Just noticed that ABBA Gold is flawed since "Under Attack" isn't on it. Best ABBA single IMO.

If that track were on there, I'd have no problems voting, but as it is I think this may be one of the most difficult polls yet.

the next grozart, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 20:36 (eighteen years ago)

my vote would have gone to "Under Attack" as well

Milton Parker, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 20:52 (eighteen years ago)

The Name Of The Game. End Of.

Billy Pilgrim, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 21:22 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I'm tempted by Name Of The Game, but I love Winner Takes It All as well. But then I'd be neglecting Super Trouper and SOS.

From this selection, "Does Your Mother Know" the chorus of which started life in the P.T. Barnum plain talking of "Dream World."

But of course ABBA Gold is flawed. There's no such thing as a perfect ABBA long-playing record. That's not what they're about. Their greatest song, the Gen X fight song "Bang-A-Boomerang," isn't even on the box. And a lot of their best stuff is simply not well-known enough to be included on a comp alongside the yucky likes of "I Have A Dream," "Chiquitita," and "Fernando" (well, the chorus is nice), and "One Of Us": "Angel Eyes" (they sing those "ahhs" before the verses as if they just cannot bear to recount what happened last night - positively tears my fucking heart out); the scandalous ""Medley: Pick A Bale Of Cotton-On Top Of Old Smokey-Midnight Special;" "Happy Hawaii" (who the fuck is Alice?); "Eagle" (they did Pink Floyd better than Pink Floyd); "As Good As New" (disco DJs should spin this more); "Hey Hey Helen" (if you're going to demonize working mothers, make sure your bullshit crunches like prime Sweet and hurts like the children asking for daddy); and so much more.

"Lay All Your Love On Me."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 23:08 (eighteen years ago)

Easily "Lay All Your Love On Me" - a pick that is probably more contrary outside ILM than here :)

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 23:15 (eighteen years ago)

Dancing Queen

Steve Shasta, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 23:17 (eighteen years ago)

"More ABBA Gold" is almost a stronger collection of songs, as that is where you find "Under Attack", "The Day Before You Came", "Head Over Heels" and "Cassandra". All of them among the very best ABBA songs.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 23:18 (eighteen years ago)

Dancing Queen

mentalist, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 23:58 (eighteen years ago)

God I really can't bear Dancing Queen, sorry.

the next grozart, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 01:31 (eighteen years ago)

Mamma Mia. In lieu of the Visitors.

"S.O.S." then, now and forever.

^^^

8. wins then because she's singing about her own divorce AS IT'S HAPPENING! She even looks like she's going to cry in the clip. She also look slike my mum; this gives me nightmares.

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 03:14 (eighteen years ago)

Dancing Queen rules all, but after that it's a reaaally tough choice. I think "Knowing Me Knowing You" comes in second, but unfortunately there are no seconds in ILM polls.

The ABBA Gold Second-Favourite Poll

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 06:25 (eighteen years ago)

Chiquitita always.

DavidM, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 12:27 (eighteen years ago)

No Day Before You Came, no cred.

Ah well, it'll have to be Thank You For The Music then.

Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 12:29 (eighteen years ago)

S.O.S.

Fitzcarraldo, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 14:09 (eighteen years ago)

It must be The Winner Takes It All. After accepting that her relationship is over, our protagonist then apologises to her ex for making him feel uncomfortable, what with him having to see how she's been destroyed by what's happened to her. If it weren't for the feeble "A big thing or a small" line, it would be perfect.

Ian Edmond, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 19:08 (eighteen years ago)

this is impossible

impudent harlot, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 19:12 (eighteen years ago)

Hmm very hard, but today I'd go with either "Voulez-vous" or "Winner Takes It All".

LeRooLeRoo, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 22:44 (eighteen years ago)

It is impossible. I voted for something, but I can't even remember what.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 22:49 (eighteen years ago)

Oh yeah, Mamma Mia.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 22:49 (eighteen years ago)

How could I forget you?

James Redd and the Blecchs, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 22:51 (eighteen years ago)

Where's the love for "Fernando"?

daavid, Thursday, 17 January 2008 05:14 (eighteen years ago)

super trouper today, probably mamma mia tomorrow

t0dd swiss, Thursday, 17 January 2008 06:19 (eighteen years ago)

"Knowing Me, Knowing You" ahead of "Waterloo"

Euler, Thursday, 17 January 2008 22:39 (eighteen years ago)

Take A Chance on me 0??? I voted that!

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 20 January 2008 00:18 (eighteen years ago)

One Of Us is best on ABBA Gold album I voted.

grebtesthit, Sunday, 20 January 2008 00:22 (eighteen years ago)

What's with the blasé attitude towards "Does Your Mother Know???"

Kevin John Bozelka, Sunday, 20 January 2008 00:24 (eighteen years ago)

and for that matter, Super Trouper?

the next grozart, Sunday, 20 January 2008 05:10 (eighteen years ago)

If I had followed one path and cast my vote for "Super Trouper" instead of "Mamma Mia" they would have swapped places in the poll.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Sunday, 20 January 2008 05:14 (eighteen years ago)

six months pass...

Shocked nobody voted for Take a Chance on Me.

I know, right?, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 11:25 (seventeen years ago)

or I have a dream, those are two of my absolute favourites. The final time she sings "I believe- in angels" is amazing.

I know, right?, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 11:35 (seventeen years ago)

"Fernando" deserved better too. But I guess it's hard to pick just one.
