Can we not have a thread solely dedicated to Van Halen's "Jump"?

I've just heard Van Halen's "Jump" for the first time in a gazillion years and it just absolutely FLOORED me. Here was this guitar rock band pulling a trump card and drenching us in this nouveau (for the time) keyboard sound instead. It sounded so fresh at the time. I bet the rest of the album sucks, but by god. They just outdid Rush, Journey & The Who on this one song.

And listen to the production of the drums!

Absolutely marvellous synth theme.

The rest of the album isn't too bad either btw although not up there with the debut. But there is only one more song with synths.

There was a period about 3 years ago when it was so ubiquitous that felt like I could barely leave the house without hearing it. The first time I heard it after all those years, I was quite entertained, and goofed around with everyone else, but I quickly grew to hate it all over again.

I like how the 'Can't you see me standing here? / I got my back against the record machine" part acts as a counterpart to the rest of the song. It's like we're brought back down to Earth for a moment before we leap back into the air.

At college someone I knew went into the cafeteria and put "Jump" on the jukebox five times in a row. Everybody wanted to kill him.

The rest of the album does not suck.

The instrumental title track has synths and "I'll Wait" features synths. Seek it out.

The title track is just an intro to "Jump", really.

I love VH to death, but this song is a parping travesty.

hot for teacher pips it, I'd say...but only just.

the band fought Eddie on doing the song for a while, too....it was the right time to do it, though....they got away with it at that point.

Too bad they'd do so many fucking bad synth anthems in the Hagar era.

(note I think Jump is a cool song...but shit like "Dreams"...shudder)

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Sunday, 27 January 2008 20:20 (eighteen years ago)

I bet the rest of the album sucks

WTF??

I never understand when hardcore van halen fans think this song was a sell out move. they were a pop band from day one. their singer was 1 step away from belting out show tunes and the first album had a doo wop break down. stuff like this is why they were great.

filthy dylan, Sunday, 27 January 2008 21:56 (eighteen years ago)

that breakdown was pretty cool. I'm not a huge VH fan by any means but that's one of the coolest parts of the album (and I do love I and IV...)

I think many hardcore fans have come to embrace it in the end. After all, compared to the shit like "Why Can't This Be Love?" which sounds more like a Coca-cola jingle, it was a masterpiece.

four weeks pass...

oH my god I just want to die over this shit:

Was Eddie VH a raving Genesis fan when he wrote this or what? Instrumental bits remind me a lot of tracks off 'Duke' and such. Also, I love love love the Miami Vice drum fills on 'I'll Wait'.
