Prolly "Feels Good."

Kevin John Bozelka, Friday, 18 January 2008 00:18 (eighteen years ago)

soooooooooooooo tough

da croupier, Friday, 18 January 2008 00:18 (eighteen years ago)

hmmmm....stuck between "Anniversary" and "Thinking of You" (best Al Green homage ever?) and "Smells Like Funk Spirit"

The Reverend, Friday, 18 January 2008 00:19 (eighteen years ago)

NO OAKLAND STROKE NO CREDIBILITY

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 18 January 2008 00:20 (eighteen years ago)

i'm stuck between all the songs mentioned so far and "Boys And Girls."

da croupier, Friday, 18 January 2008 00:20 (eighteen years ago)

If I Had No Loot!

Jordan, Friday, 18 January 2008 00:24 (eighteen years ago)

the blues. love them tonyies.

tipsy mothra, Friday, 18 January 2008 00:25 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, I hadn't heard "Little Walter" in years, at the time I didn't know that it's just "Wade in the Water".

Jordan, Friday, 18 January 2008 00:26 (eighteen years ago)

"Feels Good" really narrowly over "If I Had No Loot" (all the House of Music stuff still belongs so definitively on the album, one of my favorites, that I have a hard time hearing it as singles)

Matos W.K., Friday, 18 January 2008 02:20 (eighteen years ago)

How many of these were actually hits?

Bobbi Peru, Friday, 18 January 2008 02:22 (eighteen years ago)

The overwhelimg majority were top tens on the R&B chart, three made top ten in pop.

da croupier, Friday, 18 January 2008 02:52 (eighteen years ago)

The Hits thing I have has "Whatever You Want," which was an R&B #1.

da croupier, Friday, 18 January 2008 02:53 (eighteen years ago)

Five R&B Number Ones here, with another five or so Top Ten.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Friday, 18 January 2008 07:44 (eighteen years ago)

Dang.

Feel's good.

Bobbi Peru, Friday, 18 January 2008 10:29 (eighteen years ago)

Croupier, this is also missing some other hits. "Born Not to Know," for instance.

I ended up going for "Anniversary" because I've heard the full version of it now. : D

The Reverend, Sunday, 24 February 2008 02:23 (eighteen years ago)

"Feels Good."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Sunday, 24 February 2008 04:00 (eighteen years ago)

"Let's Get Down" is seriously underrated here.

HI DERE, Sunday, 24 February 2008 04:01 (eighteen years ago)

love me some TTT, but "feels good" is just too classic to not vote for it. if i voted for anything else, it would only to be contrary.

The Reverend, Monday, 25 February 2008 00:03 (eighteen years ago)

Tough competition. I do like "Anniversary" for its realness -- telling your supervisor you're taking the rest of the day off is about as real as it gets.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Monday, 25 February 2008 01:10 (eighteen years ago)

foreal and what a fucking grooze

I forgot to vote in this poll. Consider everything to have one more vote than it has now.

Great poll, Lets Get Down is an all-timer and def where my vote would have gone. Girls and Boys is great too, pretty similar to Lets Get Down but but not better imo.

three years pass...

Just reacquired the band's entire catalogue.

Why'd I get rid of it in the first place? I don't remember.

Sons of Soul is such damn fine album.

ah, I was just thinking about these new jack years lately and went back listening to these teenage sounds over the last few days.
(I had totally missed "Sensitivity" by Ralph Tresvant at the time : it sounds so much like MJ !)
It's quite amazing how almost all these new jack swing tracks have the EXACT same snare drum sound.

Man, rotten news:

https://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/dwayne-wiggins-tony-toni-tone-dies/3812037/

Quoting the FB post:

With broken hearts, we share with you that our beloved D’Wayne passed away this morning surrounded by family and loved ones. Over the past year, he has been privately and courageously battling bladder cancer. Through this fight, he remained committed and present for his family, his music, his fans and his community.
D’Wayne’s life was incomparable, and his music and service impacted millions around the world, including in his hometown of Oakland, California. He was a guitarist, producer, composer, philanthropist, mentor and founding member of Tony! Toni! Tone! He was deeply passionate about providing artist development and mentorship to emerging young musicians, helping to shape the early careers of many.
For now, we ask that you continue to respect our privacy. We mourn with you, and are deeply grateful for your love and support.
In Solidarity,
The Wiggins Family
Rest in Power. Party don’t cry.

