Yes, there have been Zep/Sabbath threads before:

Taking sides : Zeppelin or Sabbath
Choose One Led Zeppelin Or Black Sabbath

and of course...

Who are bigger enemies of the ILM, the six people who voted they don't like Black Sabbath or the sixteen people who voted they don't like Led Zeppelin?

and there's even this poll...

FIRST FOUR Led Zeppelin albums vs. FIRST FOUR Black Sabbath albums

and still, the fucking followup poll. killing yourself to care.

Do you choose:
* Houses Of The Holy
* Physical Graffiti
* Presence
* In Through The Out Door

or

* Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
* Sabotage
* Technical Ecstasy
* Never Say Die!
?

For bonus, feel free to compare each respective one.

Zep, easy. This isn't even fair.

Davey D, Thursday, 17 January 2008 04:41 (eighteen years ago)

Zep. Because of "Houses Of The Holy" alone.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 17 January 2008 14:06 (eighteen years ago)

Mackro Mackro = Hero Hero

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 17 January 2008 14:11 (eighteen years ago)

Sabbath, easy. Even though Graffitti is good, probably great, SBS and Sabotage slay just about anything. And Never Say Die makes ITTOD sound like the Shaggs.

Bill Magill, Thursday, 17 January 2008 14:58 (eighteen years ago)

^^^yup

henry s, Thursday, 17 January 2008 15:01 (eighteen years ago)

Sabotage is the one that keeps this even a contest, but yeah Physical Graffiti and Houses means a walk for zeppelin.

I also LOVE in through the out door, zep could have become a real strange band in the 80s, esp. when you consider plant's solo output, they were going for some strange synth pop/dino rock hybrid....

i can't really fuck w/presence for drugggz induced grunge stupor either

M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 17 January 2008 17:54 (eighteen years ago)

offhand I'd say Zep (again) easy, but I do not know all of this latter period Sabbath stuff so I should probably keep my mouth shut

I do love me some Dio

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 17 January 2008 17:56 (eighteen years ago)

Never Say Die is a sadly underrated album. I love it. I burn it for anyone who says the Sabs are just a bunch of knuckledraggers. And here and the debut are where the jazz really shine through.

This is even more of a Sabbath cakewalk than the other thread.

Bill Magill, Thursday, 17 January 2008 17:57 (eighteen years ago)

Personally - I'd like to see that later ozzy-fronted Sabbath records taken back in time to their more-hungry, non-coked-up, tighter Sabbath of old ... that said - I voted for the zep, cause Physical Graffiti is just such a fave.

BlackIronPrison, Thursday, 17 January 2008 17:58 (eighteen years ago)

Sabbath wins again. There is no four album stretch where I can see Zep beating Sabbath actually.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 17 January 2008 17:59 (eighteen years ago)

Admittedly I don't care about the last two Sabbath records so this is mostly a reflection of SBS and Sabotage being the best records on this list by a huge margin.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 17 January 2008 18:00 (eighteen years ago)

I actually voted Sabbath on the other thread, but this is LZ easy. So much of my favorite Zep shit on these albums.

Jordan, Thursday, 17 January 2008 18:03 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, the other thread is a real contest, but all four of these Zep albums rule, especially the first two. Presence and Out Door are awesome and underrated. I love SBS and Sabotage, but not enough to forgive the two later ones.

Davey D, Thursday, 17 January 2008 20:10 (eighteen years ago)

Never Say Die crushes Presence.

Bill Magill, Thursday, 17 January 2008 20:37 (eighteen years ago)

yeah WTF almost every sabbath album with ozzy is better than any zepplin record with the exception of Houses of the Holy which is pretty amazing.

akm, Thursday, 17 January 2008 20:39 (eighteen years ago)

Never Say Die crushes Presence.

