There is a lot to LOL about in this magazine.

"Wah-Wah-Oo! Tear down that YES poster and start up a bad zine--there's this thing called punk!" (Carbonas review)

"Barry Bonds didn't cheat. Neither did Marion Jones. Unless you consider every American on prescription Pfizer profit-maker a cheater. If you took steroids would you run as Marion? Hit as many home runs as Barry? You bet your prozac you wouldn't. That takes skill and talent and training. That's there, drugs or not." (Graham Booth's column)

"I do have a Facebook but Rupert Murdoch owns Myspace" (Rob from OBSTRUCTION.)

i have a carbonas 7 inch it's pretty good. but yeah MRR has always been funny, i find it kinda loveable when i see it every once in awhile, rock keeps getting older but MRR stays the same age

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 23:44 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not dissin the carbonas at all! I think their records are generally alright, but it's just the LOL writing style and WTF context to it all.

"My point is that these guys don't give a fuck about the scene." (The Ritalin Kid on the SCORES club in Windsor)

ian, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 23:48 (eighteen years ago)

fake punks always fuck up the scene. so sad.

smurfherder, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 23:55 (eighteen years ago)

"Frankly speaking, I completely don't feel like being inspired by anything. I play what my soul tells me, and what the guys are playing. If anything inspires me, it is inside my self." (Jarek of Poland's UTOPIA)

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 00:46 (eighteen years ago)

that was very funny

elan, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 02:37 (eighteen years ago)

I have a fairly complete set of MRR's from '85 to '87 and occasional issues through 1999 sitting about 10 feet away from me right now. I have probably not read it in 5-7 years. Eugene Chadbourne used to write a great column for them. The whole MRR thing strikes me as kinda sad, really. Like meaning well but still being blinded by prejudices. After Tim Y died somebody stole a bunch of his rare records out of the MRR office, then there was a bitter power stuggle in his absence. That seems kinda emblematic of the whole thing to me now, with hindsight. As with most punk subculture shit, there were a lot of pointers and influences in good directions and even more in bad ones.

that said, let me look for LOLZ in my March 1985 issue...

AHAHAHA the headline - RAMONES DISCOVER ETERNAL YOUTH "I'm 28" says 33 year old bassist.

also: Poison Girls, Tales Of Terror, Frightwig, Vicious Circle, Ruin.

from letter #2, by a Temple Of Psychick Youth member angered by a negative review of NY Scum Haters...

If ("the honorable") Mr. P. Orridge (sic) sticks needles through his penis, that's his right. (And may be his duty). Why, Mr. Farrel thinks he can judge that and those which are above himself is a puzzle.
Mr Farrel has by his actions created a vicious cycle which must be completed. He has started something that will prove his resistance or his downfall. No matter what he will win. All he has to lose is ignorance, fear, and beyond any doubt, discipline will take a new meaing in his life.

oh man I totally remember this next letter! note: MRR always capitalized the names of all bands.

Dear MRR,
I'm 48 years old and I just want to let everyone know that if you think punk started with the SEX PISTOLS or NEW YORK DOLLS, think again. There was shit like that in the 50's only it wasn't called punk/thrash music. It was called "skid row noise". If you don't believe me, ask your old man. And if you think punks wearing swastika armbands is new, think again kids. In 1956, we had a band called "9th Ward Scum". We played at this underground club called "The Bunker". Sure, it wasn't popular, but to us it sounded a lot better than BUDDY HOLLY, FATS DOMINO, or THE BEATLES. To us, these people always sucked. We didn't play that slow bullshit. We looked and sounded a lot like THE MISFITS. We got hassled by cops all the time and once our drummer was picked up for walking down the street with a needle in his ear. Then our club was shut down and the band no longer existed.

"...new MEANING in his life..."

sleeve, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 03:27 (eighteen years ago)

i have every issue from...December 1995 until about May of 2000. they are in boxes in my parents' house, and that's where they're staying.

though i will say that they always gave my fanzines good reviews. and Nic Fitt always made me giggle.

the table is the table, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 04:35 (eighteen years ago)

I got every issue when I was in high school, haw!

roxymuzak, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 05:14 (eighteen years ago)

"lol Skid Row Noise" Zing Crew to thread, pls.

dell, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 08:10 (eighteen years ago)

I guess this is going to be the only instance of "skid row noise" on Google that isn't made up of seperate phrases. I'll take his word for it that they sounded beter than the Beatles in 1956 though.

