I miss the days when they'd just RAGE, scream superficially cryptic stuff like "CORPSE! POSE!" and "HERE COME THE DOGS!" and MEAN it.
As for Voivod, I'll abstain and say nothing (for now).

Right now, my money's on Voivod. I'm such a slut.
Oh - and to answer Sundar's 2nd question, I think I'd like to hang out w/ David Lester, because both Lemmy & Jean Smith intimidate the bejeezus out of me.
So unless you consider Warsaw hardcore, or Minutemen math nerd rock...
Audi curiosity, How many people here actually own records by both bands and have seen both bands live?
the recorded tracks I heard (3 yrs ago?) sounded to me to basically derive from two main sources: late 80s Sonic Youth and 90s DC Dischord-style post-hardcore. When I described Unwound this way last summer to a friend who is a fan he agreed. I didn't think at all of Joy Division (who were probably my favourite band at the time) but I didn't listen that much.
"nerd" went along with "rock" not with "math". Post-SY/hc/math rock for nerds. I stand resolutely by this part.
I haven't heard that much Minutemen but what I did hear I would broadly consider post-hardcore, somewhat math-y, and nerdy.
"math" just meant that they do play with time signatures a bit (not 4/4 all the time is still pretty significant for a rock band) and emphasize rhythm and a bit of an angular choppy feel more than Sonic Youth or more droney bands that are also influenced by them. Not that they'd compete with Don Caballero or Shellac in a math-off.
I obviously don't own anything by Unwound.
Taking sides: hanging out with David Lester vs hanging out with Trey Azagthoth.

VOIVOD!

I have every album by both bands. I've seen both live (Voivod x 3, Unwound x 9?).
Both are totally great for different reasons. I love that anyone else would mention these bands in the same breath.

I just picked up a copy of Voivod's- Angel Rat and maybe it's just me but when it first came on I could swear that the song Best Regards was a cover of the Wipers Year of the Rat.
― steampig67, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 12:19 (seventeen years ago)
oops, sorry Return of the Rat .

Voivod, easy. At one time or another, I loved pretty much everything Unwound did - other than Leaves Turn, which is boring as hell. Still, they seem more derivative ("post-SY/hc/math nerd rock" OTM), more tied to specific trends & times than Voivod.
P.S. Seen 'em both, owned records by both, still often listen to Voivod.

Voivod probably deserves to win but goddamn Unwound is taking an unfair rap on this thread, that band was fucking crewsh too.
esp retarded stuff like this:
Voivod, no doubt. I finally downloaded Leaves Turn Inside You the other night and it blows. Radiohead much?

Unwound vs. Pitchblende
― contenderizer, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 16:25 (seventeen years ago)
(I think I'd recently seen both bands when I started this. And might have been high. Unwound are probably a lot better than I gave credit for but I don't even remember them that well.)
― Sundar, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 16:58 (seventeen years ago)
I saw Unwound at a basement party before they had a record (and before Sarah was their drummer). They have always been one of my favorite bands.
Though they had a weak live period in the mid-late nineties, they got the fire back on stage towards the end (probably upon making the smart decision to call it a day).
My favorite albums of theirs are Fake Train, Future of What, and Leaves Turn Inside You.
I can't understand why anyone would dislike that final album. It's like they made the same great record 7 times in a row, and then totally changed gears and made something epic, beautiful, and entirely different. Then they disappeared.
I saw the 2nd to last show in Portland. Truly great.
Don't even get me started on Voivod. I wrote the bio on their (old) official web site.

I don't like Leaves Turn 'cuz it never grabbed me. It sounded nice then and still does now, but no matter how many times I spin it, nothing sinks in. Plus I saw 'em twice on tour for it, and they were totally devoid of energy both times. Managed to bore off good-size, psyched crowds, too.
