liamail, Sunday, 27 January 2008 14:12 (eighteen years ago)

Spiders - although Woody is from Driffield, but that's near enough to Hull.

snoball, Sunday, 27 January 2008 14:25 (eighteen years ago)

I don't even know any of these!

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Sunday, 27 January 2008 14:50 (eighteen years ago)

Not even the Spiders from Mars? You'd dig Milkfloat, Jon.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 27 January 2008 14:51 (eighteen years ago)

Spiders

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 27 January 2008 15:00 (eighteen years ago)

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 27 January 2008 15:01 (eighteen years ago)

The Beautiful South

DavidM, Sunday, 27 January 2008 15:04 (eighteen years ago)

Re. Fila Brazilia: "Risky Wank" is the best song title ever.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 27 January 2008 15:04 (eighteen years ago)

Herman gets it in one

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 27 January 2008 15:05 (eighteen years ago)

Drinking gave it away :)

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 27 January 2008 15:06 (eighteen years ago)

:(

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 27 January 2008 15:07 (eighteen years ago)

When did they exist?

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 27 January 2008 15:15 (eighteen years ago)

early 90s

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 27 January 2008 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

We just made music for ourselves, and nobody else like it so that was a bonus.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 27 January 2008 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

ouch the memories

fandango, Sunday, 27 January 2008 16:12 (eighteen years ago)

if off-topic

fandango, Sunday, 27 January 2008 16:19 (eighteen years ago)

Wish i could forget ever hearing Kingmaker

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 27 January 2008 16:20 (eighteen years ago)

Summerbee! no bias there obviously...

I'll second Dan's call on Fonda 500. Really transcendent live shows, much better than the records. (Dat OT did you go to Leeds yesterday? any good?)

Of those on the list, Gargoyles were good, Spiders don't count and I probably listen to Salako the most. Going for them.

Thomas, Sunday, 27 January 2008 16:29 (eighteen years ago)

I was thinking more of Spiders the place

I didn't know The Gargoyles(?) were a Hull band! and er, no I didn't go :(

fandango, Sunday, 27 January 2008 16:35 (eighteen years ago)

surely the "From Mars" might have been a giveaway :-) although it often seems like that on a Friday Night...

saying that not been to Spids for years. do you still need to be a) a member, or b) a 13-year-old goth?

Thomas, Sunday, 27 January 2008 16:44 (eighteen years ago)

The Housemartins. Even though they claimed there were three bands that were better.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 27 January 2008 18:26 (eighteen years ago)

No Fonda 500 or Edible 5ft Smiths?

:(

Jill, Sunday, 27 January 2008 22:28 (eighteen years ago)

Coum Transmissions!!!!!

Tom D., Monday, 28 January 2008 11:13 (eighteen years ago)

It'd be cool if the HM's came fourth in this poll, true.

Mark G, Monday, 28 January 2008 11:17 (eighteen years ago)

So, Noodle, you're taking a strict line on EBTG then? Bloody students!

Where are Dead Fingers Talk?

Dr.C, Monday, 28 January 2008 12:50 (eighteen years ago)

Oh I threw this together off the top of my hungover head hence no EbtG but sadder still I should've got a sneaky Genesis P. on here. Also there was some dude in the 70s who went to America and wrote a couple of very famous pop/disco bangers whose name escapes me?

Noodle Vague, Monday, 28 January 2008 21:17 (eighteen years ago)

Geir Hongro

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 28 January 2008 21:22 (eighteen years ago)

If I'd known about these dudes

http://beehive.thisishull.co.uk/default.asp?WCI=DisplayImage&ImgID=21067

they'd've been in. Nice of them to stand in front of my workplace.

Noodle Vague, Monday, 28 January 2008 21:27 (eighteen years ago)

That reminds me to mention When You Find The Girl Of Your Dreams In The Arms Of Some Scotsmen From Hull, by Barry Wom.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Monday, 28 January 2008 21:34 (eighteen years ago)

Geir Hongro

Wrong thread. ;)

Geir Hongro, Monday, 28 January 2008 21:39 (eighteen years ago)

Eh??????
buttons for the following missing :

Fila Brazillia
The Luddites
Pink Noise
The Holy Orders
Surf Butchers
Fonda 500
Baby Mammoth
The Fucking Sorry Loves - a Hull erm, 'supergroup' who are anything but really

I'll doff my flat cap to yer Milkfloat, Gargoyles and The Red Guitars, but voted for Hub as they quite clearly influenced the Red Hot Chili Peppers and all that horrid ilk.

Aren't the Paddingtons great?

Fer Ark, Monday, 28 January 2008 22:59 (eighteen years ago)

Oh and where's Wreckless Eric?

Ok not from Hull but wrote his 'hit' on that famous bench on Cott Road

Fer Ark, Monday, 28 January 2008 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

Who were the three mid-80s Hull bands who were supposed to be better than The Houstmartins?

Geir Hongro, Monday, 28 January 2008 23:35 (eighteen years ago)

And was Roland Gift in one of them?

mike t-diva, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 00:18 (eighteen years ago)

Michael Chapman
Philip Goodhand-Tait
Mick Ronson
(and his band Ronno and the pre-Spiders FM band Rats who had an album called The Rise And Fall Of Bernie Gripplestone And The Rats From Hull)

Also Robert Palmer was in a band in Hull called Mandrake before he joined The Alan Bown Set (who are brilliant and get a lot of spins at my place, btw).

Saxby D. Elder, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 01:34 (eighteen years ago)

Aren't the Paddingtons great?

Okay can safely discount anything else this bloke has to say.

