two weeks pass...

listening to "i can't get no sleep"

what's a good comp/mix of their classic stuff?

one time, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 10:24 (eighteen years ago)

and/or name some tracks i should search.

one time, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 10:37 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, Business as Usual was great, but I got bored by Cargo.

I'll get my coat.

you can get most if not all of those mixes on Beatport. Morales Late Night mix is my fave.

one time, the 10th anniversary collection looks pretty solid

Nu-Yorican Soul album still golden too

blueski, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 14:24 (eighteen years ago)

all right, finally someone pays attention to this thread!

i like a great deal of their production work, but have very few of their own releases.

i think i shall check my bank statement today and see if i can get those track on beatport. but...i dunno, i sort of want them on vinyl?

anyway, love the Nu-Yorican Soul album. that's about all i got.

i recommend the following records by masters at work:

alright alright
dum dum cry

elan, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 18:23 (eighteen years ago)

best MAW track IMO: "Deep Inside" as Hardrive. i like a bunch of their shit though.

pipecock, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 18:29 (eighteen years ago)

they did hardrive? wow, that one is great.

elan, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 18:31 (eighteen years ago)

yeah "Deep Inside" is great. KenLou III "What A Sensation" is a good one, too.

one time, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 18:38 (eighteen years ago)

it might be louie by himself if you believe discogs:

http://www.discogs.com/artist/Hardrive

either which way, that track is the shiiiiiiiiiiiiiit. it samples a LLV production for the vocal, Barbara Tucker's "Beautiful People".

River Ocean "Love and Happiness" is awesome, so is Voices' "Voices in My Mind".

pipecock, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 18:38 (eighteen years ago)

all kenlou releases and the maw war 12" on their maw label (pretty solid a&r, 100+ releases) of course "everybody be somebody" as ruffneck featuring yavahn, "nights over egypt", most all nuyorican soul especially for me "you can do it (baby)" w/george benson, "to be in love", "brighter days", "mind fluid" & "the nervous track" on nervous, the disco-house era "odyssey", "casio's theme"... their version of "souffles h" by mondo grosso -I don't know how many of their tens of remixes.

possibly not a lot: do I even want to hear them fix marvin's "what's going on"? it sure ain't broke & is best left alone. electrocuting insufferable -if lucrative- pop with bumpin' latin jazz flavor doesn't redeem it either.

blunt, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:18 (eighteen years ago)

looove their mix of "helpless (i don't know what to do without you)" by urbanized

impudent harlot, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:19 (eighteen years ago)

The easy but totally correct answer: everything on this ...

http://www.discogs.com/release/25716

Part two is nearly as good, though less groundbreaking.

Eric H., Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:25 (eighteen years ago)

i didn't even know they did 'deep inside'! that is possibly one of my favorite tracks ever.

great.

the table is the table, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:28 (eighteen years ago)

dope's beats are dope. an old fave: "and there ain't" as dbx, which sounds not unlike an awake and technically proficient moodymann. or french house, sans fromage. and that "beau mot plage" edit of his was sweet. anyway 1990's jam the mace & the bucketheads should settle any doubts. earlier and louder than most.

blunt, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:30 (eighteen years ago)

vega carries the torch for any harmless/annoying noodling they've been (imo unjustly) accused of and he's released immediately classic latin ballads like "cerca de mi" that deserve single-digit chart positions- all the while his new label drops future underground classics like... echh, that's disgusting.

anyway, overall I prefer their respective productions and mixes.

blunt, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:32 (eighteen years ago)

Keep these suggestions coming folks. Other than the real standouts (I had the cassingle of "The Bomb" in high school), I'm unacceptably undereducated about these guys. A classic case of so much stuff making it hard to know where to dip the toe in.

matt2, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 21:24 (eighteen years ago)

can anyone vouch for the 3-disc strictly maw comp from last year? tracklist looks pretty sweet

r1o natsume, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 22:06 (eighteen years ago)

I posted this a long time ago on another thread:

ayayy the tito puente stuff is hittity-hot!

blunt, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 22:43 (eighteen years ago)

to my shame i only have one kenny dope record, although it's fantastic - "buggin on percussion" b/w "tribal dance"

dope, with no shame whatsoever, ripped the A-side wholesale for his remix of alex gopher's "the child"

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 23:06 (eighteen years ago)

his "strange games and funky things iii" mix/comp is a spectacular walk through 70s groove and soul

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 23:07 (eighteen years ago)

it always blows my mind to remember that he started out -- and continued for years -- by actually splicing magnetic tape and scotch-taping it together

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 23:08 (eighteen years ago)

There's some new indie dance group which has basically ripped off "The Bounce". It'll come to me in a bit...

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 23:30 (eighteen years ago)

Oh yeah, In Flagranti - "Paroli".

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 23:37 (eighteen years ago)

i could have that timeline wrong - kenny could have made that beat available to us AFTER "the child"

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 23:53 (eighteen years ago)

isn't every In Flagranti song a remix/edit/rip-off of another song?

got Little Louie Vega ft/Blaze "Elements Of Life" today. Haven't listened in full yet.

one time, Thursday, 31 January 2008 09:06 (eighteen years ago)

that is sort of InFlagranti's style. that said, i liked them the time i saw them live.
