elan, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 02:39 (eighteen years ago)

Oh God, this is going to make me think, my own lack of years often makes me a bit too immersed in the 20th century.

In no order:

Luomo - Tessio
Alex Smoke - Chica Wappa
Alex Under - Las Bicicletas Son Para El Verano (The 12" I guess)
Sutekh - Periods Make Sense
Akufen - Skidoos
Pantha du Prince - This Bliss
Isolee - We Are Monster
Matthew Dear - Dog Days
Soul Capsule - Law of Grace (I gave a hearty chuckle to the recognition of my fondness for this track in the transcendent songs thread, but damned if I haven't moved to tears just thinking about it)
????? Maybe Alcachofa? Hawaii You by Matt John? I get the feeling if I ever actually got around to hearing Triple R's Friends in full, it would make the list. Maybe The Pepe Bombilla EP by Luciano. Who knows?

mehlt, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 02:49 (eighteen years ago)

that soul capsule is great. i also really love 'evolved' on the aspect music retrospective. but the whole thing is great. i read that melchior was really self-conscious when he released the meaning (which came with the aspect music retrospective bonus CD) that maybe the bonus CD was better than the album it was packaged with.

elan, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 03:04 (eighteen years ago)

i see you put tessio in there. why did i forget luomo? i even relistened to vocalcity and the present lover last night when i had this thread idea. i'd like to rep for Vocalcity. next to we are monster, it is THE album that got me into house music. still in my itunes top 25, three years on.

elan, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 03:07 (eighteen years ago)

i should clarify; the meaning was the primary release, and the aspect music cd was his way of saying "these records will never be repressed, here is a bonus cd".

elan, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 03:08 (eighteen years ago)

i remember some friends were like "this techno music is some bullshit. what's wrong with you?" and i played tessio and they were like "okay wow".

elan, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 03:10 (eighteen years ago)

now one of those friends is a techno dj.

elan, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 03:19 (eighteen years ago)

and his list will probably be much more deep cuts than mine. i barely follow new stuff anymore.

elan, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 03:21 (eighteen years ago)

see, this would have been my number one, but it's from 1999.

elan, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 19:24 (eighteen years ago)

jeez, it's really hard to believe all of the alan braxe & fred falke stuff is from the 2000s. in my mind, all of the french house and detroit and hard techno stuff i love falls into the category of "90s music" in my mind, even if it's actually from the 00s (like "jaguar" or "diabla" or "mine to give").

when i think 00s i just jump ahead to 10 minute minimal / electrohouse epics.

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 19:31 (eighteen years ago)

Vahid otm, the early 00s are so different to the the last 4 or 5 years. I need to think about this.

Ronan, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 20:14 (eighteen years ago)

yeah also agree - it seems such a stark contrast now more than ever. am still pre-occupied with the death of british dance music hence the UK-only list above but we're at the point where you can easily dismiss a lot of early 00s stuff because it's unfashionable now, very easy to ignore (with so much new stuff + so much (re)discovery and rehabilitation of 20-30yr old stuff) or even been superceded somehow, apart from the actual popular trend-setter tracks (could've included 'beau mot plage' because didn't hear it until '00 or even later - but that always felt kinda 90s as much as contemporary or even ahead of it's time too).

i like this distinction in a way. you can feel that things have moved on a lot but maybe still too early to evaluate early 00s properly.

blueski, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 21:40 (eighteen years ago)

Carsten Jost - Black axis.

jim, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 22:12 (eighteen years ago)

jim, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 22:12 (eighteen years ago)

i see you put tessio in there. why did i forget luomo? i even relistened to vocalcity and the present lover last night when i had this thread idea. i'd like to rep for Vocalcity. next to we are monster, it is THE album that got me into house music. still in my itunes top 25, three years on.

Yeah, those two were definitely 2 of the biggest for me and house. Man, I still remember getting an urgent recommendation on ILM to listen to it years ago. This was back when I was still kind of iffy about unabashedly dancey music, let alone something so deep-housey, wonderful.

AH! I realized what my final selection should be: Closer Musik - 1 2 3 No Gravity.

mehlt, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 01:16 (eighteen years ago)

elan i am thinking way too hard.

also this is funny: i remember some friends were like "this techno music is some bullshit. what's wrong with you?" and i played tessio and they were like "okay wow". oh those heady noise days. i still listen to lots of noise, tho, as my angelblood LP has been on my decks every day for the past two weeks.

anyway, i'm just gonna do it my own style (anything is game), based on what i know i've listened to most:

- Ricardo Villalobos- Live at Awakenings festival ( a tape of this is still is my car. it is warped because i have listened to it too many times.)
- Luciano- Bomberos
- Daze Maxim- Mathematical Breakfast (this is what convinced me on him, and is so ill)
- Heiko Laux- SenseFiction Remixes Part One (surgeon kills it here)
- Underground Resistance- Interstellar Fugitives (it is so hard to choose, and this comp stands on its own)
- Underground Resistance- Waveform ('backroad to nirvana' might be one of my favorite UR tracks)
- Henrik Schwartz- Imagination Limitation (so beautiful, uplifting...ah...)
- Donnacha Costello- Grape (no matter what this one will always be the sickest, imho)
- Julien Jabre- Swimming Places (Ingrosso Mix) & (Sydenham Mix) <---- i don't understand the hate towards these. they're so elegant it's kind of gross.
- Kelley Polar- "Here in the Night" (more new-disco, but eh, beat is very dry house)

and then about a million that i couldn't think of off the top of my head.

the table is the table, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 03:57 (eighteen years ago)

r1o natsume, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 19:00 (eighteen years ago)

i think the interesting contrast here is how few underground crossovers there have been in the second half of the 00s. there were loads in the first half, the last massive one i can think of now is what, justice vs simian (or "heater" probably but that never seemed quite as omnipotent as something like "lady"). it seems house got pushed too far underground at some point.

r1o natsume, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 19:08 (eighteen years ago)

Don't think I ever heard justice vs simian on the radio.

jim, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 19:42 (eighteen years ago)

Hearing Heater on radio 1 and realising that a minimal track with a cumbia sample was being played during the day on that piece of shit made me think the world was alright for a few minutes one day. Not that I'm even that keen on it.

jim, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 19:43 (eighteen years ago)

FUCK IT GODDAM. i didn't even mean 'Interstellar Fugitives.' I meant 'Follow the Leader'.

jabba hands, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 07:16 (eighteen years ago)

one year passes...

For a timely revival...

In an order not yet fully defined:

My POIV thus far

Jan Jelinek et. al.
Sasu Ripatti et. al.
Isolee
Ricardo Villalbos

But who are the remaining 6?

Thomas Melchior (he's probably earned it)
Luciano (though sadly I'm skeptical his relevance will carry over to the next decade)
Richie Hawtin (how far he's come when 3 years ago there wouldn't have been a second thought)
?
?
?

I should think of some guys that don't live in berlin or aren't so obvious, otherwise this will be a pretty damn boring list, but hey, I guess I'm just that boring of a person.

EDB, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 05:40 (sixteen years ago)

justus köhncke - timecode
justus köhncke - 2 after 909
hercules & love affair - blind (serge santiago rmx)

triola - leuchtturm (wighnomy's polarzipper rmx)
akufen - my way
matthew dear - dog days
nôze - kitchen
geiger - good evening (supermayer rmx)

(9/9/8/9) (cozwn), Tuesday, 15 December 2009 16:32 (sixteen years ago)

isolée - beau mot plage (live @ optimo)

(9/9/8/9) (cozwn), Tuesday, 15 December 2009 16:33 (sixteen years ago)

Akufen should be there too, but I guess he didn't really do much in the two last thirds of the decade.
Matthew Dear similarly has been a big influence on me, but most of his post mouth to mouth stuff (incl. Asa Breed) does little for me. Still looking at 5 year cross section for him is still pretty impressive.
