2003 was a big year for major acts that changed the face of rock radio...

HI DERE...

Hot Hot Heat
Franz Ferdinand
Bloc Party
The Coral
The Music
The Thrills
The Stills

Astonishingly, I've left off The Bravery b/c their recent single was a modest hit and showed signs of staying power. Who else am I missing? Where are they now?

I don't think it can really be claimed that The Stills or The Music changed the face of anything. Also Franz Ferdinand's debut came out in 2004 and Bloc Party's in 2005 but hey.

Matt DC, Sunday, 13 January 2008 19:12 (eighteen years ago)

Hot Hot Heat released one really solid album followed by two piles of crap.

Simon H., Sunday, 13 January 2008 19:14 (eighteen years ago)

Also Franz Ferdinand's debut came out in 2004 and Bloc Party's in 2005 but hey.

It all kind of blends together though, doesn't it? 2004 was really the year (HI DERE Livvertines); and "Banquet" was def. getting play before the end of the year.

HI DERE Maximo Park

J0rdan S., Sunday, 13 January 2008 21:46 (eighteen years ago)

if you included maximo park and the futureheads you'd have 2 more bands w/ great debuts

J0rdan S., Sunday, 13 January 2008 21:46 (eighteen years ago)

This is officially the low point of ILX.

Dom Passantino, Sunday, 13 January 2008 21:50 (eighteen years ago)

Actually it (Make Up the Breakdown) was Hot Hot Heat's second album. Their first had a hardcore-y singer.

Simon H., Sunday, 13 January 2008 21:58 (eighteen years ago)

This is officially the low point of ILX

J0rdan S., Sunday, 13 January 2008 22:14 (eighteen years ago)

Does Keane fall in this group or they merely a Snow Patrol auxiliary? Need to be lined up against the wall for their Cult cover anyway...

rogermexico., Sunday, 13 January 2008 22:41 (eighteen years ago)

yeah i wanna lump keane in here too for some reason. that was a great debut.

winston, Monday, 14 January 2008 02:13 (eighteen years ago)

Note that this is not necessarily a "great debuts" thread. Opinions are those of individual posters only.

As far as the OP's concerned this is the LOL 2003/2004 Teh Year Wat Changed EVERYTHING thread...

rogermexico., Monday, 14 January 2008 03:52 (eighteen years ago)

eh idk

J0rdan S., Monday, 14 January 2008 03:53 (eighteen years ago)

J0rdan S., Monday, 14 January 2008 03:54 (eighteen years ago)

rogermexico., Monday, 14 January 2008 04:18 (eighteen years ago)

rogermexico., Monday, 14 January 2008 04:19 (eighteen years ago)

If you can't see the influence of the Futureheads in every aspect of our cultural life (at least, that cultural life that represents us at our best) I don't know what to tell you.

The Music

In autumn 2004, they released their second album Welcome to the North (#8) and the accompanying single Freedom Fighters (#15), before touring with the band Incubus. In January 2005, a second single Breakin' reached #20. August 2005 saw the band play at the dual-venue V Festival. In late 2006 they played a few UK gigs and subsequently posted on their site the video new song entitled, Fire, which revealed both their latest sound as well as Harvey's new shaved head look. Their website also has a video of Kill 100 by X-Press 2 featuring Rob Harvey. This video seems to be hidden, but if you right click the video while Fire is playing and select play,Kill 100 plays. Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters is said to be a huge fan of the band, and after seeing them at the V Festival used their smash hit single "The People" as the last warm up track for all their gigs in 2005.

rogermexico., Monday, 14 January 2008 05:23 (eighteen years ago)

seriously though, whatever happened to corey haim?

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Monday, 14 January 2008 09:20 (eighteen years ago)

That bit where the dude from the Thrills goes 'ooh!' in the chorus to that song is still the worst musical moment of the 00s.

Matt DC, Monday, 14 January 2008 09:35 (eighteen years ago)

Why do people keep saying HI DERE?

I know, right?, Monday, 14 January 2008 12:18 (eighteen years ago)

Bands claiming to be influenced by the Gang Of Four: WAHT IS IT MADE?

rogermexico., Monday, 14 January 2008 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

Jesus fuck, that Hot Hot Heat album was the first one I remember as a music reviewer where I was like "Why does everyone but me love this album?"

Fucking boring then, fucking boring still. It's like seeing nostalgia for fucking Collective Soul or fucking Seven Mary Three.

I eat cannibals, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 01:38 (eighteen years ago)

Again I am confused. Where is this nostalgia of which you speak?

rogermexico., Tuesday, 15 January 2008 04:43 (eighteen years ago)

three weeks pass...

Bump for Louis XIV/Hot Hot Heat/Editors nostalgia tour lulz.

rogermexico., Sunday, 10 February 2008 05:54 (eighteen years ago)

[UNSEEN NARRATOR, OVER CLIP MONTAGE] the year was 2002, war was in the air, and a scrappy 4-piece from british columbia was teaching indie-rock kids to dance through their pain. ironically, their song "bandages" was pulled from some radio stations during the lead-up to war in iraq

[H.P MACAVOY, ROLLINGSTONE.COM] there was really this pent-up energy.
[LIL KIM] the hot who?
[SOME 40-YEAR-OLD ACTRESS KNOWN FOR PLAYING A HIP MOM ON A SITCOM] "bandages"! oh my god. i loved that song. how did it go? bandages on my arms and legs... sounded painful.
[CLIP SECZNICK, ALLTHEWORLDSABLOG] they were one of these bands that kind of came out of nowhere. and then went back.
[CARLOS MENCIA] what kind of name is that? HOT heat?
