When he DJs Peter Hook just plays a pre-mixed entire CD created by someone else.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m01g4XnC_qU
He doesn't touch the decks the entire time, he simply fiddles with a knob on the mixer. In this clip he is playing a CD off the cover of Mixmag. On another clip on Youtube you can hear a Mixmag jingle off the CD.
Is this OK? Are people paying to see Peter Hook and so it doesn't matter that he's playing someone else's mix cd? Or is he a fat lazy old thieving fuck who needs to retire and stop crapping all over his legacy just to earn a few extra quid for that new set of golf clubs?

hahahah this is pretty funny. i remember a famous DJ who showed up in montreal, claimed to have "forgotten his records," and mimed along to mix cds all night.
but a mixmag cover cd... that takes the cake.

― Noodle Vague, Thursday, 10 January 2008 18:22 (eighteen years ago)
I may be wrong, but the time I DJ'd with him I'm pretty sure he was putting CDs in and out and fading from one to another, i.e., djing.
― dan selzer, Thursday, 10 January 2008 19:05 (eighteen years ago)
yeah i mean plenty of folks use the CDJ things. this is a bit fishy though as he's not even wearing headphones or doing anything except maybe tweaking a few EQ knobs and an effects knob. doesn't seem like he's actually "mixing" anything, but whatever.
he looks like he's trying to sell it pretty hard, though!

That thing where he kind of tries to... heel kick his own arse is amazing. If you mute the video then play something else over it then, occasionally, his best moves will sync with what you play and you can cheer him on.

Since 2002, Peter Hook has begun doing DJ sets, though numerous videos recorded of him live show him doing nothing more than playing a free CD included in Mixmag[2].

if anyone pays good money to see hooky DJ under the impression that he can actually DJ, as opposed to, y'know, slap a mix CD on and gurn a lot, they're an arse.
you go because it's hooky and he'll maybe play some good stuff. although i couldn't be arsed when he came to glasgow, right enough.

I see that Bonehead from Oasis is also on the decks, though can't tell if he's a faker or a shakermaker in this clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tD8Z1VjE95s
― Billy Dods, Friday, 11 January 2008 11:28 (eighteen years ago)
Hahaha, I like, in the Hong Kong one with the mixmag jingle, how he puts on the headphones, cues the CDJ, takes off the headphones, does nothing else. That's celebrity DJ's for you though, unfortunately nothing surprising, but hey could at least not insult his audience and not play it off as such.
― mehlt, Friday, 11 January 2008 16:04 (eighteen years ago)
i like how he gets a bit worn out by his patented 'running on the spot' move and puts his hands on his hips/big belly and gasps for air, then like a trooper he lifts his arms out to the side, does a cocaine sneer to his fans and starts all over again.
― s.rose, Friday, 11 January 2008 16:51 (eighteen years ago)
Well the thing that sticks out in my mind about when I saw him was the way he kept turning the see-through pages of his big "book" of CD's (I guess some call it a 'wallet' I don't know what to call it I've never wanted one). He did it with such rock and roll abandon, flipping these pages dramatically like a drunk person throwing a glass, I guess. And yes, he did appear to be taking CD's out of it and putting them in the player and putting them back in the wallet afterwards.
But really if the guy just wants to get out there and dance with the fans to some good music, who gives a shite? It's not his fault the other members of New Order can't get their shit together to tour, or that the three of them can't manage to patch up their differences.

when did MIXMAG cds have bits saying 'MIXMAG' on them? they don't anymore. did they ever? i guess maybe they used to in the days of home-taping-is-illegal pre-web etc. why on earth he'd play a mixmag cd is anyone's guess when there are a million and one mix cds out there. which one is it can anyone say?
― pisces, Monday, 14 January 2008 13:52 (eighteen years ago)
Which Mixmag CD is it he's allegedly playing?

What a fool.
― Mr. Goodman, Monday, 14 January 2008 15:21 (eighteen years ago)
... but it made me laugh!
i also would like an answer to Matt DC's question. if someone is trainspottery enough to know the Mixmag CD jingle they'll know which disc it is? or is it just a case of Hooky ripping a track from a Mixmag CD and being too lazy to edit the jingle out?
― Tracer Hand, Monday, 14 January 2008 16:00 (eighteen years ago)
yeah like i said these videos aren't incriminating because you never hear the mix go from one track to the next, so he could just be playing tracks that happen to be on a mixmag cd.
the first one jumps around and you hear a few different tracks. my guess is this whole thing started because some spotter recognized those tracks as being on a mixmag cd.
― gr8080, Monday, 14 January 2008 18:25 (eighteen years ago)
he also could be using a mixmag cd to play a single track he doesn't have elsewhere, which while being kind of tacky for a dj who makes what he does in booking fees, doesn't make him a fraud by any means.

