Terrible and shocking. His 2007 disc --- Wátina -- was fantastic and felt so alive.

I only discovered Palacio at the back end of last year. Yes, a terrific album and a sad loss.

Based on an e-mail from a publicist, I think his band is going to try to continue the planned US tour in March and April. It will be a tribute thing.

Just got a copy of the Umalali: The Garifuna Women's Project disc that came out in March, I guess: just lovely. I think this music is even more gorgeous when women sing it.

Saw Umali and the Garifuna Collective at the free Smithsonian Folklife Fest on the mall in Washington DC--nice African and Latin and Caribbean hybrid rhythms, unique vocals, straightforward but effective electric guitar and 2 great percussionists. they'll be playing more free gigs on the 2nd weekend of the fest between the 7th and 11th.

I almost think I should put the current version of this group (with Palacio passed away) on a different thread, but there's probably not enough interest to justify a thread just for them. I wonder if there's a catch-all thread for that part of the world?

Nothing new out, not on a hip label, no mixtapes, not breaking new ground or novelty-ish enough...Oh well, I still like 'em.
