I haven't posted on ILM in a bit, so spare me if this has topic has been breeched before... Just saw Super Furry Animals the other night... J-Christ, if it's not the best concert I've ever been to. Freaking damn great show. Anybody else seen them live? If not, fly to the nearest venue on the current US tour and see them while you can. "Goooooolllllldddddeeen retriever..." Walk, run, fly to the nearest venue...

On a side note, I dare anybody to name a current band that mixes so many musical styles together better than SFA does...

I saw them this past weekend. Great show - "Golden Retriever" roxx!

J Blount, Wednesday, 1 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Their final show of the tour, at least in the US, is here in Seattle next Saturday, May 10th... I'll certainly be there

Brian MacDonald, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Brian, Gruff told me they'd be playing in Vancouver as well, so I'd recommend heading north after that Seattle date. I'm actually headed toward Seattle and Vancouver (from Florida) just a couple of days after the band will be playing there, so I'm a tad disappointed I'll miss another venue. If I could catch SFA again on this tour, I'd give an arm and a leg... actually maybe just an arm, since I'm suffering from carpal tunnel S as it is...

Playing LA in six days, and I look forward to it greatly, I do.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Did I miss them on the east coast? rats!

A Nairn, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tim, are you visiting here or moving here? Either way... buddy! Hook up time.

Brian MacDonald, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the super furries don't mix styles that well. their albums, bar radiator, all contain at least 4 annoyingly quirky, half-assed in- joke songs. 5 albums in and people still talk about their "potential". about time they produced a stone-cold masterpiece.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

*scratches head* Well, seeing as they have four times already, that can only mean their real masterpiece will Change Rock As We Know It! Woohoo!

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Four times already? Change rock as we know it?

I think I just laughed up a lung! The Furries are a pleasent enough melange of Love, Beach Boys and Roxy music who need to focus a bit more over the course of an album. Let's not delude ourselves. Leave that to wanker NME journalists who claim thet Guerilla is an era- defining classic. How come nobody listens to it anymore then? Grrrr!

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Alright, Kilian is my brother so all those who feel his opinions on the Super Furries are so far off target that I should throw his dinner in the bin this evening, say aye.

Shane Murphy, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Let's not delude ourselves.

Heavens, I'm not -- and as I lurve Love, the Beach Boys and Roxy, all is well. :-) Your brother can do as he wishes.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Despite what Shane says, I am going to dine heartily tonight. Im also going to dine out on my dislike of Guerilla. It just slings tons and tons of random squiggly sounds onto half-tunes, much in the manner of Blur's boring 13. No lightness of touch. Radiator is more coherent, more emotional, more tuneful, yet equally adventurous. Id say "Rings Around..." is prob their second best. They have so many absolutely amazing songs, I really feel they CAN make a classic album, but they haven't yet. Great singles band, I agree.

Then we have a fine middle ground, and happiness is assured.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Im far from happy. I just found out Cliffard. T. Ward is dead.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Who is (or was) this guy, anyway? Never heard of him.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Check out today's Cliffard T. Ward thread. Im not a huge fan, but he was a big fixture on the car stereo growing up, what with my folks liking him and all that. Didn't realise he was deceased until today, and as a result I am greatly saddened. This is why my replies are even more sarcastic and bitter than usual today :( Am almost tempted to dust off the old cassette and play it. Almost.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

He's right you know. Despite having some FANTASTIC SONGS such as Northern Lites, Something Comes From Nothing, Ice Hockey Hair, Man Don't Give A Fuck, all of their albums are messy and incoherent and as whole albums just don't work. Typical then that the two that are LEAST guilty of this Radiator and Rings Around The World are absolutely fantastic and as addictive as crack for about 2 weeks and then you just want to throw them in the bin and never listen again.

They're an odd odd bunch. Having said that Northern Lites made it onto my 15 perfect songs over on ILE so I for that they deserve praise. And the 2 weeks where you enjoy the album are a wonderful 2 weeks to be sure.

Ronan, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Id have to disagree on a couple of points. "Radiator" in my view, is pretty durable, and can be listened to for more than two weeks. Also "The Man Don't Give..." would have to be put down as one of their crap novelty, in-joke numbers.

i happen to be a massive super furries fan and believe every album of theirs barring the mediocre rings around the world to be a stone cold classic, but to those who don't agree,i recommend mwng, which is,even after two years or so of constant listening, still probably the most perfect album in every way that i have ever heard...

robin, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I agree that Mwng is the best, even thought it's in that weird language.

Sean, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Saw them last week, and they were fantastic - i'd seen them twice before, but this show was the most put-together (and also the largest - maybe 500 people there! the first time i saw them maybe 4-5 years ago, maybe 50-75 people were in the audience, and they were projecting video onto an old piece of cloth.) they've got a great A/V setup this time. the only annoying thing was that they didn't do an encore this time around.

i really want to get that dvd...

geeta, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd have said Gorky's up until recently, before they streamlined the sound. Now I'll just have to say this: RHEOSTATICS.

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes you should, Geeta. I don't know why I keep forgetting Mwng, but it doth rule, it doth.
