NME Originals - Punk

Got the issue last Sat and enjoyed it immensely. First time I'd read a lot of the articles from the time. Highlights being the Mick Farren call to arms 'Titanic' article from 75 and the Lester Bangs Pistols piece where he just can't make his mind up. Ten times better than nuts n'bolts dry tomes like England's Dreaming or 40 page Mojo retrospectives. Anybody else read any of it?

The best bits were the anti-Clash letters.

These punk look-backs come around every 5 years, and seem to get progressively less OTM each time. It's probably a cop out to say only mark s can save us now, but it's a thought.

Mark S has read it cover to cover.

I am even less cool than the NME though because I once went to the Bodleian Library and ordered every copy of the NME and Melody Maker between Jan 1975 and Dec 1978.

I have not bought these Punk specials - but flicked through them in the newsagents. (both Q and NME have punk special editions spin offs at the mo)

By the way Jeff, the NME one is not history rewritten/ re-documented they are all original articles/ Interviews/ reviews.

it's only a cop-out if you believe it jeff

everyone moans abt savage's book but no one's *remotely* done the work to improve on it (except me heh): the nme coasting on their rep of NEARLY 30 YEARS AGO can fuck off obv (it was bad enuff working there in 1986 LET ME TELL YOU *waves zimmer frame in feebly threatening way* *attempts to gob but ends up dribbling* etc etc)

they think the clash are punk = oh what's the point

mark s, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

they are history rewritten martian because they are saying THESE GUYS WERE RIGHT THEN = WE MUST BE RIGHT NOW

well those guys were not even necessarily right then (haha farren was DRIVEN OUT OF THE COUNTRY by the wrath of "hip young gunslingers" burchill-parsons => sinking the titanic meant getting rid of HIM)

the bit i like best in the bangs piece is where the girl pogoing turns out to be a teacher

mark s, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i am even less cool than tom because i used to get the staff in the UL to fetch old copies of the wire for me...

ignorant q: so is this nme thing worth reading if you have not read v much about punk at all? surely it is at least an interesting historical document, no?

toby, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yes probably provided you don't buy ther nme line, that they invented punk: sounds archives — much more important imo — are locked away in express newspapers lubianka

mark s, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is there a photo of me in it?

yes, I did read the question, thanks (I have also flicked thru the book and the rival Q one in Waterstones). Point is - may be original pieces but somebody NOW selected what to print.

(Ignore me, btw - my 1977 experience of punk = whatever the Daily Express said.)

Blimey DJ Martian I can tell you did boring old O-Level history and not exciting GCSE History with its qns about the dangers of Primary Source A and Secondary Source B.

Tom, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Sounds archives — much more important imo — are locked away in express newspapers"

Yes, I'd like to see a similar Sounds compilation of stuff. What were the main differences between the papers during the period in question?

David Gunnip, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

haha david luckily i am busy this aft. or i might spend a day and 30000 words actually ANSWERING that question

ancient mariner s, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, it's begging to be answered by an epic post. I've read bits and bobs before about the different lines taken by the weeklies during punk but wouldn't mind hearing from some of the oldies but goodies on ILM!!