― Mr. Goodman, Monday, 14 January 2008 19:04 (eighteen years ago)
you don't hit the fader until you bring the next track in
what i'm saying is none of these clips show him going from one track to the next

Couldn't just bill these Celebrity DJ FRAUDS as professional dancers, whatever price you pay to see Peter Hook DJ would be well worth it, case closed (of course you'd still have to put up listening to a mixmag cd :S )
― mehlt, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 07:12 (eighteen years ago)
I've accumulated a few Mixmag CDs over the years. To the best of my recollection, none of them have included identifying jingles. Maybe it was a Mixmag-sponsored event, and they were dropping in jingles to that effect on the night?
― mike t-diva, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 10:08 (eighteen years ago)
OK now look.
How many "Celeb DJ" Star attractions bring their discs, mix the music, choose what they play, etc?
I remember back in the day (1979, prob) the some DJ telling me inamongst the moans that "and of course, you work all night for £xx, whereas they get some radio 1 DJ to come along, take the credit and HE gets £xxxx."
i.e. it's more an anomaly when the famous dude actually does the work (e.g. Boy George, etc)
― Mark G, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 10:17 (eighteen years ago)
It is Peter Hook, who gives a shit? He gets paid not for his DJing prowess but for the very fact that he is Peter Hook and will get a load of people through the door regardless of what he plays. It's not like Ricardo Villalobos coming along and whacking on a Mixmag CD from five years ago he found on Bittorrent.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 10:47 (eighteen years ago)

The only night I ever saw Peter Hook DJ I was arrested at 4am for public urination by the NYPD so I have to say DUD.
("Did you just urinate on that tree, sir?" Thinking back.. slowly dawning.. "Yes.")
― Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 12:14 (eighteen years ago)
And yes I did get arrested. They gave me a f*cking summons for peeing on a tree at 4am when all the clubs had shut.

Yeah Dan you were great as usual! I apologize for talking shouting an insane amount of nonsense into your ear all night, it was one of those nights where the free booze fairy had come to call and you find yourself still moving your hips and talking to strangers after the music has stopped and the lights are turned on.

My feeling is that, if he's not going to do much, I'd rather hear him play 2 hours of unmixed songs (in a blunt stop / start style) that he's chosen, rather than appear to be mixing shit tracks...
Then again, I've never had any inclination to go to one of these celebrity DJ things...most musicians I admire have kind of shit taste in music...

Should go here...
Ah what a strange world we live in! this expose has appeared on An Australian website exposing me for the charlatan I am{sorry tim!} funny really its never the content that causes the damage, its like the PETER HOOK BLAMES BAND MATES FOR SPLIT! Headlines when you read the article I never did!
On this one PETER HOOK FAKE DJING EXPOSED! It shows a clip on YOU TUBE so out of context
,as they always are! The night was great the crowd was rocking ,why don't they show that instead of me? The most boring part? Im messing with the eq. on the desk , as taught to me by the great Arthur Baker, to emphasise rolls hand claps effects etc, then you sneak the bottom end out then bring it back in suddenly for added frisson.Shit he will kill me for telling you!
Funny really in the early days when people used to have to put the tracks on for me I didn't get exposed but now I do it myself? I get exposed, what a shock tho ,some djs play pre-recorded music???? My mate did the lights for a very famous English DJ, he was doing a three month tour of america and mimed to a 100,000 people a night! Just used a dat tape and just pretended to put the records on. Naughty boy! In my early days I would have chunks recorded max 11minutes now I do it myself I don't wear headphones cos I don't mix a lot! I edit the songs to start on the beat because I prefer it that way. I suspect that theres a little bit of bad blood goin down in OZ , I had a great time in PARKLIFE and had no complaints at all? But I had to pull another festival later, because id stupidly double booked it, my fault no one else's. I cancelled 5 months in advance but was amazed by the response as in you'll never play this town again to my mate works in Immigration your stuffed etc etc …………SO JACKT What you up to? Im flattered you think im important enough to expose, im sure we 'll bump into each other sometime, so I can explain ! In the meantime you've lost me 4 gigs, ah well at least it'll bring FREEBASS nearer! Love hookyx Have a watch!
Oh, thanks for the watch!

some good comments in the reaction that blog btw. including this gem from longlost longtimeloser ex-singer of wonderstuff:
<i>I've often pondered the intellect of people who take watching other people play records quite so seriously. Looking at the comments left on inthemix.com I am left feeling ever more perplexed. ― s.rose, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 10:56 (eighteen years ago)
I don't care in the least what Peter Hook does while DJing but he seems to be trying to imply he assembled a mix of his own lovingly hand-crafted disco edits at home that afternoon, rather than just stuck on a Pete Tong cover CD off the front of some two-year-old Mixmag. Unless the audio on that youtube isn't the actual audio at all, which I suppose is possible, but if so he'd have said so angrily in his blog, right? (or he just happens to have the same first three tracks and Mixmag jingles as that Tong mix)
(ok, I'm just posting because nobody noticed my sad loser trainspotting last time)