I kinda think HeartattaCk was maybe funnier, in a 'popular front of Judea' kinda way rather than an overt way

DJ Mencap, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 09:55 (eighteen years ago)

the only issue i bought was the 'some of your friends are already this fucked' post-Conain-suicide issue. all the ink got stuck to my fingers, and i couldn't find any info about music amidst all the politics and posturing.

stevie, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 11:12 (eighteen years ago)

Cobain

stevie, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 11:12 (eighteen years ago)

Hold on, when did Tim Yohannon die? Ah, just looked it up. He'd be 62 if he was still alive!

Matt #2, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 11:17 (eighteen years ago)

I never new Eugene Chadbourne had a column in MRR until I saw an old copy last weekend. Did he do the autobiographical stuff like he did in Forced Exposure?? His FE stuff was a gas!

gnarly sceptre, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 11:35 (eighteen years ago)

I want to hear 9th Ward Scum

Curt1s Stephens, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 11:40 (eighteen years ago)

Did he do the autobiographical stuff like he did in Forced Exposure??

Yeah, and more - tour diaries, political rants, all kinds of stuff. That dude needs to put out a book.

sleeve, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 15:42 (eighteen years ago)

I wondered if he already had...

gnarly sceptre, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 15:54 (eighteen years ago)

Mykel Board & Henry Yu's columns were good, but I used to read them online, rather than in the magazine. I've got a whole load of early issues on PDF that I found somewhere online that are worth reading if you're into that kind of thing.

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 16:10 (eighteen years ago)

Skid row noise!!!

RabiesAngentleman, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 16:30 (eighteen years ago)

they still publish???

The Graham Booth steroid column seems OTM, sorta.

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 16:32 (eighteen years ago)

SKID ROW NOISE 4EVER!

9th Ward Scum sound like the best band ever!

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 17:02 (eighteen years ago)

Glad I'm not the only one who remembers the 9th Ward Scum letter. I totally fell for it and believed the letter-writer, even though the part about being better than the Beatles in '56 didn't make sense.

mike a, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 17:13 (eighteen years ago)

(At least I didn't "ask my old man" about it.)

mike a, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 17:14 (eighteen years ago)

I wish it were real. I really do.

RabiesAngentleman, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 17:17 (eighteen years ago)

Heh, that same letters page (which goes on forever) has a letter from Atilla The Stockbroker!

DJ Mencap, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 17:18 (eighteen years ago)

AND a letter from a member of Amebix about his heroin problems!

I also remember thinking 48 was very, very old and that no one that age could possibly be into punk.

mike a, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 17:18 (eighteen years ago)

Last I heard at least one member of Amebix still has heroin problems!

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 17:19 (eighteen years ago)

I read Ted Rall, Mykel Board, and Tim Yo's columns religiously.

I used to have a crush on Rev. Norb.

roxymuzak, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 17:33 (eighteen years ago)

Skid Row Noise RIP
11:05am-11:35am

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 17:35 (eighteen years ago)

Whatever became of Nick Fitt?

roxymuzak, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 17:42 (eighteen years ago)

I was always too cool to read MRR in HS.

DustinR, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 17:42 (eighteen years ago)

You thought so!

roxymuzak, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 17:44 (eighteen years ago)

i've just started getting MRR again after a gap of 16 years. its pretty much the same as ever, except there are only about 4 pages of letters & the classifieds are almost nonexistent. Mykel Board is still writing the same column over & over again! the latest issues have been grapping with the problem of Myspace: Punk or Not Punk? (haha)

zappi, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 17:52 (eighteen years ago)

omg the classifieds

I secured many a creepy penpal with those when I was like 14. Including Merle Allin!

roxymuzak, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 18:12 (eighteen years ago)

rip Donnie the Punk

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 18:14 (eighteen years ago)

all the ink got stuck to my fingers

So OTM. What the hell did they print this with?!

I remember a VICIOUS, several-month-long debate about the editor's refusal to review an Atom & His Package album.

Savannah Smiles, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 18:22 (eighteen years ago)

FURIOUS GEORGE-GATE

roxymuzak, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 18:23 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think I ever responded to an MRR classified. None of my creepy penpals, and I had a couple, came from that particular source. I did respond to a couple of Flipside classifieds - mostly about tape-trading.

mike a, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 18:44 (eighteen years ago)

Classic eighties up through nineties, for all its absurdities. From a UK point of view, it was the best regular coverage of the US underground available. Haven't seen a copy for years.

Soukesian, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 19:20 (eighteen years ago)

The cover that said simply "The Holy Bible" made a big stir at my high school.
