Best of Bergen

Norway's most successful city, at least as far as abroad success in recent years goes.

Some of these acts are originally from other places (Tromsø in particular), but they have been based in Bergen when making their most famous stuff.

To make things a bit easier, I have left out some Norwegian acts who sing in Norwegian only. So if you wanted to vote for Jan Eggum, sorry...

My vote for Pogo Pops may be the only one as I suspect most of the votes will go elsewhere :)

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 22:53 (eighteen years ago)

There are probably 20 black metal bands on the list (this is from RYM after all....) that I have never ever heard of, but considering black metal fans all over the world have heard of every single Norwegian black metal band, I still included them :)

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 22:55 (eighteen years ago)

Geir loves Enslaved so much he included them twice

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 23:00 (eighteen years ago)

1. Royksopp
2. Annie
3. Burzum

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 23:03 (eighteen years ago)

if I'm wrong then this isn't ILM

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 23:04 (eighteen years ago)

Pashmina will give Immortal a vote for sure!

RYM does, that is (And RYM probably does, as RYM is one huge bunch of black metal loving satanists - or at least it seems so at times)

THIS IS A FOLK SONG FROM BERGEN. BERGEN BELSEN. IT IS CALLED TOMORROW I SHALL BE DEAD BECAUSE I WENT OUT WITH A NEW WAVE GIRL EVEN THOUGH I WAS A NORWEGIAN PUNK ROCKER. HERE WE GO WITH THE SONG

DJ Mencap, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 23:13 (eighteen years ago)

Whoever killed the most rival metal guys.

Bodrick III, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 23:40 (eighteen years ago)

Ungdomskulen just nudge ahead over Erlend Øye, Kings Of Conv, Royskopp, Annie, Ralph Myerz. Can't get on with Sondre Lerche at all.

Voted for Truls Mørk which I suppose is a very un-Geir thing of me to do.
The one thing that strikes me about this list is that I've for some reason managed to not hear Geirr Tveitt's music (at least not as far as I know)
If I could've voted for a pop act as well, it would've been Enslaved, particularly for the three-album streak that started with "Mardraum", after they'd obviously turned into big prog nerds.

It should probably be noted that Covenant = The Kovenant, the crap symph/industrial metal group.

Bjorn Torske. A large number of his records have wormed their way into my head over the years.

Bee En Juan, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 02:13 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah Bjorn is my actual answer cos his album last year was ridiculously good and slept on

DJ Mencap, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 10:04 (eighteen years ago)

I have discovered just a few crucial ommisions here, both Röyksopp related.

Those Norwegians and Alania are both listed as Tromsø acts, but from my knowledge, Brundtland and Lindbæk were Bergen based already by then. So when Röyksopp are included, they should have been too.

Planning to do a Tromsø poll anyway, which will of course include both along with Röyksopp.

IMMORTAL FTW

"Sons of Northern Darkness" is so awesome.

Pashmina, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 12:19 (eighteen years ago)

Well, to each his own. :)

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 12:20 (eighteen years ago)

Dude, Geir, it's a great record. Admiteddly, they weren't exactly masters of melody or owt.

Pashmina, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 12:23 (eighteen years ago)

Well, some black metal acts may write good melodies too. And then they bury them..... :)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Tombot got it the wrong way round

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 10 February 2008 00:51 (eighteen years ago)

Now Tomboy there's a name I forgot.

Anyway, disappointed that there's no love for Magnet. The black metal guys obviously went for the genre's creator. :)
