Davey Graham - C or D?

Following on from the blues-related thread below, I've never been a blues or folk fan, to be honest, but for some reason I love the amalgamation of the two (John Fahey being another example). Anyway, I played DG's Folk, Blues & Beyond at a party, expecting the What's this incredible new sound? kind of thing & it got the thumbs down, so is it me? The bit where the drums come in on Moanin'...bloody brilliant!

i'd be lying if i said i knew his work well - i know bert jansch's stuff better - but an absolute classic. i'm about to start reading "dazzling stranger" the bert jansch biography which also brings in much of the folk boom of the period and graham did most of the ground work for others to build on at a later point...

Classic, tho' I think the 'English John Fahey' comparisons are not that accurate or illuminating - Graham much more of a jazzer than Fahey (check out DG's versions of 'Watermelon Man' or 'The Fakir') and obv. closer to the English folk tradition than the American one (although the beautiful 'Folk Roots, New Routes' alb w/Shirley Collins does contain some American tunes.) DG reminds me much more of Sandy Bull, the American acoustic guitarist who recorded some pretty 'out' folk/psych recs in the mid-late 60s. You can see DG performing in 'The Servant', btw.

Biggest minus point - DG's singing generally just ok.

I don't own any of Davey Graham solo records, but the Shirley Collins collaboration is tremendously beautiful, albeit more because of her stunning voice than anything else.

Davy Graham - The Guitar Player is great but that's all I've heard.

I have Midnight Man on vinyl (£3.99 @ Oxfam thank you very much - I thought those days were over!) and it's sweet as anything. The one specifically Eastern raga-type track is totally amazing, I wish there was a full album of this kind of thing. It's like a more concise, poppy Sandy Bull, Bert Jansch if he'd been on the right drugs. The first three (?) have recently been reissued but I haven't been able to find them anywhere.

For some reason I've never swung for the Shirley Collins collab' like I probably should have done. It's nice n' all, but it always seemed like a slightly weird mix to me, the looseness and swagger of his pickin' compared to the crystalline purity of her voice. I think I enjoy them more individually. But DG was onto something for sure. Byron Coley wrote a nice piece on the reissues in the Wire a few months back.

Yeah, but I'm not buying them off of Keenan unless I have to! He's got his finger in every fckn' pie, hasn't he? But thank you for your assistance, my good man.

Ya, Davey's performance in The Servant is really good. He's a good blues singer.

oh I guess it wasn't that brief. Anyway he is kind of washed out in the background. Love his voice.