Oh god this thread is gonna be schmindie-bait forever, isn' it?

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 07:41 (eighteen years ago)

Also there was some dude in the 70s who went to America and wrote a couple of very famous pop/disco bangers whose name escapes me?

Are you thinking of Rod Temperton of Heatwave and Michael Jackson fame? He was from Cleethorpes - the other side of the Humber.

Dr.C, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 08:55 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, did he play on Off the Wall? I'm sure that must be him.

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 10:24 (eighteen years ago)

Is the strange looking man above a bus driver? I like his flat cap. It looks like he's been cleaning toilets and has his work severely cut out in that department
Sadly though, I bet he can't pull a decent pint

Fer Ark, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 13:14 (eighteen years ago)

That's Matt Monro, Jr., Son of the Singing Bus Driver.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 18:56 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Thursday, 31 January 2008 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

The New Adelphi: the best, or at least most idiosyncratic, little venue in the country. I'd be surprised if there was a band on this thread that didn't play there regularly? ( yeah yeah excepting scarlet .. whatever)

man in flat cap and bus is Paul Jackson, adelphi owner and semi-mythological Hull legend. but you knew that anyway.

Thomas, Thursday, 31 January 2008 15:43 (eighteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure I saw Scarlet at the Adelphi.

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 31 January 2008 16:51 (eighteen years ago)

pig destroyer

latebloomer, Thursday, 31 January 2008 16:53 (eighteen years ago)

If The Housemartins and The Beautiful South count, why doesn't Fatboy Slim?

HI DERE, Thursday, 31 January 2008 17:01 (eighteen years ago)

I'M TIRED OF BEING CASTIGATED FOR FUCKING THIS UP

(Actually both of them had Hull born/resident members which Fatboy strictly ain't/wasn't)

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 31 January 2008 17:03 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Friday, 1 February 2008 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

Why were The Spiders From Mars in this poll? Is Mars in Hull?

Geir Hongro, Friday, 1 February 2008 08:58 (eighteen years ago)

Yes. Mars is the alternative name for Cleveland Street ;)

Thomas, Friday, 1 February 2008 09:17 (eighteen years ago)

Who voted the Paddingtons? come on, own up.

Thomas, Friday, 1 February 2008 09:17 (eighteen years ago)

Never forget Jacko leaving the Adelphi one night (with Yozzer) in his three wheeler. He was on a quest to save 200 stranded indies who were waiting patiently, tugging at their long sleeved cardies, for the lost on route Sultans of Ping. Jacko went on a mission to escort them into base.

'Where's me Bumper (heading)' Sorry.

I would have voted for that guy - Jacko.

It's not just all the famous Hull bands that have played in his, erm, lounge is it?

Fer Ark, Friday, 1 February 2008 09:31 (eighteen years ago)

no there's been a pretty stellar line-up over the years. not bad for such an innocuous end terrace in the Forgotten City (TM).

Favourite Adelphi gig: Pavement ('99 I think?)

Worst gig ( by a touring band ) probably Camera Obscura - who I like on record, but Traceyanne pissed and moaned about the venue all the way through the show. It was just rude and embarrassing.

Thomas, Friday, 1 February 2008 10:16 (eighteen years ago)

My fave non-Hull gig was probly either Melt-Banana, Lightning Bolt or Kitchens of Distinction.

Noodle Vague, Friday, 1 February 2008 10:23 (eighteen years ago)

i missed Melt-Banana and Lightning Bolt, but everyone who was there said both were unbelievably good ( & loud)

Thomas, Friday, 1 February 2008 10:34 (eighteen years ago)

The Beautiful South beat the Housemartins? That makes no sense to me at all.

Alex in NYC, Friday, 1 February 2008 13:25 (eighteen years ago)

Noodle Vague, Friday, 1 February 2008 13:42 (eighteen years ago)

ah yes. context is a fine thing...

Thomas, Friday, 1 February 2008 13:52 (eighteen years ago)

gratuitous bump. gotta stay ahead of bristol!

Thomas, Friday, 1 February 2008 15:14 (eighteen years ago)

Noodle/Thomas

Lightning Bolt best recent band to me apart from the one I mention at the end. Oooh the suspense!!! - but they don't allow me out much these days - it was probably three or four years ago? Missed Melt Banana too

Soul Asylum
God Machine
Naked Raygun
Grifters

Two notable hoots were The manics and radiohead. Missed Oasis.Oh Dear

If you missed the Wrens, you missed the best band ever at the Adelphi. Don't tell me- you saw them and were stood tutting at the bar?

Fer Ark, Friday, 1 February 2008 23:18 (eighteen years ago)

The New Jersey band? Didn't know they played there. Probably wouldn't have gone out of my way to see them, I like the stuff I've heard okay but not really my thing. I don't get out that often these days either. Well, not as far down the road as De Grey Street.

Noodle Vague, Friday, 1 February 2008 23:25 (eighteen years ago)

As a live band they were something else. Old Cunts well past giving a shit about what's hot.Kindred spirits.Listen to Meadowlands in sequence and it's pretty great.

Fer Ark, Friday, 1 February 2008 23:31 (eighteen years ago)

Lightning Bolt were pretty good aye, but Melt-Banana were ...*stunned* x better still. Loved Diane Cluck last year, Kevin Blechdom was hilariously great in front of like 15 people (not for everyone 'spose). Pavement were good, better than first time I saw them in Manchester. Nothing else really comes to mind right now but there must be others (memory isn't too hot generally...)

Never saw Radiohead, mam wouldn't let me sister come with me & decided not to bother. Cheers ma!
