The Prince Single Poll

I know there's a good chance "When Doves Cry" will win this poll too, but let's do it anyway. Because that's a ridiculously great row of singles the Purple One has released to this world during the last 30 years!

we haven't done this?

I could easily pick 20 songs, but I'll go with "Mountains" today.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 14 January 2008 18:16 (eighteen years ago)

I lol'd upon learning Prince's guitar is in the Smithsonian (along with an audio clip of "When Doves Cry")

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 14 January 2008 18:18 (eighteen years ago)

For me, it's a tough choice between "Controversy", "Paisley Park", and "Sexy M.F.". I do love "When Doves Cry" too, but I think Prince's decision to include the electric guitar to that song makes it less than perfect. The rest of the song is such icy synth coolness, it would've been better without cliched a rock guitar solo. (And the keyboard solo in the full version is kinda useless too, if less distracting.)

Tuomas, Monday, 14 January 2008 18:19 (eighteen years ago)

"cliched a" = "a cliched"

Tuomas, Monday, 14 January 2008 18:19 (eighteen years ago)

Best Prince single?

Ioannis, Monday, 14 January 2008 18:20 (eighteen years ago)

Whoops! I did do a search for "Prince single", I wonder why that thread didn't show up?

Tuomas, Monday, 14 January 2008 18:21 (eighteen years ago)

Still, went with "U Got the Look" this time out.

Ioannis, Monday, 14 January 2008 18:22 (eighteen years ago)

kiss vs doves cry ftw?

Jordan, Monday, 14 January 2008 18:23 (eighteen years ago)

Still, my list seems to have some singles The Reverend omitted, so maybe we can do this again?

Tuomas, Monday, 14 January 2008 18:25 (eighteen years ago)

my own weird personal top 10 at the moment, could vote for any of these:
"I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man"
"Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?"
"I Would Die 4 U" (with The Revolution)
"Pop Life" (with The Revolution)
"If I Was Your Girlfriend"
"Little Red Corvette"
"Controversy"
"Call My Name"
"The Morning Papers" (with The New Power Generation)
"Kiss" (with The Revolution)

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 14 January 2008 18:26 (eighteen years ago)

(No offence to The Reverend, I'm pretty sure few people will vote "The War".)

Tuomas, Monday, 14 January 2008 18:27 (eighteen years ago)

Prince probably deserves a singles poll every six months or so, anyhow.

Ioannis, Monday, 14 January 2008 18:31 (eighteen years ago)

Actually, it looks like "Paisley Park" wasn't included in the previous poll, because it was only a single in the UK and Australia, so this poll gives all the people who love it (including me) a chance to vote for it.

Tuomas, Monday, 14 January 2008 18:55 (eighteen years ago)

Little Red Corvette

kornrulez6969, Monday, 14 January 2008 18:58 (eighteen years ago)

"gett off"

r1o natsume, Monday, 14 January 2008 19:16 (eighteen years ago)

"Paisley Park". Just ahead of "Raspberry Beret".

"Around The World In a Day" was a patchy album, but those two were his best ever singles!

Geir Hongro, Monday, 14 January 2008 19:35 (eighteen years ago)

The B side to ARtWiaD is a bit patchy, but the A side is still ridiculously great - 5 wonderful songs in a row, all of which are among his best. "Condition of the Heart" is probably my favourite Prince ballad ever, so simple and pretty.

Tuomas, Monday, 14 January 2008 19:42 (eighteen years ago)

I don't like any of the ballads on that album.

The title track and "Pop Life" are great though.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 14 January 2008 19:55 (eighteen years ago)

Even doing a top 20 was hard for me. I had to leave off songs like "Automatic," "Uptown," and "If I Was Your Girlfriend," which I all love.

01. "Kiss"
02. "Let's Pretend We're Married"
03. "When Doves Cry"
04. "1999"
05. "Mountains"
06. "Anotherloverholenyohead"
07. "Do Me, Baby"
08. "Little Red Corvette"
09. "Alphabet St."
10. "Raspberry Beret"
11. "Girls & Boys"
12. "Sign o' the Times"
13. "Pop Life"
14. "7"
15. "Delirious"
16. "Let's Work"
17. "Controversy"
18. "I Wanna Be Your Lover"
19. "Let's Go Crazy"
20. "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man"

nicky lo-fi, Monday, 14 January 2008 20:04 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, this is probably the hardest poll ever for me too, I could easily vote for a dozen different songs.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 05:41 (eighteen years ago)

This is impossible and I haven't heard a bunch of these but I went with "Let's Pretend We're Married" since it's awesome and it needs a vote.

clotpoll, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 06:51 (eighteen years ago)

I voted for "Erotic City" last time. I voted for "Kiss" this time.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 06:53 (eighteen years ago)

I read this as "The Fresh Prince Single Poll" now there's an idea!

mehlt, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 06:58 (eighteen years ago)

Controversy!!!!!

Curt1s Stephens, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 08:42 (eighteen years ago)

"Little Red Corvette" video is cool.

nicky lo-fi, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 09:20 (eighteen years ago)

the last couple of singles are quite awful.

titchyschneiderMk2, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 11:55 (eighteen years ago)

7 - i always found a bit underwhelming too. i like how the chorus is so long - thats quite unusual but its quite leaden. its good when he does it live with just a guitar and nothing else, but then he plays a backing tape of his vocals for the chorus, which makes it all leaden again.

titchyschneiderMk2, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 11:56 (eighteen years ago)

Can "F.U.N.K." be downloaded somewhere? Wikipedia says it's a download only single, but I can't find it anywhere.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 11:58 (eighteen years ago)

Unless it's same tune as the one titled "PFunk" that someone posted here a while ago?

Tuomas, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 11:59 (eighteen years ago)

the last couple of singles are quite awful.

"Fury" is brilliant though.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 13:21 (eighteen years ago)

"Uptown".

xhuxk, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 13:27 (eighteen years ago)

Bump.

Tuomas, Thursday, 17 January 2008 06:49 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah Tuomas, same tune I think.

Jordan, Thursday, 17 January 2008 15:28 (eighteen years ago)

Black Sweat was great, but there were at least three tunes off that album that should have been singles before Fury.

Jordan, Thursday, 17 January 2008 15:30 (eighteen years ago)

I'll continue to day that "Chelsea Rodgers" is a great recent one as well. However, my vote today goes to "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man"

matt2, Thursday, 17 January 2008 17:28 (eighteen years ago)

Really tough, but I'm going with "Alphabet Street" (although "My Name Is Prince" is still a strong contender).

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 17 January 2008 18:55 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Sunday, 20 January 2008 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

I went for "Sexy M.F." in the end. I can't think of a funkier tune released in the 90s - when the trombone kicks in, the groove is just irresistible.

Tuomas, Sunday, 20 January 2008 13:46 (eighteen years ago)

To the "Posts very much in character" thread, Batman!

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 20 January 2008 13:48 (eighteen years ago)

Bit too many options, but with as many Prince as they are on ILM it'll probably work out without too much spread anyway.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 20 January 2008 13:52 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Monday, 21 January 2008 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah not too much spread there.

Noodle Vague, Monday, 21 January 2008 00:09 (eighteen years ago)

eleven years pass...

Prince's 50 greatest singles – ranked!

'Gett Off' at Number 4 is a erm... bold choice.

Portsmouth Bubblejet, Thursday, 12 September 2019 18:31 (six years ago)

That stuck out for me too. Of the original poll, no votes for Purple Rain seems astonishing as it’s became such a standard since his death.
