We are entering a period of really weak years now, but I will still go on counting downwards. Quality increases from 1967 onwards again :)

As long as "Alone Again (Naturally)" is present, no reason to complain though. My vote for that one even though "Popcorn" and "Son Of My Father" were great too. And maybe I should add "Rocket Man" too, just to mention three examples of very early appearances of synths in the UK singles list. :)

Geir Hongro, Monday, 21 January 2008 01:58 (eighteen years ago)

I forgot "Crazy Horses" on my fave singles of the 1970s list so I'm voting for it here. But "Alone Again (Naturally)" is the true winner.

Kevin John Bozelka, Monday, 21 January 2008 02:01 (eighteen years ago)

Damn, there's some good stuff on this list!

My pick has the same intro as "Rainy Day Women no 12 and 23", alright?

Mark G, Monday, 21 January 2008 09:12 (eighteen years ago)

My pick also, and yes there is a certain resemblance.

Not a bad fifty; Silver Machine to Big Six is quite a span.

Dingbod Kesterson, Monday, 21 January 2008 09:29 (eighteen years ago)

My first year as a conscious pop consumer - Radio Luxembourg on the big old valve radio in the Kitchen - Tony Prince, Peter Powell, Kid Jensen; I can remember everyone of those songs. Voted for Telegram Sam because it was the first song I obsessed about

sonofstan, Monday, 21 January 2008 09:35 (eighteen years ago)

I found a copy of "Mouldy old Music" (I nearly typed "Women" for music there, c'mon wkae up!) a couple months ago. A mix of weird, Neulike weirdness, and cabaret style MOM style covers (Yellow Submarine, for instance)

Mark G, Monday, 21 January 2008 09:35 (eighteen years ago)

MOD style covers I meant. But you knew that.

Mark G, Monday, 21 January 2008 09:36 (eighteen years ago)

"School's Out" crushes the competition! And Geir's crazy, as per usual--there's lot's of good stuff on this list.

Ioannis, Monday, 21 January 2008 10:08 (eighteen years ago)

Oh christ, this is a great list! How to choose between Son Of My Father, Mould Old Dough, Take Me Back 'Ome, Rocket Man, You Wear It Well, Without You, Crazy Horses, Silver Machine???

But, after a few minutes of agonised deliberation I voted for 'Sweet Talkin' Guy' narrowly over 'Popcorn'.

1972 definitely the best year of the decade until 77/8/9.

Dr.C, Monday, 21 January 2008 10:49 (eighteen years ago)

It was a great year, to be sure, again proving that the charts are always better when big changes are happening and The Man hasn't quite worked it out yet.

Neil "MA-THURRRRR OF MOOOOOOINE" Reid and "American Pie" though...

Dingbod Kesterson, Monday, 21 January 2008 10:54 (eighteen years ago)

We should do a 'best act to chart after Opportunity Knocks' poll. I'm voting for Mary Hopkin....maybe.

Hang on, was Neil Reid from Op Knocks, or New Faces?

Dr.C, Monday, 21 January 2008 11:09 (eighteen years ago)

OKx

Mark G, Monday, 21 January 2008 11:09 (eighteen years ago)

Thought so.

Dr.C, Monday, 21 January 2008 11:11 (eighteen years ago)

I know he's now totally beyond the pale but I voted for GG's 'Rock and Roll (Parts 1 and 2)', which still sounds like somthing beamed in from another planet.

Billy Dods, Monday, 21 January 2008 12:15 (eighteen years ago)

I loved the concept of a record entitled "Rock & Roll Part 2" as if to say: that story's over (cf. "American Pie") and here's the beginning of the next chapter. Still a great single despite its co-creator.

Dingbod Kesterson, Monday, 21 January 2008 12:17 (eighteen years ago)

Re: GG What I know is Jonathan King may be creepy, but I will always like him for discovering two of my all-time favourite bands

Geir Hongro, Monday, 21 January 2008 12:31 (eighteen years ago)

I'm kind of surprised "Starman" didn't make the Top 50 btw.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 21 January 2008 13:12 (eighteen years ago)

Another great list.

No doubt what is no 1 for me here. Schools Out is my personal 'year zero', where i realised just how good music could be. Butterfly in the stomach ball tightening adrenaline rush of a song - and I was 10. It still affects me the same way.

Guilty_Boksen, Monday, 21 January 2008 13:26 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I think "School's Out" was when I got back into music, properly.

Mark G, Monday, 21 January 2008 14:12 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Sunday, 27 January 2008 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

Geir OTM about "Popcorn"!

Sundar, Sunday, 27 January 2008 00:03 (eighteen years ago)

But my vote was for "Alone Again (Naturally)" :)

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 27 January 2008 01:50 (eighteen years ago)

My fave alltime song is on this list....so I voted for it!

peepee, Sunday, 27 January 2008 02:18 (eighteen years ago)

Gary Glitter just above Gilbert O'Sullivan (for "Claire," Not "Alone Again").

Eric H., Sunday, 27 January 2008 02:20 (eighteen years ago)

Gary Glitter and "Clair"..... Hmmmmmmmm.... :)

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 27 January 2008 04:27 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Monday, 28 January 2008 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

"Amazing Grace" at #2? WTF?????

Geir Hongro, Monday, 28 January 2008 00:03 (eighteen years ago)

Melody, Geir, melody.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Monday, 28 January 2008 05:54 (eighteen years ago)

All this talk about "School's Out" and only one person ended up voting for it.

The unlikely success of "Amazing Grace" I attribute to "Red Red Wine"-style external poll-spiking.

Dingbod Kesterson, Monday, 28 January 2008 09:47 (eighteen years ago)

Mass influx of redirections from the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards official website...

Mark G, Monday, 28 January 2008 09:56 (eighteen years ago)

Python Lee Jackson In A Broken Dream

Actually, this is pretty great, and so is the tale of how it was recorded.

(The original session was produced by John Peel)

Mark G, Monday, 28 January 2008 09:58 (eighteen years ago)

Quite surprised to see "Crazy Horses" such a big winner, but then it undeniably ROCKS!

Dingbod Kesterson, Monday, 28 January 2008 10:03 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not. (Surprised, that is)

One of the all time "did you see them on TOTP last night?" playground reactions. Up til then, it'd been all 'nice' oldies cover versions from Donny.
