TS: Voivod vs Unwound

Who makes better heavy post-SY/hc/math nerd rock, grisly old long-haired French Canadian ex-metallers or upstanding American youth? I thought Voivod was amazing Sunday night and walked out on Unwound in September. Sub-question: hanging out with Jean Smith vs hanging out with Lemmy.

sundar subramanian, Wednesday, 1 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Voivod, no doubt. I finally downloaded Leaves Turn Inside You the other night and it blows. Radiohead much?

Nothingface is one of the rockin'-est records ever.

Rrroooaaarrr!

Kris, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not even fair. Voivod by a mile.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i think anyone outside of the pacific northwest will be sensible and answer the question honestly: le voivod, but of course. i mean, damn, nothingface is an overlooked classic, snake was an amazing vocalist (he could make a line like "lapse of time, synchro-freeze; loot rewind, forward speed" sound great), great bass, guitar, everything. can't wait for their new album.

Never heard any Voivod, but Unwound were so tedious when I saw them a couple of years back I can't see how anyone could do the heavy post- SY/hc/math nerd rock in a less interesting way.

I'd stick up for Unwound until my face wore the shame of a bazillion studded bracelets beating my weary brow, and I will wear such shame with pride for _The Future of What_ and _Repetition_, but their last 2 albums seem a bit uncharacteristic (and strange). I'm still struggling a bit to hear the greatness in _Leaves Turn Inside You_, though I enjoy it well enough. Live, though, touring for their last record, they proved to be mildly underwhelming. Their growth as a band is intriguing, but the pains of such growth seem too obvious to allow for real enjoyment of their progress. I will go out on a limb and predict that their NEXT album would've been The One (now that there won't be another album for at least 10-15 years).

I miss the days when they'd just RAGE, scream superficially cryptic stuff like "CORPSE! POSE!" and "HERE COME THE DOGS!" and MEAN it.

As for Voivod, I'll abstain and say nothing (for now).

Daver, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Although I never saw Unwound live, I thought their albums were good, especially Leaves. I've never heard any Voivod. They sound icky.

Curt, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Both pretty damn great, though I've only seen Unwound live...as that was fantastic as well, then they sorta win by default.

Still, though, Killing Technology and all...

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd understand the battle better if Unwound ever actually played "hc/math nerd rock"...

Brian MacDonald, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I understand the "hc" part; the "math nerd rock" part probably refers to their penchant for odd chords and "poetry". (And song titles like, "Go To Dallas and Take a Left".)

Right now, my money's on Voivod. I'm such a slut.

Daver, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The thing is, the best example of "post-SY/hc/math nerd rock" would have to be Juno. And, darn me to heck, but this Voivod stuff is smackin' of Juno.

Oh - and to answer Sundar's 2nd question, I think I'd like to hang out w/ David Lester, because both Lemmy & Jean Smith intimidate the bejeezus out of me.

Daver, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Juno are way better than Unwound.

adam, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sure, earlier Unwound may smell slightly of "hc", but most of the sound of that fury seemed heavily leaned on Warsaw/Joy Division if anything. And mathy? Well sure, they're not always 4/4... and you can hear a lot of Minutemen in Unwound's stuff..

So unless you consider Warsaw hardcore, or Minutemen math nerd rock...

Audi curiosity, How many people here actually own records by both bands and have seen both bands live?

Brian MacDonald, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't own any Unwound records and I've never seen Voivod live.

Kris, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't stay for that much of their set and I don't think I've sat through an entire album so I'll ultimately defer to the judgment of people who listen to Unwound but in explanation

the recorded tracks I heard (3 yrs ago?) sounded to me to basically derive from two main sources: late 80s Sonic Youth and 90s DC Dischord-style post-hardcore. When I described Unwound this way last summer to a friend who is a fan he agreed. I didn't think at all of Joy Division (who were probably my favourite band at the time) but I didn't listen that much.

"nerd" went along with "rock" not with "math". Post-SY/hc/math rock for nerds. I stand resolutely by this part.

I haven't heard that much Minutemen but what I did hear I would broadly consider post-hardcore, somewhat math-y, and nerdy.

"math" just meant that they do play with time signatures a bit (not 4/4 all the time is still pretty significant for a rock band) and emphasize rhythm and a bit of an angular choppy feel more than Sonic Youth or more droney bands that are also influenced by them. Not that they'd compete with Don Caballero or Shellac in a math-off.

I obviously don't own anything by Unwound.

Taking sides: hanging out with David Lester vs hanging out with Trey Azagthoth.

sundar subramanian, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yikes. Well, I didn't mean to come off as defensive, or make others defensive.. My question was sincerely for curiosity, and not to raise my pedestal or anything. I just wanted to weigh in here as the Unwound fan.

Brian MacDonald, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i own every unwound record including the 7"s and the 12"s and even a few dodgy emo/indie comps they're on. i know voivod from a few mp3s. so you can guess where my sympathies lie.

jess, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Fuck off with the 'nerd' tag already. Do you have to be a 'nerd' to hum along to 'Take Five'? Or dance flamenco? I THINK NOT.

marinecreature, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

five years pass...

VOIVOD!

"Audi curiosity, How many people here actually own records by both bands and have seen both bands live?"

I have every album by both bands. I've seen both live (Voivod x 3, Unwound x 9?).

Both are totally great for different reasons. I love that anyone else would mention these bands in the same breath.

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 12:06 (seventeen years ago)

I just picked up a copy of Voivod's- Angel Rat and maybe it's just me but when it first came on I could swear that the song Best Regards was a cover of the Wipers Year of the Rat.

steampig67, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 12:19 (seventeen years ago)

oops, sorry Return of the Rat .

steampig67, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 12:21 (seventeen years ago)

Voivod, easy. At one time or another, I loved pretty much everything Unwound did - other than Leaves Turn, which is boring as hell. Still, they seem more derivative ("post-SY/hc/math nerd rock" OTM), more tied to specific trends & times than Voivod.

P.S. Seen 'em both, owned records by both, still often listen to Voivod.

contenderizer, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 16:12 (seventeen years ago)

Voivod probably deserves to win but goddamn Unwound is taking an unfair rap on this thread, that band was fucking crewsh too.

esp retarded stuff like this:

Voivod, no doubt. I finally downloaded Leaves Turn Inside You the other night and it blows. Radiohead much?

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 16:14 (seventeen years ago)

Unwound vs. Pitchblende

contenderizer, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 16:25 (seventeen years ago)

(I think I'd recently seen both bands when I started this. And might have been high. Unwound are probably a lot better than I gave credit for but I don't even remember them that well.)

Sundar, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 16:58 (seventeen years ago)

I saw Unwound at a basement party before they had a record (and before Sarah was their drummer). They have always been one of my favorite bands.

Though they had a weak live period in the mid-late nineties, they got the fire back on stage towards the end (probably upon making the smart decision to call it a day).

My favorite albums of theirs are Fake Train, Future of What, and Leaves Turn Inside You.

I can't understand why anyone would dislike that final album. It's like they made the same great record 7 times in a row, and then totally changed gears and made something epic, beautiful, and entirely different. Then they disappeared.

I saw the 2nd to last show in Portland. Truly great.

Don't even get me started on Voivod. I wrote the bio on their (old) official web site.

Nate Carson, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 01:45 (seventeen years ago)

I don't like Leaves Turn 'cuz it never grabbed me. It sounded nice then and still does now, but no matter how many times I spin it, nothing sinks in. Plus I saw 'em twice on tour for it, and they were totally devoid of energy both times. Managed to bore off good-size, psyched crowds, too.
