Limited to UK top 40 singles otherwise it would be even more unwieldy. Sadly no Roland Rat, Mandy Smith or Brilliant but plenty others to choose from.

Billy Dods, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:55 (eighteen years ago)

Here's a song... by a gay guy.

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:56 (eighteen years ago)

"Shocked" purely for the italo-house piano intro

Mark G, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:56 (eighteen years ago)

There are a couple hundred hits missing here, you know...

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:58 (eighteen years ago)

But anyway, "Showing Out" remains their masterpiece. A great pop single, no less.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:59 (eighteen years ago)

WHEN LOVE TAKES OVER YOU--Donna Summer 25/11/1989 72
ONE LOVE ONE WORLD--Romi & Jazz 9/ 6/1990 98

Don't know how these two sneaked in.

Billy Dods, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:59 (eighteen years ago)

respectable.. although you spin me round had me thinking twice

electricsound, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 12:00 (eighteen years ago)

'There are a couple hundred hits missing here, you know...'

Look at the first line Geir.

Billy Dods, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 12:01 (eighteen years ago)

This is impossible you maniac.

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 12:03 (eighteen years ago)

"Goodbye" - 1418

Mark G, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 12:04 (eighteen years ago)

Absolutely ridiculously there are at least 20 records on that list I could vote for unreservedly impossible.

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 12:04 (eighteen years ago)

thought this was done already. 'You Spin Me Round'. would be one of the most lauded late Italo bangers as an instrumental.

blueski, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 12:08 (eighteen years ago)

"Whenever I'm Good and Ready" and "He Ain't No Competition" are not going to get the love they deserve here.

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 12:09 (eighteen years ago)

I can't believe I agree with Geir on something

Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 12:29 (eighteen years ago)

Isn't it "We ain't ever gonna' be respectable"?

Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 12:30 (eighteen years ago)

Really you'd also need to filter in all the hits Waterman produced under the pseudonym of Peter Collins, which would include the Belle Stars, Tracey Ullman, Musical Youth, Nik Kershaw and others.

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 12:32 (eighteen years ago)

e.g. spacemen 3

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 12:33 (eighteen years ago)

"Better The Devil You Know" is the most perfect of about a dozen nearly completely perfect things on that list.

edwardo, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 12:36 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, when he was on that Stiff documentary (repeated last night on BBC4), about a year ago, I was all WTF?? I don't remember his name on any Stiff records????

AH, Pete Collins. That explains it. Not why he renamed himself though.

Mark G, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 12:44 (eighteen years ago)

I'm going with "This Time I Know It's For Real", by a whisker over "Love In The First Degree" and "Better The Devil You Know".

mike t-diva, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 12:50 (eighteen years ago)

Then again, that was Waterman alone (as was 14-18 which I vividly remember seeing on TOTP) (xp).

Out of the above it would have to be "Showing Out" but 'tis pity (a) Kylie's "Turn It Into Love" wasn't a single in the UK (Hazell Dean's cover killed her career stone dead since she had to endure the outrage of Kylie fans angry at her for "stealing Kylie's song) and (b) Mandy Smith's "I Just Can't Wait," the 12-inch mix of which is the greatest thing SAW ever did, missed the Top 40.

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 12:55 (eighteen years ago)

You Spin Me Round.

chap, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 13:00 (eighteen years ago)

From what I've read Peter Waterman wasn't Peter Collins, but he worked with him.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 13:04 (eighteen years ago)

Found this which certainly overturns my particular preconception.

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 13:12 (eighteen years ago)

"Better The Devil You Know" is the most perfect of about a dozen nearly completely perfect things on that list.

OTM this.

Madchen, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 15:56 (eighteen years ago)

xpost
Wasn't it the Cocker-nee double negative 'we ain't never gonna be respectable?'

either way, it wins

sonofstan, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 16:00 (eighteen years ago)

Ferry Aid.

most quickly forgotten Aid ever.

Hamildan, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 16:14 (eighteen years ago)

Oh I remember it all right. I have to struggle to remember who did what on Band Aid II, however, except that Luke Goss didn't get to belt out The Line Made Famous By Bono as the Sun misleadingly led us to believe.

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 16:19 (eighteen years ago)

who did?

Forgettable aid? Try "AmAid", the Reading Amateur Groups BandAid style festival.

Mark G, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 16:20 (eighteen years ago)

It was Matt Goss in "harmony" with Echo Beach star Jason Donovan.

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

aargh, I can actually hear him going "instead of YOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUU" in my head now. cheers.

ailsa, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

sorry, that's more like "YEEEHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO"

ailsa, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

SHOCKED (DNA MIX)--Kylie Minogue 1/ 6/1991 6

^this one

DavidM, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 16:33 (eighteen years ago)

"Lover Come Back"

Curt1s Stephens, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 21:33 (eighteen years ago)

"You Spin Me Round" MUST win this...
Also it would be good to have a poll with only singles were written by SAW, and not produced. In this case my vote would go to "Respectable".

zeus, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 22:31 (eighteen years ago)

"Lover Come Back"

-- Curt1s Stephens

Yes yes yes!

moley, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 23:40 (eighteen years ago)

"You Spin Me Round" - because of impact it had when I first heard it, and saw the video. It's one of the stand out moments for me from that year.

snoball, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 23:46 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

How can this be anything other than Donna Summmer's "This Time I Know It's For Real"? For the first and only time in their careers they work with a vocalist who can humanize what Neil Tennant ambivalently called disco for the proles. I love lots of these songs (Dead or Alive, Paul Lekakis, all the Bananarama stuff), but Summer comes closest to redeeming their dubious artistry.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 00:35 (eighteen years ago)

WHERE IS PAUL LEKAKIS?????

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 00:38 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

ONE VOICE--Bill Tarmey 3/ 4/1993 16 1

Vera Duckworth would be very proud.

Billy Dods, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 09:59 (eighteen years ago)

SAY I'M YOUR NUMBER ONE--Princess 3/ 8/1985 7 0

This one is a lost gem, btw

Mark G, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 10:04 (eighteen years ago)

SAW did like their SOS Band.

Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 10:15 (eighteen years ago)

Since Pete Waterman actually discovered Donna Summer - she was in the original 1973 line-up of Silver Convention before Moroder got to her - "This Time I Know It's For Real" was payback time; he helped put her back on the charts at a stage when nobody wanted to know her following her stupid rant about Aids.

Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 10:18 (eighteen years ago)

YOU SPIN ME ROUND (LIKE A RECORD)--Dead Or Alive 1/12/1984 1 6

Related link but ABSOLUTELY NOT WORK SAFE: You spin me round (like a record)

stephen, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:07 (eighteen years ago)

i missed this but i guess i would have been the 2nd vote for lonnie gordon. love lots of these, but that song is so perfect.
