Rolling not-usually-a-genre-I-listen-to-or-like-or-know-anything-about thread (for all genres) 2008

I have no real clue about what's going on in "dance music" overall, but I can't help noticing that some of the newer (as in last ten years or so) developments are at least tolerable to me, and I can even imagine enjoying them. Some of that minimal stuff and some of that dubstep and now this Balearic mix, or at least some of it: all pretty okay. (Also, I've noticed that I've been liking the small handful of recent reggaeton tracks that have more of a four-to-the-floor feel.)

This is a thread for talking about things you heard and maybe liked so that you don't have to feel stupid about posting on genre specialist threads.

I've probably already made a mistake by calling this Balearic stuff something new, when after all it is a revival, but that could still be new.

And genre experts are obviously invited to respond to genre-know-nothings.

Depends on whether you're talking about his album, which I guess counts as some sort of IDM revival (in which case you'd want to get things like Minotaur Shock, Schneider TM, Freescha, Four Tet, and (James) Holden, plus the usual Warp roster (Boards Of Canada, Aphex et al). If you mean the earlier EPs, there's loads of stuff on the Border Community label which is almost all gold.

i haven't heard any recent dance stuff that i love. not that i've been looking that hard.

scott seward, Thursday, 17 January 2008 01:56 (eighteen years ago)

So, can anyone please explain to me, the dance neophyte/dilettante, what the heck "Balearic" is.

The Reverend, Sunday, 20 January 2008 08:41 (eighteen years ago)

Btw, great thread idea, Rockist.

The early-1990s Balearic Beat sound was typified by a distinctive, relatively heavy, slow (90–110 bpm), R&B-influenced beat consisting of bass drum, snare, and hi-hats (often produced with a Roland TR-909 drum machine) programmed in certain laid-back, swing-beat patterns; plus soul, Latin, African, funk, and dub affectations; and production techniques borrowed from other styles of dance music that were popular at the time.

So chill house, basically?

The only person I know who is listens to dance music played this over a dozen times on NYE. Is this pretty much what's going on out there?

kingkongvsgodzilla, Sunday, 20 January 2008 10:42 (eighteen years ago)

That's just normal vocal house (albeit with an unusually long vocal breakdown section).

The stuff that's called balearic now is a bit different to the stuff that was called balearic in the late 80s/early 90s - for one, Soul II Soul-style R&B is less of a factor.

Now it refers to really slow, somewhat dubby disco-not-disco with a host of non-disco sonic references thrown in (krautrock, post-rock, dub, early synthesiser stuff, post-punk, mid-80s MOR and art rock, world music, sometimes stuff like 70s california rock, folk, blues-rock, ambient etc.). Also flamenco guitar is big.

Check out this promo video for the band Studio.

Here's A Mountain of One playing live.

Thanks Tim!

I'm also interested but clueless re: Balearic.

Now I know what Balearic is, I can't help feeling disappointed. I was expecting it to sound more like Altern-8 and less like Dreadzone.

the next grozart, Sunday, 20 January 2008 15:01 (eighteen years ago)

No such luck - but surely "I was expecting it sound more like Altern-8" applies more to nu-rave?

Tim F, Sunday, 20 January 2008 15:02 (eighteen years ago)

Sadly Balearic is old Woodentops records rather than anything as wasome as Altern8.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 20 January 2008 15:11 (eighteen years ago)

Where do you guys get this stuff (besides record shops I mean)? Are there specialized torrent/P2P networks for Baelaric/Minimal/etc or do you just surf MySpace?

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 20 January 2008 15:13 (eighteen years ago)

this is a thread for the BALEARIC REVIVAL

Rockist Scientist, Sunday, 20 January 2008 15:14 (eighteen years ago)

Right, but when I'm on that thread I'm thinking "ok where is all this stuff you guys are discussing coming from?" Is it really all from MySpace?

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 20 January 2008 15:15 (eighteen years ago)

I guess we will have to wait for Tim or somebody to return. But there are links to mixes and that sort of thing there (beyond myspace).

Rockist Scientist, Sunday, 20 January 2008 15:30 (eighteen years ago)

For mixes:

I'm gonna be doing a balearic entry with downloads in my year-end wrap-up at some point soon.

Tim F, Sunday, 20 January 2008 22:42 (eighteen years ago)

soulseek is pretty good for dance music.

elan, Sunday, 20 January 2008 23:03 (eighteen years ago)

i don't have myspace but i'd imagine that listening to a lot of current dance music (minimal) on it would be terrible because that stuff is all very subtle sound design and the myspace player is lo-fidelity.

elan, Sunday, 20 January 2008 23:05 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, especially through my crappy speaker monitors :-(

the next grozart, Monday, 21 January 2008 00:27 (eighteen years ago)

Kalefa Sanneh had a surprisingly comprehensible piece about "dubstep" (which I know nothing about, though I thought the Burial album last year was boring) in this morning's NY Times.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/21/arts/music/21dub.html?ex=1358658000&en=54f536963f79f647&ei=5088&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss

I also don't understand what the dancefloor subgenre called "bassline" is, but I just noticed that, in 1998, I reviewed an alleged "speed garage" compilation from Moonshine Records in Rolling Stone, and it was called Basslines, so now I'm obviously wondering if that's a coincidence.

xhuxk, Monday, 21 January 2008 17:19 (eighteen years ago)

I want to get this dubstep CD (which appeals to me at least partly for the well-chosen samples of Arabic music--like what I would have liked Muslim Gauze to sound like):
