That was never 5 minutes injury time, and Del Piero really should have sunk them in the 81st minute.

Musically, yay for Phoenix, Air, and Daft Punk pre-Discovery. Nay for Vanessa Paradis, Telepopmusik, and Daft Punk nowadays.

Dunno, what's my opinion of individually wrapped orange slices? About the same level of importance. Although their latest adventure might be their last attempt to capture the world's attention by throwing all their toys out of the playpen, or else at some Moroccans. ('J'Accuse' is still apparently a shocking expose there, unlike the WTC conspiracy idiocy that's topping their bestseller charts - but then, for a nation of so-called intellectuals, it's funny that politicians can stay in power for 50 years and still overlook the easy way to get elected, i.e. build a huge Mickey Mouse pinata so the people can finally exorcise the shame of being rescued from compulsory diet of bratwurst by those diabolically muticultural Yanks). Exceptionalism sucks, exceptionalism by corrupt, parochial nonentities is just sad.

Unless you're just referring to the boox flix discs out of there recently, which are tres merveilleux

Dont know what your after but I give you a brief ovewrview of NZs relations with France!: We lost a generation of young men in WW1, and quite a few more in WW2. They blocked our access to the UK butter market in the early 70's crippling our economy. They sent govt agents over and blew up the Rainbow Warrior in Auckland in '85 killing 1 crew member. They continued nuclear testing in our part of the world for decades despite numerous world court orders to stop. And worst of all they beat The All Blacks in the 99 rugby world cup semi final. French food, wine and women take some beating though

* returns with several comedy bruises on head *

so, anyway.... my friend Emma B is from France and she expects a certain formality of small routines and daily habits - phases and ticks off the clock in one's day that are so small that i find them invisible, but to her are moments to recognize and commemorate. she won't smoke a cigarette while walking. when i suggested we get some coffee and drink it on the way to the subway she looked as if i'd spit in her food. making every moment special: classic or dud?

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A certain form of classic. You're making your relationship with her sound like When Ed Burns Met Amelie.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I much rather imagine myself an Ed NORTON to her.... Mr. Bean, but yes, it's a little like that.

(If anyone mentions Brel in this thread I am gonna stuff a Belgian waffle up their nostrils.)

There's not a country without bad points (Le Pen, most obviously and recently), but as well as some top recent music, we're also talking about the country that was the centre of the art world from the mid- 19th to mid-20th Centuries, produced loads of great writers such as Hugo, Proust, Zola and Flaubert, some of the great movies (Renoir, Godard, Truffaut, Carne, plus Jean Gabin is my favourite actor and Jacques Prevert is my favourite screenwriter), some really good comics (Asterix!) and some of the world's great architecture, from gothic cathedrals like Chartres to modern greats like the Pompidou. Few countries have given us so much.

Martin Skidmore, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

le pen nothing, this is a country where a stalinist like maurice thorez regularly received 25% of the vote despite saying that were he elected he might need to exterminate a few thousand people, the same man who also approved of the execution of imre nagy. how can someone take a country seriously when 4% of the population voted for olivier besancenot the trotskyite postman.

keith, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i'll have to go with dave q on this one. except maybe i'm more psyched for individually wrapped orange slices (where ARE THEY?!!)

i also agree with martin on france's cultural contributions, but i think my viewpoints on this subject have been permanently scarred by schooling: six years of taking german classes next door to the french classroom. we didn't get along so hot with the french-takers- let's put it that way. they hated us. we hated them. they would crack jokes between cigarettes about our lederhosen and funny hats, and it didn't help that Frau forced us to do the 'chicken dance' on cue. point and laugh, yes. point and laugh. we retorted with dumb things like "why did they plant trees in france? so the german soldiers could march in the shade!" when they claimed that we weren't as literate as they were.

more on this later: my brain is spaetzle. i have several years' worth of emotionally damaging memories to uncover (thanks mark s!)
