The Prince Single Poll

I could easily pick 20 songs, but I'll go with "Mountains" today.

I lol'd upon learning Prince's guitar is in the Smithsonian (along with an audio clip of "When Doves Cry")

For me, it's a tough choice between "Controversy", "Paisley Park", and "Sexy M.F.". I do love "When Doves Cry" too, but I think Prince's decision to include the electric guitar to that song makes it less than perfect. The rest of the song is such icy synth coolness, it would've been better without cliched a rock guitar solo. (And the keyboard solo in the full version is kinda useless too, if less distracting.)

Prince probably deserves a singles poll every six months or so, anyhow.

Actually, it looks like "Paisley Park" wasn't included in the previous poll, because it was only a single in the UK and Australia, so this poll gives all the people who love it (including me) a chance to vote for it.

"Around The World In a Day" was a patchy album, but those two were his best ever singles!

The B side to ARtWiaD is a bit patchy, but the A side is still ridiculously great - 5 wonderful songs in a row, all of which are among his best. "Condition of the Heart" is probably my favourite Prince ballad ever, so simple and pretty.

I don't like any of the ballads on that album.

The title track and "Pop Life" are great though.

Even doing a top 20 was hard for me. I had to leave off songs like "Automatic," "Uptown," and "If I Was Your Girlfriend," which I all love.

Yeah, this is probably the hardest poll ever for me too, I could easily vote for a dozen different songs.

This is impossible and I haven't heard a bunch of these but I went with "Let's Pretend We're Married" since it's awesome and it needs a vote.

I voted for "Erotic City" last time. I voted for "Kiss" this time.

the last couple of singles are quite awful.

7 - i always found a bit underwhelming too. i like how the chorus is so long - thats quite unusual but its quite leaden. its good when he does it live with just a guitar and nothing else, but then he plays a backing tape of his vocals for the chorus, which makes it all leaden again.

Can "F.U.N.K." be downloaded somewhere? Wikipedia says it's a download only single, but I can't find it anywhere.

Unless it's same tune as the one titled "PFunk" that someone posted here a while ago?

Black Sweat was great, but there were at least three tunes off that album that should have been singles before Fury.

I'll continue to day that "Chelsea Rodgers" is a great recent one as well. However, my vote today goes to "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man"

Really tough, but I'm going with "Alphabet Street" (although "My Name Is Prince" is still a strong contender).

I went for "Sexy M.F." in the end. I can't think of a funkier tune released in the 90s - when the trombone kicks in, the groove is just irresistible.

'Gett Off' at Number 4 is a erm... bold choice.

That stuck out for me too. Of the original poll, no votes for Purple Rain seems astonishing as it’s became such a standard since his death.
