...?
I was looking at this (well, volume one) and got severely angry at the bottom text. Good album, though.

Also any Fripp cover with a 1200-word dissertation on the listening experience.

er, the above image should be (a) from the LP and (b) Virgin, not Geffen.

Prog and black metal to thread although I love pretentious covers as long as they aren't tasteless (that is, as long as they aren't black metal ones...)
― Geir Hongro, Monday, 7 January 2008 23:07 (eighteen years ago)
Anyway, this cover fits perfectly into this thread, and yet it's one of the best covers ever made:

The XTC sleeve is funny, which immediately spares it from inclusion.

Hipgnosis did that XTC cover right? They pretty much get a pass from me always, because of the humor.
How about any belle and sebastian album cover! Before all the spit wads go flying, try and tell me they don't wear pretension on their sleeves (clothing or book) like a badge of honor.
― matinee, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 01:06 (eighteen years ago)
That XTC cover is just brilliant and funny, but I can understand that a rampant anti-rockist may find it slightly pretentious. It is kind of "rockist" in mocking how pop music is very much a corporate thing.
― Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 01:08 (eighteen years ago)
Fair enough.

Steinman's sleeve is simply too sublimely ridiculous to be pretentious.

On second thoughts, I guess that's also in the 'plain silly' category rather than pretentious.
― Daniel Giraffe, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 16:17 (eighteen years ago)
Or even the 'plain bad' category. Who knows what she was thinking - she usually has good quality control when it comes to record sleeves.

This is a fucking PAINTING! The guy's very first album, he already considers himself legend enough to warrant a portrait of him and his guitar.

xp
Is that more or less appropriate to a Nirvana album?
(trucker hats will always remind of Gear's housemate shenanigans)

I hate citing the work of my former place of employment, but on the subject of the Nirvana kid...read this!
