The soundtrack to Graffiti Bridge - is it worthy?

All these Prince threads reminded me, I spotted the Graffiti Bridge soundtrack for cheap in the used records bin in a local record store, and I was thinking whether I should buy it before someone else grabs it. What are people's opinion's on it - is it any good? Also, is it rock Prince or funk Prince, because I prefer the latter? Though if it's good rock Prince, I've nothing against that, but listening to snippets of the songs on AMG made it sound more like mediocre rock Prince.

theres a pretty good prince album in there, mostly made up of songs from 1986 (the original which are on bootlegs are generally better though). i like the tevin campbell song a lot too.

we can funk on GB is all time classic.

It's a great album because it's mostly rock Prince. If you prefer his funk side you will probably love his duet with George Clinton on "We Can Funk" though.

The fact that almost half of the songs are by other acts is no advantage, but those mostly aren't too bad either.

If you can get "We Can Funk," "Joy in Repetition" (one of my all-time Prince songs, simply uncategorizable), "Elephants & Flowers," and "Thieves..." someplace else, great. It's easy to find a used copy, though. Oh – I love "Round and Round" too.

Joy in Repetition is ace - the rest of it is highly dubious and the movie itself is an abortion

I really, really love this album. I've always felt weird for saying it, but I think it's got a spot in my top five Prince albums. Joy In Repetition might be my favorite Prince song, period.

Davey D, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 18:44 (eighteen years ago)

Worth it for the one - two combo of We Can Funk and Joy in Repetition alone. The latter in particular is astounding.

This album is great. Get it.

Unstoppable:

Talking 2 no one in particular, they say "the baddest I am tonight"
4 letter words are seldom heard with such dignity and bite.
All the poets and the part time singers always hang inside
live music from a band plays a song called "Soul Psychodelicide".
The song's a year long and had been playing 4 months when he
walked into the place.
No one seemed to care, an introverted this-is-it look on most of their faces.
Up on the mic repeating 2 words, over and over again
was this woman he had never noticed before he lost himself in the
articulated manner in which she said them.
These 2 words, a little bit behind the beat.
I mean just enough 2 turn u on.
4 everytime she said the words another one of his doubts were gone.

If you can get "We Can Funk," "Joy in Repetition" (one of my all-time Prince songs, simply uncategorizable), "Elephants & Flowers," and "Thieves..." someplace else, great.

But then, no "The Question Of U", which is one of his best ever songs!
Or "New Power Generation", another really great one!

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 23:25 (eighteen years ago)

I haven't heard it in years, but I used to love the Time's "Release It". That has been sampled a lot, yeah?

Mark Rich@rdson, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 02:49 (eighteen years ago)

"Joy in Repetition," "The Question of U," "Round and Round," and "We Can Funk" -- already this is pretty much better than almost any of his other 1990s albums.

Eric H., Wednesday, 16 January 2008 02:52 (eighteen years ago)

So I got this, and I agree that it's a fine album, though a bit weaker as the Symbol album of 1992. "We Can Funk" was kinda underwhelming to me (something about the synth sounds turns me off), but some of the other guest spots are wonderful: "Round an Round", "Release It", and especially "Melody Cool" which has a killer synth bass plus awesome vocals from Mavis Staples obviously. Too bad the two Prince-produced Mavis Staples albums are out of print, I'd love to hear them after this. And the Prince solo cuts are mostly good too, especially "Elephants and Flowers" and "Thieves in the Temple", which is almost as haunting and moody as "Sign o' the Times". And I like "Graffiti Bridge" too, I think Prince should've done more Hollywood musical style tunes for his movies.

I've actually owned this for years without ever listening to it. I'll put it on tonight, maybe.

piscesx, Tuesday, 18 February 2014 03:21 (twelve years ago)

It's not but the good songs mostly are.

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 18 February 2014 03:51 (twelve years ago)

I've been getting more into Prince lately but he seems to pretty clearly drop off around '89. I mean I dig the track on here that sounds like Bobby Brown's "My Prerogative" but otherwise...maybe I haven't listened to it closely enough though.

that Vanity 6 / Time / 1999 run in 1982 is incredible though
