funk master flex - classic or dud/search & destroy

i recently picked up 60 minutes of funk volume 3 for a pittance - and while flex's skillz are obviously not brilliant, that's not the point. there are some great tracks on it (eg. junior mafia - get money), there are some very big names - well, the biggest names really (for 1998) - and it seems like 90% of the instrumentals over which the names "freestyle" are rza tracks, plus wu-tang appear several times as vocalists. flex keeps it moving reasonably well (although there is the annoying slick rick interlude, and a recurring "push it up everybody" thing) so it all adds up to 76 enjoyable minutes (not 60?? he lied!) even though shaquille o'neil is on it.

volume 5 is coming out soon - starring alicia keys... hmm.

anyway, what do you make of him and his mix cds? which are the best? what are some mix cds/tapes in a similar vein that are better?

vol two is the best but three and four are both good too

vol. 1 is really good. maybe more canonical (KRS-1, rock the bells, etc) but he doesn't talk too much except at the end and the beginning. he can get a freestyle command performance out of anybody, but at it's hard not to see him as a joke w/his gold-plated technics and silly catchphrases i.e. 'we're SO focused'

so to recap, the good ones are vols 1, 2, 3, and 4 :)

the KRS- 1 "sermon" at the end of vol 1 is untouchable. i bet ethan hates BDP and i do too a lot of the time. but tell me who could pull that off besides him. of course flex has to come on directly afterward and ruin the mood. but vol 1 is worth it for that alone.

the best is the stuff I used to tape off of Hot 97 before he came out with those cd's.

What are you all on about.... volume 3 is just as good as the rest, loads of decent scratching and mixes, Fatjoe, Busta Rhymes, and not forgetting that rap legend Mariah Carahy. Its all good, definatly one for the summer out in the car with the windows down and the system up!

Hey, can someone tell me what Funk Flex tape has the Big Pun & Fat Joe freestyle over the "Ice Cream" beat?

twenty-one years pass...

Dud as a NYC radio DJ. His bullshit interruptions to songs with airhorns, explosions and yapping were so tiring and unlistenable. His last radio show will be on Monday.