I really wanted to go their reunion at Radio City Music Hall - I never saw them before - but I was already committed to accompanying someone to a different show that I don't even remember. Really, really regret that move. Love this group...

rip, i could vibe to those guitars on lay your head on my pillow for eternity

lil $CHUB (Spottie), Friday, 7 March 2025 20:45 (eleven months ago)

very sad news. his guitar tone defined 90s r+b for a while; one of my favorite groups of the era. gonna run an impromptu tonys marathon today in honor, so please forgive any superlative posting to follow.

god the revival is so, so good. so much fun.

also why was this never adopted as the REAL cover???

I didn't really know much about the group behind-the-scenes, but it was painful to find out the 2023 reunion was actually their first (and now only one) with Raphael since they split - i.e. the only chance many later fans had to catch them live.

Reading up about their last and greatest album, it's pretty startling how it was put out given the quality of the album. They were very open about discussing it in interviews at the time, but the promotion was essentially cut short due to tensions within the group and with the label. A tour overseas on two different continents was cancelled, and only two singles were pulled from the album (Raphael said there should've been four). Even though the album never charted that high (peaking at #32), sales didn't tail off that much. 300,000+ copies in eight weeks, 500,000+ by mid-March 1997, then a million sold once they hit August, long after the second and last single had been pulled in March. It's tough finding info, but it doesn't look like they really toured after the fall of 1996 - when they cancelled the tour overseas, I don't think they booked more shows, that was it. And this was after a three-year hiatus too. Pretty amazing that it still went platinum.

birdistheword, Sunday, 9 March 2025 19:49 (eleven months ago)

house of music is truly a joy of an album.

going back through the group's catalogue today has been bittersweet but one thing is very clear: they always felt like their best material was yet to come.

bird otm: they were one of the last great estranged bands in my universe for a long time. it was really comforting to hear about the reunion shows... it kinda felt like "...and we're back!" but alas, no.

Constance Mischievous (Austin), Sunday, 9 March 2025 20:53 (eleven months ago)

I've seen Saadiq a couple times solo: he delivered.

the talented mr pimply (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 9 March 2025 21:07 (eleven months ago)

i've admittedly slept on dwayne's solo album from 2000, but on first listen, it's expectedly diverse and competent contemporary r+b. check out this guitar flex:

Constance Mischievous (Austin), Sunday, 9 March 2025 21:17 (eleven months ago)

also why was this never adopted as the REAL cover???

It was the cover on the cassette edition, I'm pretty sure — the only version I ever owned as physical media.

It's funny, I loved The Revival, it came out my junior year of college and was in heavy rotation for those years. But a lot of things about my music listening shifted after college and while I followed them through Sons of Soul I never actually listened to House of Music. I guess I should!

paper plans (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 9 March 2025 21:35 (eleven months ago)

Confirmed, here's the cassette.

yep, cassette+vinyl. cd cover (and subsequently all reissues) really drop the ball:

house of music is probably their most enduring, but sons of soul is a sentimental classic. love the streetsoul vibe on this. dwayne coming through with the best part on backup vox:

I wish Bounce Around was on spotify/youtube whatever, funk bassline of the 90s right there imo

you can see me from westbury white horse, Sunday, 9 March 2025 23:45 (eleven months ago)

House of Music maybe a bit too slow for too long for my tastes, but The Revival and Sons of Soul probably count as two of my top five swingbeat era R&B albums

you can see me from westbury white horse, Sunday, 9 March 2025 23:46 (eleven months ago)

"If I Had No Loot" was as ubiquitous on MTV in summer '93 as Dre.
