So, it's 1971's turn. A directionless time for music, but still some nice songs.

The best song here is "I'll Be There", but it probably receives lots of votes, so I am being contrary and voting for "Another Day" instead :)

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 27 January 2008 01:55 (eighteen years ago)

Oh there is some dross in this. Still, it does contain John Kongos doing the original of Step On You and Family's fanfuckingtastic In My Own Time (Roger Chapman - the most underrated vocalist in rock. Discuss).

But there is one clear winner for me and it's not The Jackson Five, great though I'll Be There is. It has to be R Dean Taylor's Indiana Wants Me - a stone cold classic.

Guilty_Boksen, Sunday, 27 January 2008 21:23 (eighteen years ago)

Oh and Another Day is one of McCartney's best IMO so not a bad choice, Geir.

Guilty_Boksen, Sunday, 27 January 2008 21:24 (eighteen years ago)

Just noticed that Jeepster is in there as well, which was T Rex's finest 3 minutes (still not as good as R Dean though).

Guilty_Boksen, Sunday, 27 January 2008 21:29 (eighteen years ago)

XP I really like "Another Day", but it got a rather lukewarm reception at the time. It is sort of twee, you know. John Lennon's "Who Do You Sleep" was directed towards that song.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 28 January 2008 00:02 (eighteen years ago)

no Who, no credibility. that said, "I'll Be There" in a walk.

Lawrence the Looter, Monday, 28 January 2008 04:27 (eighteen years ago)

and "a directionless time for music"? let's see, what came out in 1971...who's next, there's a riot goin' on, led zeppelin iv, joni mitchell's blue, funkadelic's maggot brain, what's going on, muswell hillbillies, the MC5's high time...i count at least six absurdly untouchable masterworks there, and i'm sure i left some out.

Lawrence the Looter, Monday, 28 January 2008 04:32 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, and they all have so much in common with each other. More an indication of stuff happening on the edges, no?

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Monday, 28 January 2008 05:46 (eighteen years ago)

Glad to be reminded that "What Are You Doing Sunday" was an influence on/presence in "Disco 2000."

Pretty good list, by the way.

A very strong list, actually, and it was hard to choose just one, but in the end I went for "Double Barrel."

"I...

"Brown Sugar" ya buncha wimps!

Ioannis, Monday, 28 January 2008 11:29 (eighteen years ago)

I am happy with my choice but how did I miss Double Barrel? I'm gonna be singing it to myself all day now.

Guilty_Boksen, Monday, 28 January 2008 12:26 (eighteen years ago)

"Double Barrel" is not at all magnificent.

Reggae needed Chris Blackwell.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 28 January 2008 12:29 (eighteen years ago)

Now, THAT is really, really stupid, Geir. Even by your standards.

Dr.C, Monday, 28 January 2008 12:48 (eighteen years ago)

Oh shit, I skip-read the list and missed Double Barrel!

I went for I'm Still Waiting - just ahead of Coz I Luv You and Hot Love.

Dr.C, Monday, 28 January 2008 12:53 (eighteen years ago)

T Rex owned that year, mum was a big fan.
