Killing Joke made it on this list!

Jeff Treppel, Friday, 11 January 2008 01:34 (eighteen years ago)

i own like 40 of these. i adore a ton of them. i didn't even hesitate: in the nightside eclipse.

and that's OVER take as needed for pain and white light from the mouth of infinity, which are two of my favorite albums EVER. And over Entombed! and storm of the light's bane!!!!! but i can't deny emperor their due.

scott seward, Friday, 11 January 2008 01:37 (eighteen years ago)

Killing Joke made it on this list!

And Depeche Mode for Geir!

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 11 January 2008 01:40 (eighteen years ago)

I'm torn between the two Kyuss albums. So many good albums on there but it has to be one of those.

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 11 January 2008 01:42 (eighteen years ago)

Tricky. I love Dirt and Chaos AD, though I'm tempted to say "You had me at Necrotism".

chap, Friday, 11 January 2008 01:44 (eighteen years ago)

it's just so wrong to vote against brave murder day for any reason. this thread is evil.

scott seward, Friday, 11 January 2008 02:29 (eighteen years ago)

Too many choices. Brain shutting down.

Jeff Treppel, Friday, 11 January 2008 02:35 (eighteen years ago)

haha if slint wins this poll there will be TURMOIL IN HADES

Just got offed, Friday, 11 January 2008 02:35 (eighteen years ago)

*votes for Through Silver In Blood*

Just got offed, Friday, 11 January 2008 02:37 (eighteen years ago)

Too little too late.

Alex in NYC, Friday, 11 January 2008 02:59 (eighteen years ago)

Pretty good list actually, but...Alternative 4?????

Anyway, voted Burzum.

Siegbran, Friday, 11 January 2008 07:35 (eighteen years ago)

lots and lots of goodnesses here, but angel dust takes the prize.

m the g, Friday, 11 January 2008 09:48 (eighteen years ago)

So you're asking us to pick the BEST and not the most influential/important one, right?

StanM, Friday, 11 January 2008 09:54 (eighteen years ago)

Yes

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 11 January 2008 10:33 (eighteen years ago)

lots and lots of goodnesses here, but angel dust takes the prize.

Gah, I didn't even notice Angel Dust. This doesn't make things any easier.

chap, Friday, 11 January 2008 12:54 (eighteen years ago)

Play them all then decide.

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 11 January 2008 14:26 (eighteen years ago)

Voted for Cynic, but there's way too many choices.

Marty Innerlogic, Friday, 11 January 2008 14:40 (eighteen years ago)

"Nevermind" may deserve a vote. The rest largely don't

Geir Hongro, Friday, 11 January 2008 15:15 (eighteen years ago)

mmm, the ninetees were a good decade for metal weren't they?

saxomophone, Friday, 11 January 2008 15:22 (eighteen years ago)

Really difficult to pick one, so I'll just post something pedantic instead:
Naked City came out in 1989.

Colonel Poo, Friday, 11 January 2008 15:28 (eighteen years ago)

wrong, sir.

naked city's debut came out in 1989. torture garden was 1991.

m the g, Friday, 11 January 2008 16:02 (eighteen years ago)

actually, maybe not. earache is divided on the subject.

m the g, Friday, 11 January 2008 16:04 (eighteen years ago)

Well AMG & Discogs.com list it as 1989. I thought it was 1989. Dunno then.

Colonel Poo, Friday, 11 January 2008 16:05 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not sure neither. I always thought 91. earache list both dates depending on where you look. probably a pre-black box reissue thing. my apologies.

m the g, Friday, 11 January 2008 16:10 (eighteen years ago)

I thought Geir would've voted Depeche Mode

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 11 January 2008 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

"Nevermind" may deserve a vote. The rest largely don't

and how many of 'the rest' have you heard?

m the g, Friday, 11 January 2008 16:33 (eighteen years ago)

What's the worst band up there? I'm going for Type O Negative of the ones I've heard.

chap, Friday, 11 January 2008 16:36 (eighteen years ago)

Wouldn't Geir quite like Dirt? It's more melodically complex than Nevermind.

chap, Friday, 11 January 2008 16:37 (eighteen years ago)

xpost: type O? that sounds about right.

m the g, Friday, 11 January 2008 16:38 (eighteen years ago)

Cradle of Filth. Even Pantera had slightly more merit ,unfortunately they also had Phil Anselmo.

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 11 January 2008 16:38 (eighteen years ago)

uuurrrruggghhh... this is tough

ok: A Blaze In The Northern Sky

The Macallan 18 Year, Friday, 11 January 2008 17:12 (eighteen years ago)

Cradle of Filth have reasonable comedy value. Vulgar Display of Power is a fucking incredible album, ubertwat of a frontman notwithstanding.

chap, Friday, 11 January 2008 19:12 (eighteen years ago)

Cradle of Filth are really good at what they do. Whether or not you like what they do is another thing entirely. You could say the same about Pantera and Type O Negative. maybe not sui generis, but they all created their own distinct universes.

scott seward, Friday, 11 January 2008 19:48 (eighteen years ago)

I just cant take cof seriously at all. If they didn't take themselves so seriously it wouldn't be so bad.

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 11 January 2008 20:34 (eighteen years ago)

I once saw a photoshoot of them in some metal magazine, the theme of which was 'Cradle of Filth about the house', Dani doing the washing up in marigolds and corpse paint, etc. That was pretty funny.

chap, Friday, 11 January 2008 20:48 (eighteen years ago)

There was a few fans round here around the same age as I and they thought they were really hard walking around wearing cof shirts. They used to slag off loads of things as "false metal". I wonder if they're still into cof or embarrassed about ever liking them.

