Why are critics so fascinated with artists that sneak "naughty" references into pop records?

there's always been a fascination with that, since like Louie Louie or old school Chuck Berry stuff and that..this xgau thing made me think of it (I guess "superman" from Crank Dat Soulja Boy is one of those dirty sanchez sick deals or whatever but fuck if i'm looking it up at work)

Boy do the haters get busy on this 16-year-old. But scrutinize the "superman" matter (look it up) and you'll see that even if he thought he was sneaking something outlandishly filthy onto a pop record, his fans thought he was inventing a dance that involved flying, thus furthering the presumption of innocence so crucial to his cute. Unlike his crunk forebears, he's not into pimping or dealing or even strip clubs -- "Booty Meat" is as explicit as his carnality gets, and not only is he looking not touching, he's hoping an amateur will "turn around just like a pro." He's still boy enough to worry about those F's, and the most winning of his many winning songs was written to, and on, his Sidekick 3. There are enough sonic strokes here to keep the wrong bizzer in ringtone rappers for a year. But Soulja Boy's spiritual secret is that with less subcultural support than, say, Be Your Own Pet, he's reached the top of his world on a few tips from ex-partner Young Kwon and the loyalty of human sidekick Arab. You can hear how tickled he is about it.

but anyway, you see this kinda stuff all the time, and it's sort of weird in a way-- does it make the song BETTER? more fun to listen to once you look up and find the cheeky monkey stuff?

i dunno...i just think it's sort of weird because if someone did a review where they were like "Oh I love all the great messages of Joan Baez or Michael Franti" it would seem like dude is some lame-O square rockist piece of shit, but doing this kind of stuff -- which is lyrical meaning stuff really in the same way -- is seen as kinda cool and good rock crit (in the ilm sense whatever that means)

because if it was treated as normal then rock and roll would die

Trinidad's music pirates of the Caribbean
By Robert Plummer
Business reporter, BBC News

As the latest soca music blares out from huge speakers at popular Trinidad nightspot Smokey and Bunty's, one song stands out more than most.

It begins with a voice saying: "Hello Suzy, I have your $100 phone card here for you."

Then it launches into an unlikely tale of a man being pursued by a woman who only wants him because he can afford to subsidise her mobile phone habit.

Phone Card, by veteran performer Crazy, is one of the most controversial new tunes in the run-up to next month's Trinidad and Tobago carnival, because of the double meaning in its lyrics.

The Trini tendency to pronounce the word "for" as "fuh" means that the song's seemingly innocent refrain, "She only want me fuh card", ends up sounding blatantly sexual.

Why are critics so fascinated with showing you how hip to da youth lingo they are?

On a now deleted wiki page:

It means soulja boy is having sex with a girl. crank it means hes going to cum all over the girls back roll it means the girl rolls over and the sheets of the bed get wet--so it looks like a cape super man, because it refers as the wet sheets as a cape I wonder if he knows that, esspecially when there is little kids in his video

I don't know if critics are necessarily always impressed by this kind of thing, unless "My Ding A Ling" and the entire oeuvre of AC/DC are more universally revered than I realized.

It's subversive, and subversiveness means a win for the counter-culture and Mr. Mencken and one less day for the fundamentalists to live.

Following on Alex in Baltimore's comment: because most people who continue to listen to pop music past the age of 18 have a juvenile fascination with the puerile? (Note: I include myself in that category, and don't mean to demean said fascination.)

Euler, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 17:41 (eighteen years ago)

i think it's more like a puerile fascination with the juvenile.

cf my professor who once did a running commentary of 'psycho', pointing out all the instances of "shit" and "feces" references in the film, b/c the whole film was just about "poo".

This infuriates me.

The "superman" is such a passive-aggressive act that it's more likely to be seen in an emo song than a rap song. There's no fucking way that Soulja Boy is talking about "the superman" and anyone who thinks so is projecting.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 18:15 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, but there's just no way "supersoak that ho" isn't a bukkake reference.

Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 18:17 (eighteen years ago)

watch me superman dat hoe

xpost
I think it's certainly about ejaculation, but not bukkake per se.

i learned about this by accidently clicking on a noise thread made by ethan. i am so naive.
