo
