Nasality -- C or D?

Pitchfork review re Darnielle: "Passionate nasal-fi". Another matter entirely, but how about those who sing (or rap) with pronounced nasality? From Robert Johnson to countless C&W males to the brothers Everly & Gibb to Eminem. Annoying affectation? Limitation? Or is the sinus cavity the window to Soul?

Joseph Spence sounds very nasal indeed = classic. R&B singers who mistake sounding nasal and yodelling a la Jimmy Saville for being soulful = Dud.

Nasal singers often times get on my last nerve. I want to grab them and say, "Look, you've got an entire resonant space up there, why are you so focused on singing through your NOSE?" Then again, you've got people like Macy Gray who could do herself a world of good by singing more nasally, so it's not like nasal is always bad.

Does "fun" mean "severe beating" in that sentence?
