Am I the only one who is totally in love with this shit? Especially "City of Brotherly Love" and "Save Us (The Jam)".

Ashley Beedle is brilliant. New Jersey Deep is one of those tracks that justifies dance music.
I have a few of his disco re-edits, but I am at a complete loss to train spot them. I wish I could say more about this guy, because everything that I have come across has been very good.

"Heavy Gospel Morning" and the entire "Walter's Room" LP are also quite wonderful...
other Beedles to seek: Ballistic Brothers, Black Jazz Chronicles

huge fan. i have all of his stuff and recommend all of it. i actually prefer his ballistic brothers material to his black science orchestra material.
― moonship journey to baja, Friday, 25 January 2008 19:33 (eighteen years ago)
i just posted "Save Us (The Jam)" on the blog.
i think i will check out this other stuff once i've digested what i've gotten recently-- what Ballistic Brothers is best as an intro?
― the table is the table, Friday, 25 January 2008 19:50 (eighteen years ago)
the best Ballistic Brothers song is "I'll Fly Away", but it is not typical (the only jungle song they did)..."Portobello Cafe" is also good...they only recorded one album (London Hooligan Soul)...
― henry s, Friday, 25 January 2008 20:06 (eighteen years ago)
well, fuck me running!...I forgot about Rude System, and the Eccentric Afros thing...
― henry s, Friday, 25 January 2008 20:08 (eighteen years ago)
haha yeah they recorded four albums.
they cut two albums as ballistic brothers vs the eccentric afros, but that's more of a trip hop / big beat sound. i do really like those albums but they fit more in the ninja tune / mo'wax aesthetic than anything disco-ish or housey. "london hooligan soul" is also like that, reminds me a lot of lionrock or monkey mafia (i still like both of those groups).
i would recommend listening to "prophecy reveal (night time is the right time mix)", "blacker (for the good times)", "rule of the bone", "future james (jack)" and "streets is real" and see if you want more.
people have said a fair amount of snarky shit on here about beedle's Afro Art! label but i'd recommend tracking down:
black science orchestra - headspace lullaby dance freak - in dub unitedeye - ska east of the west black science orchestra - keep on keepin on (road to washington mix) the man - question? (phillysoulphical mix) paul murphy & marc woolford - jazz room (spiritual south mix) tokyo ska paradise orchestra - skarada dub (paul murphy mix) the mindset - get set paul murphy - soul call
a lot of operates at a 4-hero-esque level of fantasizing / lionizing / canonizing black american history (lots of nods to philadelphia, detroit and the delta) and the london rare groove scene ("jazz room") but if you can hang with what people used to disparagingly call "soulboy-ism" then give it a shot

also big ballistic bros fan. would like to mention a couple oddities, like the jamayka boys dub house 12"... and the image was of the new evangelists' 12" you just mentioned.
― blunt, Saturday, 26 January 2008 01:22 (eighteen years ago)
beedle's remix of "sweetsmoke" by mr. scruff also v much worth finding
― blunt, Saturday, 26 January 2008 01:24 (eighteen years ago)
uhh new disco evangelists
― blunt, Saturday, 26 January 2008 01:28 (eighteen years ago)
"a new dawn" is the same as "de niro"?
― moonship journey to baja, Saturday, 26 January 2008 01:53 (eighteen years ago)
never heard "a new dawn" EP
his remixes of "consciousness" by dj food
"ghetto conscious" = basically a re-edit of the beat from "choice is yours" by black sheep
"cosmic conscious" = a junglist bongo beat that cribs from jacob's optical stairway + lonnie liston smith circa "thembi" keyboards + a physicist talking about an expanding universe = one of my top 10 all time tracks
― moonship journey to baja, Saturday, 26 January 2008 01:57 (eighteen years ago)
human arts - "big sur highway"
charmingly dated late 90s glasgow underground-esque house with an electric jazz guitar solo. faze action loved it.
― moonship journey to baja, Saturday, 26 January 2008 01:58 (eighteen years ago)
rather dope dj mix - not sure if it's by ashley, rocky or diesel but it's nice
strikingly prescient mix in which he revived "stop bajon" and "adventures in success"
― moonship journey to baja, Saturday, 26 January 2008 02:01 (eighteen years ago)
never heard, would like to hear hear stuff from black sunshine productions. looks like he might have been involved in running the label?
― moonship journey to baja, Saturday, 26 January 2008 02:03 (eighteen years ago)
more excellent remixes / reedits
curtis mayfield "doo doo wap is strong in here" rolling stones "rain fall down" laurent garnier "man with the red face" cassio ware "baby love" david holmes "gritty shaker" (as ballistic brothers) indian vibes "mathar" (as ballistic brothers)

high praise, no LOL
― moonship journey to baja, Saturday, 26 January 2008 02:23 (eighteen years ago)
what about "where were you?"? that's ace. that "garden of earthly delights" mix mentioned above is gorgeous. the "strings of life" remix is ok but if irc derrick may wasn't happy.

Rude System is a great album. Beautiful gatefold vinyl packaging and delicate vinyl replicating cd packaging. London Hooligan Soul remains my go-to album for summer bbq's in the backyard.
― brotherlovesdub, Saturday, 26 January 2008 18:26 (eighteen years ago)
whoa, was off the internet all day. thanks, i ill try to find some ballistic bros. stuff.

i'm not much of an ashley beedle fan to be honest, i have a couple records but that's it. lots of edits of rare records that just arent that interesting, and lots of uninteresting edits in general. "New Jersey Deep" is the banger, of course.
― pipecock, Sunday, 27 January 2008 18:37 (eighteen years ago)
i saw beedle guest at kenny hawkes' long defunct 'space' night at bar rumba in london years ago. and he was awful. as far as i can rememeber, all he played was uninspiring disco house (and blandly mixed to boot). maybe it was just an off night. space was a great club night however.
mostly love beedle's production work though. this being a particular favourite: http://www.discogs.com/release/25570
love the bassline.
