The best Place to start with him would be the complete Blue Note Box Set. You can also check out The Herbie Nichols project headed up by Ben allison Frank Kimbrough and other members of the Jazz Composers Collective. If you like the music of Bartok and Satie then you'll love his music as that is where much his harmonies are derived.

It's actually only 3 discs in a cardboard sleeve, and can be found pretty cheaply, I think.