In Through The Out Door, too

henry s, Thursday, 17 January 2008 20:41 (eighteen years ago)

Heh, for me, THIS is the real battle. (I love 1-4 for both Zep and Sabbath. None are below 9.5, but except for the Zep's fourth which is a 10, the others are 9.5's. the ONLY Sabbath that isn't a 10 is Vol 4., hence Sabbath wins easily for me there, all reverence to all eight albums there nonetheless.)

SBS >>> Houses Of The Holy

Both are fun albums, but Houses doesn't end with "Spiral Architect", nor has some a stomper as "Looking For Today".

Sabotage > Physical Graffiti

Side 2 of Sabotage is more dilute than the super solid Side 1, sure... PG has many great tunes, but it's a bloated double-album though. "Symptom Of The Universe" == "Kashmir" as far as the amazing epic. Sabotage wins on good editting.

Technical Ecstasy <<< Presence

Presence wins here easily mainly because Technical Ecstasy is the most forgettable album of the eight. (although both #7 for Zep and Sabbath are their respective weakest.). Presence is really dirty sounding, as in literal dirt, not "naughty" dirty. Technical Ecstasy is too dilute, although I really like "It's Alright", which most people hate on.)

In Through The Out Door < Never Say Die!

JUUUUUST BARELY, Never Say Die! edges this out, mainly because I think NSD was the first orig. Ozzy-era Sabbath album that was a move to change their sound, whether by choice, by drugs, or both. I love the horns on NSD. It's a grower, that one, but severely underrated. ITTOD is a great album though, damn. "I'm Gonna Crawl" I love (another song many hate on.)

Mackro Mackro, Thursday, 17 January 2008 20:57 (eighteen years ago)

it's all about the match-ups, isn't it

henry s, Thursday, 17 January 2008 21:03 (eighteen years ago)

I am the kind of stoner who will always vote respective Sabbath over Zep.

I eat cannibals, Thursday, 17 January 2008 21:07 (eighteen years ago)

Well, except for #8, each of these pairs had same-year release dates, so I figure they're worthy of matches.

Mackro Mackro, Thursday, 17 January 2008 21:08 (eighteen years ago)

I eat cannibals OTM as far as what will be half of the popular sentiment

Mackro Mackro, Thursday, 17 January 2008 21:09 (eighteen years ago)

Zep has the song Achilles Last Stand which is the best song on any of these albums, so they win. The first four goes to Sabbath for The Wizard though.

filthy dylan, Thursday, 17 January 2008 21:20 (eighteen years ago)

Symptom of the Universe makes Achilles... sound like Row Row Row Your Boat.

Bill Magill, Thursday, 17 January 2008 21:24 (eighteen years ago)

"Houses Of The Holy" is the best thing Led Zeppelin did because it's their most musically varied, trying out a lot of non- hard rock styles that actually worked _better_ than their hard rock material.

"D'yer Maker" is - well, along with "Stairway To Heaven" - the best thing they ever did.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 17 January 2008 22:20 (eighteen years ago)

dire mocker

Mackro Mackro, Thursday, 17 January 2008 22:47 (eighteen years ago)

Oh my goodness.

Davey D, Thursday, 17 January 2008 23:43 (eighteen years ago)

D'yer Mak'er is the worst song recorded by anyone, ever.

nate woolls, Friday, 18 January 2008 08:18 (eighteen years ago)

A pox on you, vile heretic!

Ioannis, Friday, 18 January 2008 10:06 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Thursday, 31 January 2008 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

Crazy results.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 31 January 2008 00:09 (eighteen years ago)

How many people voted for Zep that have never heard the Sabbath 5-8?

Nate Carson, Thursday, 31 January 2008 11:41 (eighteen years ago)

Nonsensical results.

Bill Magill, Thursday, 31 January 2008 15:42 (eighteen years ago)

I voted for Sabbath here, but the results are hardly nonsensical.

Mackro Mackro, Thursday, 31 January 2008 17:00 (eighteen years ago)

I stand by what I said.