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 11 January 2008 22:33 (eighteen years ago)

That nun tshirt stuff was embarrassing too. Tower Records in Glasgow got raided because they sold that.

Herman G. Neuname, Saturday, 12 January 2008 00:45 (eighteen years ago)

That list is full of win!

rogermexico., Saturday, 12 January 2008 01:18 (eighteen years ago)

It is indeed! I'm still very torn.

chap, Saturday, 12 January 2008 03:20 (eighteen years ago)

Wait, no Downward Spiral!

chap, Saturday, 12 January 2008 03:41 (eighteen years ago)

it's gotta Swans something-or-other

stephen, Saturday, 12 January 2008 03:45 (eighteen years ago)

* gotta be

stephen, Saturday, 12 January 2008 03:45 (eighteen years ago)

90% of these cds just made me shoot my wad

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Saturday, 12 January 2008 04:10 (eighteen years ago)

Sigh's Hail Horror Hail has gotta bein the top 5.

haven't listened to it in years, but it's one of those albums you don't forget easily....funny though for how eclectic the album is, my favorite bits are still the traditional 80s metal bits

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Saturday, 12 January 2008 04:12 (eighteen years ago)

How am I supposed to choose between Kokosofen and Possession? NO FAIR.

aldo, Saturday, 12 January 2008 10:03 (eighteen years ago)

Is every album going to get 1 vote each then?

Herman G. Neuname, Saturday, 12 January 2008 12:07 (eighteen years ago)

I voted Blues For The Red Sun as that was such an important album for me.

Herman G. Neuname, Saturday, 12 January 2008 16:42 (eighteen years ago)

Went for Angel Dust in the end. It's the one I still listen to most.

chap, Saturday, 12 January 2008 16:46 (eighteen years ago)

Herman G. Neuname, Saturday, 12 January 2008 17:02 (eighteen years ago)

was Streetcleaner an 80's album?

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Saturday, 12 January 2008 17:06 (eighteen years ago)

Streetcleaner is here "Terrorizer" magazine's "Best Album Of The Eighties"

Herman G. Neuname, Saturday, 12 January 2008 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

guess that answers my question. lovethat album

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Saturday, 12 January 2008 17:14 (eighteen years ago)

It's a terrific album.

Herman G. Neuname, Saturday, 12 January 2008 18:08 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

Did you vote for it then, Bo?

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 00:35 (eighteen years ago)

dunno that it's my favorite in the list, but....

I wonder where my copy of it is....

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 00:41 (eighteen years ago)

I need to get Streetcleaner on vinyl.

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 11:44 (eighteen years ago)

this is one hell of a task. first of all, to narrow it down to the true contenders:

dirt, tales from the thousand lakes, slaughter of the soul, heartwork, violator (important and fantastic sure, but interesting to see it on such a list), storm of the light's bane, anthems to the welkin at dusk, in the nightside eclipse, angel dust, in on the kill taker (but what's it doing here?...oh well), ritual de lo habitual, blues for the red sun, rust in peace, turn loose the swans, through silver in blood, orchid (though it certainly isn't the best opeth record of the 90s by a longshot), the shape of punk to come, spiderland, white light from the mouth of infinity

and to narrow it down even further:

dirt, violator, storm of the light's bane, in the nightside eclipse, angel dust, in on the kill taker, rust in peace, turn loose the swans, the shape of punk to come, spiderland

even further (damn this is tough):

dirt, in the nightside eclipse, in on the kill taker, rust in peace, spiderland

oh shit, i'm gonna have to give this to alice in chains or slint, particularly since that's about my 4th favourite fugazi record (still amazing, however). not often i'd vote against RIP either, and in the nightside... is pretty much the quintessential black metal album (though i ultimately prefer ulver's 'nattens madrigal')

um, slint. sorry to do all this and come up with something so predictable, but there you have it. one of my favourite records ever.

Charlie Howard, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

In terms of actual 'importance' rather than just 'goodness', surely the Black Album is a heavyweight contender for the top spot. It was unquestionably instrumental in the development of metal throughout the decade, though it contributed to a direction in the genre that many people dislike.

chap, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 16:26 (eighteen years ago)

It was instrumental in the development thru to St Anger. So it doesn't deserve any votes!

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 17:04 (eighteen years ago)

um, slint. sorry to do all this and come up with something so predictable

I've heard about 50 of these and voted Spiderland with no shame or hesitation. No Immo.

xox, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 21:42 (eighteen years ago)

Slint making a late run for the winning line

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 23:35 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

No Killing Joke votes?

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 00:09 (eighteen years ago)

ew

roxymuzak, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 00:09 (eighteen years ago)

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 00:15 (eighteen years ago)

Strange results.

chap, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 00:29 (eighteen years ago)

Roxy otm.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 00:51 (eighteen years ago)

Not as strange as Primus winning the 80s poll

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 13:00 (eighteen years ago)

Lots of great albums in joint 2nd place

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 16:56 (eighteen years ago)

I wonder why alex didn't vote Killing Joke

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 18 January 2008 11:08 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe he's not on poll patrol.

roxymuzak, Friday, 18 January 2008 16:20 (eighteen years ago)

He posted up above
