Last Record You Bought Which Embarrassed You

So I'm thinking about buying this christian ska record for my friend for her b-day as a joke, due to the fact we both grew up on that music. I'm a little worried about buying the record, because i know my scene points will drop rapidly. With that in mind, name the last record you were embarassed to buy.

Eh... I got "Sultans of Swing: The Best of" Dire Straits. If I didn't have a fecking splitter of a cold, then I'd defend Dire Straits, and Mark Knopfler's brilliant lyric writing. As it stands, I'll just hope people don't look too hard at the D section of my CD racks.

it is a tie between Miss Kittin Vs. The Hacker, and The Fisherspooner album.

Both bought on hype, and both suck.

TRAIL OF DEAD. I want my $10 and 40 minutes back.

oh yeah i bought a record a couple months back without listening to it, it was by this band called the strappons, who i assumed to be that great chch band. unfortunately it was something else that sucked the big fat one, and i have not inserted it into my record collection, but instead i keep it in an opaque bag somewhere in the cesspool of my bedroom. this is the first time i have told anyone.

the guys who work at Echo can be such tossers about music, like one time Stu gave me a disapproving look for buying a Dusty Springfield record. but i keep going back and buying stuff that i assume most people would be embarassed about, like "jessie's girl" by rick springfield. it's a fun song, why should i be embarassed about it?

Why would you care what someone else thinks about a disc you buy? If that would embarass you then you have some deep rooted problems. You should be embarassed by your STUPID question !

This question reminds me of a time my friend bought a CD by a Christian ska band called the Supertones. Neither of us had any idea they were Christians so we're listening to it and musically they were pretty slammin'. After we stopped chatting and focused more on the music (and lyrics) I think we heard the phrase "like Jesus died for you" or something equally jaw-dropping. We both got this stunned look on our faces and began REALLY listening to the words. The more God references we heard, the harder I laughed. He was not happy. He said he continued listening to it for a few weeks later as background music, but ultimately sold it back because he couldn't take it. It was hilarious because we both found it so unexpected. I suggested the alternate album title "Skankin' for Jesus".

"Ska?" "No, s'God."

Not embarrsed so much as dissapointed,I recently purchased "Red Light Syndrome" from Pluto. The album topped many critics top ten nz releases from 2001. Imagine a combination of the worst Grant Lee Buffalo tune with dodgy samples. Simply awful. Ive only listened twice so maybe it will grow on me. I doubt it.

Beat Happening's "You Turn Me On." Why is this embarassing? Because I've publicly mentioned countless times that I do not like anything by them that I've heard. The main motivation behind buying it? It was $2.99. The underlying motivation behind buying it? I want to be a cool indie hipster. But I give up, because I'll never like Beat Happening.

'This Isn't It' by The Diff'rent Strokes. I was a little unsure about buying it anyway, as I don't even like The Strokes that much, but I was intrigued by the prospect of casiotone fun. But they don't even do it properly, the fucks! It just sounds like a lame instrumental version, rather than cheap bleeps and interesting takes on the music. So now I have a crappy you-got-caught-up-in-the-hype- you-twunt record. Gah.

No-one need be embarrassed to like Dire Straits. Truly Tunnel of Love, Romeo and Juliet, Twistin' By The Pool, and Private Investigations are THE 4 greatest songs of all time. No exaggeration.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Kilian, that is an exaggeration, though, isn't it?

Shane Murphy, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Not at all :)

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dire Straits and Slint held in equal regard? Kilian, admit it, you're really Dave Q.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I dont remember saying Slint were as good as Dire Straits. Boom! Boom!

Dave Q - who he?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Our lord and master. Check the archives for any compare/contrast threads than on the face of it make no sense at all, and see how in fact they make more sense than you'd ever imagine.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

di, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Rubicon? The ex-Fields of the Nephilim band?

Ned Raggett, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No, no. I used to buy them at stores in person. Now she uses Amazon and keeps me out of the loop completely.

nickn, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)
