The John Peel Record Box poll - 142 singles from the box!

Some of you may well remember being a part of trying to compile all these into a set of mp3's as a tribute and as some sort of exercise in collecting a wide range of this sort of thing. It sort of reminded me, when I got the recent John Peel Sessions book, which not only lists every band who ever recorded a session, with tracks and lineups, dates, producers, etc, but also manages to list every john peel radio show ever!

So here are those 142 singles once more. Hey, pick one! One you like best, one you wish you had, whatever.

(Some numbers are missing, there were multiple copies of some singles and that's why)

'lonely saturday night' or 'i can hear the grass grow'.

saxomophone, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 16:56 (eighteen years ago)

Some Chicken!

That's one of the only ones I actually own (the others being Mighty Avengers & Pocket Fishrmen)

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 17:14 (eighteen years ago)

i think the only ones i own i own because i bought them for the peel box project. keep meaning to pick up the dandelion box set though, which has 5 of them in.

still occasionally search the web for the 5 tracks we are missing. never find anything though. hint for new bands: don't name yourself after a john denver record.

koogs, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 18:22 (eighteen years ago)

xl capris is tempting but it's gotta be 'path through the forest'

electricsound, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 22:24 (eighteen years ago)

when I got the recent John Peel Sessions book, which not only lists every band who ever recorded a session, with tracks and lineups, dates, producers, etc, but also manages to list every john peel radio show ever!

gosh !
i have the fascinating Festive Fifty book by Mark Whitby, but never knew of that one.
thats one a helluva undertaking i bet ..

mark e, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 22:29 (eighteen years ago)

Heh, I just got that Peel Sessions book as a late Xmas present. Yum.

I'm voting for The Users, who were the first band I ever saw play live (discounting the earlier Cherry Vanilla & The Police soundcheck on the same night), and whose record label was run out of my local record shop. None of which would matter if the single wasn't Classic Classic Classic.

11. boards of canada - aquarius + chinook (skam) 0
60. max romeo - sipple out deh' lee perry + revelation (upsetter) 0

I was too indecisive to vote, but no votes for these? Really? (The other two I was tempted by have a vote each, so well done them, I guess)

Ooh, Look!

It's funny, there are two singles on this box that has completely eluded any searches.

One is Sipho Bhengu's "Tickey Dopies", and the other is Dreamland Express' "Groovy"

The latter is an emidisc test pressing (I Think), and as such there is no other reference to it anywhere, so is impossible to get.

The other has managed to be extracted from a radio play from a tape that was clearly running slow at the time of recording, so now is sped up (JPeel sounds about 14 on his intro)

Any road up, I just managed to get a download of an album that has perfect quality versions of "Tickey Dopies" and it's b-side! "I Saluti"

As I say, I don't suppose anyone's still holding out for these tracks, but let me know if you are....

Mark G, Thursday, 7 August 2014 00:20 (eleven years ago)

no?

Yes.

Mark G, Thursday, 7 August 2014 08:06 (eleven years ago)

I might actually get around to making the CD box set of these.

Mark G, Thursday, 7 August 2014 12:08 (eleven years ago)

This was a strange old poll... one of yours, Mark?

We cry crows craws (Tom D.), Thursday, 7 August 2014 12:48 (eleven years ago)

Always happy to see "Pocket Fishrmen" on the list. Weird old Austin.

Liquid Plejades, Thursday, 7 August 2014 12:50 (eleven years ago)

Yeah, the old days of 'more than fifty voting options,

Mark G, Thursday, 7 August 2014 15:09 (eleven years ago)

i still have my folder of these mp3s and would be thrilled to add tickie dopies and its b-side!

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 7 August 2014 16:56 (eleven years ago)

pm me obv

Mark G, Thursday, 7 August 2014 16:59 (eleven years ago)

The Pocket Fishrmen track is one of the best things here. Still remember hearing Peel playing it for the first time and how blown away he was by it.

everything, Thursday, 7 August 2014 18:30 (eleven years ago)

two months pass...

I stomped off: I had the "Tickey Dopies" but all of the other singles had been zapped as my old desktop crashed and burned.

Happily, I have now found the backup disc I took of the "Peel 140", so I can do that box set after all...

(I guess we will never know about "Dreamland Express", will we?)

Mark G, Tuesday, 7 October 2014 13:03 (eleven years ago)

.. and then I found this:

More info about the very record, here.

Karel Fialka. One of those names that would pop up every so often with a one-off hit.

Anyway, read on, in.

three years pass...

So, assuming it’s unlikely we will ever find that Dreamland Express single, it might be possible if someone knows Karel Fialka well enough to get the tracks..

Anyway, in other news, I managed to get a copy of The Nice “Thoughts of Emmerlist Davjack” promo, which has John Peel doing intros and stuff. All we had so far was a brief play off the radio where John and other people talk over it and fade it halfway through.

Mark G, Friday, 22 October 2021 07:40 (four years ago)

I really should update the Wikipedia page for this, lots of wrongness on it…

Mark G, Friday, 22 October 2021 07:41 (four years ago)

three years pass...

And today, managed to get Lee Perry "Baffling Smoke Signals" on original 7"

Quite timely

Mark G, Tuesday, 22 April 2025 16:46 (nine months ago)

Like 16 of these being Jack White is kinda wild
