The ghost of 'lectricity howls in the bones of her face 7
Oh, jewels and binoculars hang from the head of the mule 5
Ain't it just like the night to play tricks when you're tryin' to be so quiet? 3
He's sure got a lotta gall to be so useless and all 2
We sit here stranded, though we're all doin' our best to deny it 2
Now, little boy lost, he takes himself so seriously 1
But Mona Lisa musta had the highway blues, you can tell by the way she smiles 1
And Madonna, she still has not showed 1
Louise, she's all right, she's just near 1
We can hear the night watchman click his flashlight, ask himself if it's him or them that's really insane 1
Sayin', "Name me someone that's not a parasite and I'll go out and say a prayer for him" 1
In the empty lot where the ladies play blindman's bluff with the key chain 1
Hear the one with the mustache say, "Jeeze I can't find my knees" 1
But there's nothing, really nothing to turn off 1
On the back of the fish truck that loads While my conscience explodes 1
In this room the heat pipes just cough 1
The harmonicas play the skeleton keys and the rain 1
Voices echo this is what salvation must be like after a while 1
The peddler now speaks to the countess who's pretending to care for him 0
But these visions of Johanna, they make it all seem so cruel 0
But like Louise always says "Ya can't look at much, can ya man?" As she, herself, prepares for him 0
We see this empty cage now corrode 0
Where her cape of the stage once had flowed 0
The fiddler, he now steps to the road 0
He writes ev'rything's been returned which was owed 0
And these visions of Johanna are now all that remain0
When the jelly-faced women all sneeze 0
See the primitive wallflower freeze 0
Where these visions of Johanna have now taken my place 0
Lights flicker from the opposite loft 0
The country music station plays soft 0
Just Louise and her lover so entwined 0
And these visions of Johanna that conquer my mind 0
And the all-night girls they whisper of escapades out on the "D" train 0
She's delicate and seems like veneer 0
But she just makes it all too concise and too clear that Johanna's not here 0
He brags of his misery, he likes to live dangerously 0
And when bringing her name up he speaks of a farewell kiss to me 0
Muttering small talk at the wall while I'm in the hall 0
How can I explain? Oh, it's so hard to get on 0
And these visions of Johanna, they kept me up past the dawn 0
Inside the museums, Infinity goes up on trial 0
And Louise holds a handful of rain, temptin' you to defy it 0

Louise, she's all right, she's just near
She's delicate and seems like veneer

It's spelled "Wener" but yeah.

It's spelled "Wener" but yeah.

bobdylan dot com says it's "seems like the mirror".

kingkongvsgodzilla, Monday, 14 January 2008 12:43 (eighteen years ago)

"She seems like a Wiener"...sheesh.

"The ghost of 'lectricity howls in the bones of her face" is the coolest--even though I didn't notice it until my then boss/friend, Bobert, pointed it out back in '88 or so.

I always thought it was veneer, and it works, but you can hear him say mirror on live albums, and yeh, the publish lyric is mirror. Serves me right for not proof-checking, I guess.

Ghost of 'lectricity

Myonga Vön Bontee, Monday, 14 January 2008 23:08 (eighteen years ago)

That's what I voted for.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Monday, 14 January 2008 23:22 (eighteen years ago)

I opened this knowing I would vote for the Ghost and based on that I suppose I should... but the all-night girls are making it very very close...

rogermexico., Monday, 14 January 2008 23:29 (eighteen years ago)

i always thought it was a mispronunciation of Vermeer, the painter.

elan, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

Ha, I thought it was "the mere"! Which also works, as a proto-Meltzerian insult.

"We sit here stranded, though we're all doin' our best to deny it" is classic. How many songwriters would kill for a line like that? He just tosses it off in the second line to set the tone.

So now, what's going on in this song? Is Johanna an ex-lover, or dead, or just the one that got away?
